Gold Coast Suns?

The Sun is the name of our star just like Sirius and Alpha Centauri are names of other stars.

We don't call teams 'the Collingwoods' or 'the Sydneys'.

Yes we do, eg "we'd like our team to a play a brand of disciplined team footy like the Sydneys or the St Kildas of the competition."

Perfectly grammatical. Making a semantically singular word plural is generally fine. Making an uncountable noun like "milk" or "rice" is not.

Irrelevant though because "sun" is a noun that can be semantically and grammatically plural. Look it up in a dictionary.

It's capitalised because it is the name of a team, not because it refers to a plural of our Sun.

If it was the Gold Coast Fishes, then maybe you would have a point.

I'm happy to be corrected but I'm pretty sure that the name of our Star/Sun is "Sol".

Like I said happy to be corrected. As for the GCFC name. I can see why they would pick Suns. I would have prefered something like Farmers or Miners though. So then the could be "Gold Farmers, Gold Miners."

Suns isn't a word. And it's not a nickname with historical reflection or cultural slang like the Blues.

Is there some historical reflection that links 'Blues' with the suburb of Carlton that precedes the football club?

Noun

Singular
sun
Plural
suns

sun (plural suns)
  1. (astronomy) A star,[1] especially when seen as the centre of any single solar system.
  2. The light and warmth which is received from the sun.[1]
  3. Something like the sun in brightness or splendor.[2]
  4. Sunrise or sunset.[2]
Now, compare a countable noun like "sun"

Eg "A binary solar system is a solar system which has two suns." (correct)
cf
"A binary solar system is a solar system which has two sun*." (incorrect)

with a non-countable noun like "sheep"

Eg "It is estimated that in New Zealand there are over 50 million sheeps*." (incorrect)
cf
"It is estimated that in New Zealand there are over 50 million sheep." (correct)

The Suns is fine.

They'll never please everyone, especially most keyboard heroes on this site. But then again, no ones opinion on this site actually matter in real life. No one here will do anything about it, but whine in a forum. So......

Good luck to em. :thumbsu:

Wow, I can't believe so many of you like it. I think it''s embarrasingly bad - like something a grade 6 kid would think of, subconsciously trying to be American.

Wow, I can't believe that you can't believe that your opinion may not be shared by everyone

Gold Coast Heelers would have a 'Bluey' connotation linking it to Carlton. Shame though, I like it/

Also love the Gold Coast Snapper Heads cause I love Snapper, and Snapper Rocks is also an iconic surf break.

Perhaps if Snapper were a more fierce fish it may have been an option. 'Carn the Snappers'. I like it.

Dont mind the Suns but it does sound rather safe. Sharks were always my favorite despite the Southport connection. Even StingRays I grew to like, GC Rays. Couldve worked a treat.

We have the GC Blaze up here for BsktBall, and theyre all a bunch of w***ers. How about the Gold Coast Natalie Imbruglias?
