They have completely different roles.

That game was very much a microcosm of our season. We are absolutely good enough to match it with the best sides, but just lack that tiny bit of polish when it really counts. Plenty of fight, plenty of grit, but just not quite good enough in 2023.

Simply not good enough from Sloane, and Murphy was utterly anonymous. We have to persist with Thilthorpe but right now he's just not offering enough. Borlase struggled but hey, it's his second match. Most of the rest were good, I thought. Thank goodness Hinge was okay.

The less said about the umpiring the better.

We'll have some quality draft picks this year, and get another preseason into our young players, and there should be no excuse for us not to be a genuine contender in 2024.
They have different roles but seems like some of the seniors get a bit of a free ride

From what I saw last night I didn’t really see Fog outside the F50 at any point, he always seemed to be playing deep and again trying to wrestle with his opponent rather than running and leading at the ball. He’s always soo much more dangerous when he’s moving, as a stationary target he doesn’t have the strength or nuance to beat his opponent consistently.
His first mark was on the wing, in the first 2 minutes of the game

Fog is at his best when he is mobile and not wrestling.

I bet defenders know how to nullify Fog. Suck him him into the wrestle. Engage him first and stop him leading. That would be the notes on Fog.

I bet Fog enjoys wrestling, feat of strength. But it is no good for his forward play.

He has been great the last two games being mobile and getting some ball up the ground.

This gets him into the game and stops the wrestling.

This isn’t the disappointing performance - it’s the best performance anyone has put up all year against the Lions at the Gabba. The disappointment, as it feels like it’s always been, is the dross we’ve served up against our mid-table competitors (GWS X2, ESS, WB, GC away) that leaves us needing to try to pull of these miracle wins against the best teams in the comp with vastly more experience.

We’ve played some outstanding football against the top 4, and guess what? Sometimes that isn’t even enough, because they’re great teams who can beat you even at your best. The inability to match these efforts in the games that really matter, the 8-point games, is the real black mark against what would otherwise be a successful season.

Yep. In a nutshell. Great post

Except our midfield is still not good enough, and it's old, and it's not going to improve.

We've prolonged the pain, because when we finally admit that some of these guys have to be moved on we'll have to replace them with midfield inexperience, having done nothing to develop a younger midfield this year.

Between Dads Army in the guts and Tex's form, there are enough reasons to question the idea of linear improvement.
Do you think Rachele, Pedlar, Schoenberg and Soligo are career forward pocket/wing players? I don't know how well that group will develop but it could not be clearer that the club thinks those guys are the future of the midfield. They aren't in the side because they think they are the best possible options in the positions in which they are spending most of their time.

Wouldn't mind next year trying Nank in the centre bounce rotation and build his tank up over off season.

He looked very clean and composed when allowed to have a brief CBA or two.
He didn’t have a cba. At the start of the second quarter it was a ball up after the centre bounce, he had moved up from the back

Walker second half. Should have had 4 goals really. Reckon he'd be pretty pissed with his game.
Didn't flush a snap shot all day. They're usually elementary for him but hit the belly every time. An almost day for him, and a few others.

Bad:

I think we're just a finals quality side in a year with a weak top 4. We had our chances. Bad year to sit it out.
If there was ever a year of "make the 8 and anything could happen", it's this year. Collingwood and Port are dropping players like flies. Brisbane fold in finals.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple straight sets exits. Carlton is going to get a hell of an armchair ride too.

I have full faith in all of our guys under 26, except Murphy.

When every game this year is on the line, none of Sloane, Laird or Smith stood up with their experience and "Leadership ". These three don't have a killer instinct. Never have. All three are hard workers. Never been game breakers.

Compare that to Pendlebury Friday night.

Like all our close losses our younger guys stood up when needed. We lacked experience and leadership in the clutch moments.

Going forward, with these three retiring and our next batch taking charge we will be a good team.

You can see Schoenberg, Pedlar, Rankine, Fog, Rachele Michalanney are all game breakers or clutch players. Thilthorpe has shown this as well.

Just need the old plodders to retire and be phased out.

I don’t think so, Collingwood are dominant and are gonna be damn hard to beat. They just flicked a switch against Geelong during the 2nd quarter and never looked back, even without their best player.

You do realise that the commentators have been talking up our ball movement for weeks or do you watch with sound down ?

We lead comp in possession chains from d50 to I50 scores

Re last night Fog just had one of those nights where he got his hands on the ball but dropped marks , multiple times starting in first quarter when he and Soligo dropped uncontested marks I50

No our delivery isn’t poor overall it’s one of the best in comp proven by stats and spoken about by commentators

At one stage in 1st quarter we were going at 90% and just moving ball beautifully without it touching the deck
Our ball movement from D50 to I50 is the only reason we have competed against the best teams this year, anyone watching us would know it’s a clear strength.

They had a stat pre game that he’s the most accurate shot on goal in the league this year, put the bloody commentators curse on him! Haha

Good: Harry Schoenberg better not be dropped again - showing signs of becoming a really good two-way midfielder. His defensive work since coming back in has been impressive and I’ve noticed he’s quite clever with his running patterns as well, starting to put himself in the right positions for repeat possessions within a chain.

Certainly not getting dropped again this year, his late season form has been one of the biggest positives to come from our season overall. Have noticed he is far cleaner with ground ball pickups too.

Do you think Rachele, Pedlar, Schoenberg and Soligo are career forward pocket/wing players? They aren't in the side because they think they are the best possible options in the positions in which they are spending most of their time.

Let's say we re-sign Crouch who is currently 28, and we also have Laird contracted for another 3 seasons. Both would realistically play full time midfield until they retire in 3 to 4 years or more.

Do you think it's acceptable for Schoenberg to be waiting until his 8th season to get a proper full time run in there? Which would equate to 7 seasons for Pedlar and 6 for Rachele/Soligo?

Are we expecting to play these guys on the wing and in pockets until their mid 20s where suddenly they'll be able to become elite midfielders despite not being developed in that position?

What makes this top 4 any weaker than other seasons? What makes a strong top 4?
I think it's just that all four are vulnerable and nobody has been dominant. There's a lot of ways you could look at this but for instance last year Geelong's percentage was 144.2%, and their last loss was in round 9. They were just miles ahead of everyone and the obvious team to beat. Their main competition was Melbourne as the reigning premiers with a percentage of 130.5%, but they'd been much shakier with a few losses and some narrow wins in the last couple of months.

This year it's all Melbournes - highest percentage is Collingwood with 126.7% and they just got belted by a bottom four side last week, plus they've had a string of injuries recently and it's yet to be seen how that will impact their finals run. The rest of the top four are Brisbane who have had a loss to Gold Cost and two narrow wins the last three weeks, Melbourne who just lost last night, and Port Adelaide who have lost four in a row. Carlton are probably the form side of the competition in 5th but they probably won't get the double chance, and the rest of the eight is totally open still. It's a very open season.
