Did the Russell Ebert stuff have any impact on the result you reckon? We all know he was a legend of the footy club, and a lot of the guys in the team would have gotten to know him extremely well over the years. I remember Duursma saying he was with him nearly every week in his first year doing community stuff. I know it's been a while now since he passed, but maybe the weekend just brought up a bit emotionally for some of the guys and they just weren't able to perform at their best. We've seen with Dustin Martin (and I'm aware it's a bit different losing a parent) now taking time out of the game how it can get to you mentally even after some time has passed, and I'm wondering if the tribute to Russell maybe had the opposite intended effect on the players. Todd Marshall had a poor game, no denying that. But maybe he was also battling some stuff in his own head and this weekend might have brought up some of his own trauma, we know what he's been through.

Now none of this excuses that performance on the weekend, it was obviously piss poor. I just reckon now after the dust has sort of settled (I was fuming Saturday night), I can sort of see how this could possibly have had something to do with the mental state of the players.

This is something I hope the coaches at least tried to address though. They needed to get the boys up and try and channel that energy in to a positive mindset pre-game.

All I know is if I lost a friend and had just come from a memorial service, I don't reckon I'd perform at my best either.

Sack Hinkley.

My read on this is that we will take some heavily losses over the next month and then start winning again. We will concede 90+ points most games for next month until one of Clurey/Alir avaliable and McKenzie able to move again. As for offense, I don't see us kicking any more than 70+ points without Dixon bringing it to ground in a pack.

The only thing that gives me hope is how weird the stats were on the night. Super odd/rare to win almost all key indicators (disposals, I50s, contested positions etc.) and not just loose but get belted like that.

Quick thoughts... Eye test on Skinner is he was not up to level, a bit slow and a bit fumbly for someone we need to step in to a key role straight away (rather than develop over years). Marshall avoids contact and will never be able to shake the number 1 opposition defender - useful for 1/2 goals max but needs a bigger key forward around him. Finlayson similar boat but a little more strength. Marshall also looked lost in defence when there in last quarter, thought there could be some Westhoff like reading of the play but I can't see it after that. On a positive note, despite being a little untidy, L Jones looked good in the midfield in the last quarter.

This is possible. I once played a game of soccer the weekend after one of our players' mum had died. We lost badly to a team that we had never lost to before or since.

Mods can answer it, but there’s a Port Radio thread. It’s pinned. It should be fine posting there.

Thanks. I’ll look for it.

You can draw a direct line between the unwarranted and undeserved windmilling after last week's defeat - 'if we play like that then we'll win more than we lose' and 'it wasn't like a normal loss' - and the manner of this defeat.

This team has achieved absolutely nothing and are not entitled to the level of arrogance they display.

Spent two years building respect and have lost literally all of it with two absolutely insipid performances in our last three games.
I think this sums up a lot of the problem. That loss against Brisbane was actually significantly worse than an 11 point loss looked. We looked at our injuries and said... well we were close under adversity. And every pumped us up because Brisbane is a side pushing for a premiership, so we should be good.

What that massively ignored is that Brisbane kicked 11.14 and even gave up a few good goal scoring opportunities for no score. We also kicked 10.9, which felt like an above average accuracy thing for us.

So if Brisbane kick a bit straighter, we kick a little bit worse and that game becomes a 5 goal loss.

Conversely, I thought we kicked exceptionally badly against Hawthorn, while they kicked exceptionally well. Gunston's two goals were just ridiculous efforts that will miss more often than not. So that game was realistically more a 6-7 goal difference.

All the same problems with the forward line were present in both games.

Thats not excusing the performance in any way, I just feel the loss to Hawthorn wasn't the massive fall off from the round 1 performance that it appears to be on the surface. Looking back, round 1 was a lot worse than it appeared. If we play like we did against Brisbane every week, we will lose more than we win because most opponents won't give up as many goal scoring opportunities as Brisbane did.

If we win this week, it is still mathematically possible to make the 8
I’m sick of hearing about ‘making the 8’ like it’s an achievement. I literally couldn’t care if we make finals, because it’s so abundantly clear we aren’t winning the big dance, so what’s the point?

Jump on board the death-ride train because it’s the only way Koch gets rid of Hinkley. I think if we have another ‘middle of the road’ season’ Koch will put it down to injuries and luck like he has in the past. We need a genuine meltdown 6-7 win season to see change.

I’m done.

I agree wasn’t as good as others have made out. What I saw from watching the game is a way more threatening forward line and a way more imposing backline. I not only look at the game but projecting forward it looks like they are going to be way more a threat than we are even when we get Alir and Dixon back.
As for Gunston, those goals aren’t a fluke. He’s always been a very smart and skilled footballer.

Garibaldi Red gave me the digital version of the CD tables and I said I might watch the replay to do some of my usual analysis. Could be stuffed, just like the players decision making efforts.

At least this week was the X scores.
Port Xscore 74 actual 56 - yeah we kicked like shit in our forward line except SPP
Haw Xscore 94 actual 120 - they kick 3 or 4 out of their arse , but it seems to happen when you dominate

Lol 57% of time in our half of the ground and therefore 12 more I50s, but only 9 M50s to Hawks 12.

The pressure index says we were elite in the 1st quarter - over 200 with 204.

That's what we've turned into - triers, low altitude triers.

Given the review of R1 in the Rockliff/Fantasia podcast I was sorta looking forward to this weeks and some "inside" comments on what the players/coaches felt about R2. I dont think it was even mentioned .

Obviously they've already been told to pull their heads in. Pity. How do we get Rick, Portia and Macca back on air? ;)

Just came in here to post this, this is actually a really good article. Shows how bleak it has been so far.

"Port has scored just 33.5 points a game from turnovers the past fortnight, which ranks them last in the competition, and almost three goals a game down from the 50.8 points they generated in 2021.

Conversely, they have conceded a whopping 58.5 points a game from turnover through two rounds, which ranks them 15th, and again almost three goals worse off than in 2021 (42.3 points a game)."

"The 55 points Hawthorn scored from chains that started in their defensive 50 is the most by any team since Sydney scored 57 against Richmond in round 23, 2016.

It's also the second most that Port has conceded on record.

Last Saturday night, Hawthorn scored four goals directly from its own kick-ins. Port Adelaide conceded just six goals in that fashion across the entire 2021 season, which was the fewest of any team in the competition."

"This year, Port have recorded a shot at goal accuracy of 35.4 percent to rank last in the competition, and the worst of any side since this stat was first recorded in 2002.

The only team to finish below 40 percent for an entire year was Gold Coast in 2018 (39.4)."

I’m just glad we traded pick pick 14 and pick 19 for pick 12. And for that pick 12 to have one of the worst first games I’ve ever seen followed up by 8 touches in his SANFL game. Heads need to roll. this club is rotten.
