I gotta agree.
It makes me wonder what Nicks is thinking.
What Nicks is thinking is the same as his thinking with Tex .....managing the workload of players

Everyone says we should manage the older players ...and I agree wholeheartedly

However, you also have to remember ...we have to manage the young kids thru a 24 match season

I doubt there are any 2nd year players, who can play 24 rounds in the heat of the midfield ......Soligo & Rachelle are just into their 2nd years ....they're being protected and nurtured thru a long season .....same Pedlar

The alternative is .....you burn them out ....which negatively impacts our finals chances

I don't think Nicks is thinking anything - he would be relying on Burgess and the reams of data they gather on every player every time they play and train.

It's funny how so many on here question management of individual players while acknowledging elsewhere we have a world class high performance manager. I tend to have trust that Burgess knows what he's doing.

Yep, Burgess would be having a large say .....he knows the players physical conditioning better than Nicks

Nicks would be relying on Burgess pre-game and medicos/physios in-game. He then weighs it all up to know who to rest more or who is in most need to be subbed off. Nicks, as a coach, is ultimately responsible for player welfare/performance and not just on Burgess and the management team.

Yes Nicks ultimately makes the call but Burgess is on the bench on game day and consults with the coaches including Nicks. I think his game day influence is underestimated.

I've said in a couple of previous posts that the thing I most admire about Nicks is his patience which reminds me that I need to be patient too. 3+ years and counting!
I've disagreed with many of his selections, player positioning and lack of Game Day decision-making, but his patience during his time at the Crows is undeniable.
It's that policy-of-patience that has got our youth to where they are now (especially, say, Fogarty and Jones).
However, trying some of the young blokes as mids for a couple of stretches is hardly going to burn them out.

Having said that, Jones in particular was playing so well, leaving him where he was made sense.

On the topic of young players and burn-out, is anybody else having trouble believing how good Michalanney has been and still showing no signs of burn-out?
What a find he has been!
Not only is he really fit and highly-skilled, his composure under pressure has added calm and strength to our defence.

You have to remember that some folks here are going to make the same posts no matter what the result is.

some folks are also going to post tongue in cheek humour having had multis on Tex 5+, 6+, crows 100+ and Rankine 5+ and filled the game day thread with updates ;). And then there's the usual rainbow and lollipop brigade that climb over each other to post their petty little insults at other posters. Simply cannot help themselves.

Need to manage old and young players yet so often it’s only forced changes?

HA! Crows don't manage players yadayadayada!

Not sure if it's the case but you could be right.
The ridiculous part about whinging about coaches and the minutes young players get in the midfield is that I'm sure Burgess has his hands all over that. There would be an absolute plan about how players time would grow in there.

Performance load would be agreed on before, and the team works within those targets. Partly that's monitored by the coaches - but the players largely manage the in game rotations themselves.

Didn't think we played that well today. The team seem like they need two weeks off instead of just one. Could that have anything to do with Nicks never making a bloody unforced change? The game really told us nothing more than we rely heavily on Tex and Nicks seemed a bit too happy post match beating up on a wafl side. We have quite a long way to go but we have made some good gains this year. Nick's must start trusting the youth in the midfield and start having some belief in our squad. We won't make finals running players into the ground.

Best: Laird Walker Dawson Worrell
I've only managed to see the highlights so far, but the pressure, tackling, etc seemed pretty hot to me. It looked to me like they were right on from the start and were relentless - despite how poor the opposition was. Reckon we'll give a good account against Collingwood in a couple of weeks - can't wait for that one.

Thilthorpe's game was interesting. Thought he was good considering the opposition. Influential in the middle, also good down forward. Really interested to see where he eventually lands though, if he's building up for a career as a key forward or a ruckman, or some sort of relatively unique roaming role like he's playing now. Could see a lot of potential outcomes for him, but overall he does feel like someone who will move from serviceable to elite pretty suddenly in whatever role works best for him.

Between Thilthorpe, Pedlar, Soligo, Rankine, Rachele, Michalanney etc. we have a lot of players who are already pretty good but have a lot of potential improvement ahead of them. Exciting stuff.
