Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Are these the blokes that want to play or the blokes the GV wants to represent them??

Usually it's who the GV want - the squad usually changes over the next few weeks/months anyway. No guarantee that the players will be available when the time comes to play.

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

For starters, why would Shane Clayton not be in the squad then?

Because its a personal choice if players that are asked want to play, that maybe why mark jansz isn't in there either... There's also the fact some players may have niggling injuries and want a week off to have a bit of break... You're never going to get a commitment out of all the best players in the comp but it would be good if we could... Not a bad squad i reckon

So why have inter league if its not the real deal?
If players wont play in the interleague suspend them for a week for their club.

Kidding yourself about suspending a player because they do not want to play interleague. What does Shane have to prove by playing in this meaningless comp.

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Next time your club has a few injuries or a few blokes unavailable to play, do you think the game should be called off?
Thought the point was they dont want to play???
Theres a difference between unavailable or injured and dont want to play. Its really easy, if they cant play interleague they cant play club football. Why not??
I dont see the point of having a side of the best players in the league if the best players dont want to play.

Also how did "the prince" not make the squad?
Thought he was the greatest footballer in the universe:confused:

This gets brought up every few years and over the last couple of years the coaches have picked guys who want to play and it has worked quite well. The bottom line is you can't force guys to play. Most interleague sides are probably at 90% strength due to a couple of topliners electing not to play, but it's still works quite well, also gives younger guys exposure to a higher level of football, which they otherwise may not get. I can totally understand a Shane Clayton electing not to play, hes been there done that. Whilst we would all love to see the GV at full strength, I can understand his reasons for not wanting to play.

It doesn't change my point. If a team isn't at the strongest possible, do you think the game shouldn't go ahead?

How many of you go to these games?

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

No!
Not sure what your point is? Are you talking about interleague football?
If the best players wont play interleague football why have interleague football?

Any football. Its a (another) ridiculous notion that you should scrap a game after finding out who's available.

If you can get more of your talented players to turn up to play this game, you deserve to win.

Well quite clearly the squad isnt made up of the best players in the league. If a player doesnt want to play in this game, then that is fine. They should go with players that want to play interleague.
The interleague format is always a touchy subject. Many players want to play the game, while others dont want to risk getting injured and missing out on vital club games. Younger blokes are always enthusiastic in wanting to represent the league, while the older guys love to have a weekend off and rest their bodies. The round robin format doesnt suit players approaching 30, as their bodies take longer to recover from games.
I believe interlague should be restricted to an age group, say u/23 or u/25. This gives the younger guys are chance to shine on a higher stage and give the older blokes a well deserved rest.
In saying all that I think clubs have a little say in what players they would like to have a go at this format. I know in the Northern Football league, the clubs nominate 5 players from their club to play interleague football. Once this is done and after talking to the players, Im sure the league will select a suitable team/squad to win the title.
Suspending players for not playing interleague would be a farce.

Nice post!
I just cant get it why anyone bothers with a game and concept that the best players dont want to play in and no one wants to go and see.

Re: Official GVFL Thread (part 2)

Who doesn't want to play in their game?
Would think there will be a bit of a crowd too!

Blokes have injections every week to be able to play for their club. How many do you reckon are going to be happy to have an injection to play this one?

Watch them drop like flies between now and Sat night.

There are footballers throughout country areas in Australia who are capable of playing AFL,SANFL,WAFL but just dont aspire to play at a higher level, it is the same in interleague comps, it just doesnt interest them does that mean WHY HAVE FOOTBALL at all Its just a fact of life CD get over it and move on
