Coach sacked, players revolt Shepparton Swans is in turmoil after the sacking of senior coach Peter White, which resulted in a player revolt on Saturday.
Dan Collyer, Troy Snelson and Matt Jackson refused to play for the Swans against Benalla, after White was sacked via a phone call from the club on Friday night.

Tensions first arose within the senior playing group after training on Thursday night, when they were told player payments would be cut by 20 per cent.

Swans president Bruce O'Keefe said yesterday the cutting of player payments and White's sacking were not linked.

``It's another issue that will remain in-house,'' O'Keefe said.

``He (White) had the opportunity to raise it with the club on Thursday night. The president, secretary (Cheryl Hunter) and treasurer (Michael Moroney) were all there but he didn't raise it with any of us.''

O'Keefe said there was nothing personal between the club and White and that his sacking was a ``business decision''.

O'Keefe believed White contacted some players telling them not to play against Benalla.

White was unable to be contacted yesterday.

Snelson and Collyer have confirmed their departures from Princess Park, while Jackson's future is unknown.

White replaced Jarrod Sutherland as Swans coach at the end of 2006, leading them to a grand final in 2007 and a first semi-final last year.

He previously coached Tongala and Kyabram, leading the Bombers' to their last senior premiership in 1996.

O'Keefe said the senior players' reaction to the pay cuts was ``okay''.

``The club has a budget for things like player payments and at the moment it's a bit light on,'' O'Keefe said.

``We're a responsible club and we're not going to run with a debt. We don't owe any debt but we've been watching our budget, especially given the current economic times. We'll review things on a monthly basis and if everything goes to plan we may able to honour those payments in full and back pay them.''

Swans veterans Jarrod Sutherland and Brett Warburton are likely to step in for White as co-coaches for the rest of the season. The pair made a winning start on Saturday, thrashing Benalla by 10 goals.

Days of coach drama may return to haunt Swans Ashleigh Williamson

Peter White's sacking as Shepparton Swans coach has gone part of the way to undoing former president Robin Knaggs' work to repair the club's image.

Prior to Knaggs taking on presidency in 2001, the Swans endured a tumultuous period in which they had 14 senior coaches in 16 years.

They were dark days for the Swans. But on top of the on-field dramas, it was Knaggs who inherited a $125000 debt.

``The club was ... flat-out surviving (in 2001),'' Knaggs said this year.

It was Knaggs' business nouse that turned it all around.

Now, just eight rounds into Bruce O'Keefe's tenure as president, the club's budget is under review and a ``business decision'' was made to sack White.

But the drama of sacking coaches may sound all too familiar to Swans supporters.

It all started in 1982, when Tom Connors took over as senior coach and led the Swans to consecutive losing grand finals before being sacked mid-season in 1985.

John Williams, the 1984 Morrison medallist with Shepparton United, was sacked midway through 1993, before arguably the lowest light in the club's period came in 1994.

Brett Jukawics, an renowned football nomad, skipped town unannounced after receiving his final match payments with one game left in the season. Phil Squire (1995-96), Mark Lambourn (1997-98) and Perry Meka (1999) served terms before Tatura's 1995 premiership coach Paul Hawke took over in 2000.

Knaggs joined as president the year after and from then on the club's on and off-field woes became a thing of the past.

The Swans made finals from 2001-03 under Hawke, winning the minor premiership in 2003.

Jarrod Sutherland was playing coach from 2005-06, making an elimination final in his second year.

But it was White's arrival in 2007 when the Swans' success started to fully materialise, losing the grand final to Seymour in his first season and making the first semi-final last year.

Although currently out of the top six this year, the Swans had started to build momentum with two straight wins before White's sacking.

Knaggs is one of those most upset with the situation.

``I don't think the club thought it through,'' Knaggs said.

``The club is bigger than the individual ... I still can't understand it.''

Perhaps White's loyal statistician Mark Owens put it best when he said: ``It feels like the mission is not completed.''

One can only wonder if the mission of repairing the Swans' image will ever be completed.

A fair way to go now............ and will they be able to secure a quality coach??. Perhaps Sutherland will be a non-playing coach in 2010:confused:

What happened to Echuca on the weekend Ringo. Did they just have an off day or are Ky really that good. Fair effort by Newman to kick 10 in the wet as well.

MJ-A disappointing day and we seemed very flat on saturday. We had a reality check and hopefully now realise how much work we have in front of us. Newman threaded one through from the boundary in the first minute and he was unstoppable. Ky were very impressive and have the ability to win the flag. Hopefully we will bounce back against Euroa. I know quite a few boys were very disappointed in their efforts. Ky are vey good

It sounds as thou Mark Quarrell may be in a bit of strife, I dont think united did their homework on this fellow, he seems to have brought the same shit he stated at nathalia to the demons. Isnt their president a cop?

What has Quarrell done now?

One would assume you are not referring to the success he had at Nathalia! So instead we can assume you have some absolute quality information to impart on us!

What the hell is wrong with the Shepp News!? I Picked up today's copy and needed my magnifying glass to read the teams. What a joke. Maybe they should worry less about difficulty ratings and more about their readers' eyesight!

Perhaps they could take a leaf out of the 'Border Mail' a very comprehensive coverage of every game and teams that are correct and very easy to read. The 'Border' has a great coverage and perhaps thats the level that the Shepp news needs to be at.

Is Odgen from Ky alledgable for the Bushrangers, if so does anyone know why he aint playing with them , I assume his size ?

Only 16 and has another year, missed out on initial squad, but was asked to join them a month ago but decided against it to concentrate on schooling knowing he has next year to have a crack.

He has now been added to the list as did Brooke Martyn from Benalla. Ogden should get a game in the coming weeks.
