well he is officially a blue-bagger, which is such an odd term for a club to embrace. The first time that I heard it, it conjured up images of a little old lady carrying a bag of veggies down lygon street. When you think about it, there is a connection between that image and their list....

I think that GW is not a fan of trading draft picks for experienced players to stay at the top. He thought we should renew quickly after the 2023 flag. His last 2 pieces of work, while I think the right decisions, we were essentially r*ped of what we paid for Shultz and received for Ginivan. It makes me wonder whether it was his mini revenge.

Who knows for sure who is right, but he may be underestimating the quality of Naicous, Moore and JDG. If all three fit and firing, as good as any top three going around. Expect we all underestimated the quality that are veterans have continued to produce.

Time will tell if GW is a magician, who was fantastic with the 2023 trades and free agents, brought in Fly, so we have a lot to thank him for. I just hope that bluebaggers continue to be almost a bride …

I am guessing Kelly’s mantra is to trade to keep up the top, and that management have bought into this. No proof, but just what I have surmised from the media reports.

Isn't that exactly what he did at Hawthorn? Many Hawk fans blame him for overpaying at the trade table to stay on top, with him and Clarkson seemingly responsible for their position before Mitchell came in to re-build the list and find some young talent.

"his mini revenge"? For the personality difference he was planning on having/growing over this season? Try again.

my vision involves some old lady with pearls and an overcoat holding a blue bag....staggering down lygon street falling into the gutter...

I grew up thinking it was Blues + brown paper BAGS = bluebaggers. I was disappointed to discover I was under the wrong impression and it was a term of endearment.

This is Football dept stuff - maybe run it past the CEO who should ask the hard questions but if the CEO establishes the trade - draft strategy then I would imagine the FD might be less than enamoured

I agree with that, but I thought I read that he thought at Hawthorn they should have renewed their list more quickly and was the main point of difference with the board, possibly Kelly.

I find the manner in which he has left indicative of someone who has not happy. On top that his last two actions, which I think were the right moves overall, were his worst two ‘public’ results achieved in terms of what we paid and received.
It points to someone who was disgruntled.

Read my response to Vinnie, might help you out a bit
You are seriously suggesting Wright deliberately entered into(what you see as) sub-optimal trades because he was disgruntled?

Effectively, he was sandbagging the club?

That is possibly the dumbest thing I have ever read on BF, including the stuff I have written myself.

Congratulations. Quite an achievement.

I am just guessing. Kelly is a football person, and would have thought as CEO would bring his football knowledge and influence to bear on the overall strategic direction of all the departments, including the football department. As CEO he should be influencing strategy and vision, while taking input from the football department. A decision to sustain the list with top ups appears to be a clear strategic direction talked up by the Chairman.

I don't think anyone here would complain with the role he played at the club when he arrived.
I assume he was looking for a bigger role, and that's fair enough.

I do think the club made the error in not accepting his resignation 12 months ago.

Only possible reason for that, and GW accepting it, could have been because there was a question mark on Kelly and he could move in to his CEO position. I don't know, but just trying to make sense of why we weren't looking for a new footy manager during the year.

But good luck to him. He is a CEO. It doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks I’ll take, the “quite an achievement’’ award, by Sideswipe. To come up with the ‘shitest’ comment on BF is certainly quite an achievement.

In my defence, I have witnessed a number of successful managers slash and burn a legacy when they didn’t get what they want, usually a promotion, but not always.

Also, when one foot is out the door, I have also seen more than not, sub-optimal performance. The literal definition of ‘mini revenge’ is when you have a revenge without doing it deliberately. I just made that up, so do with it what you want LOL.

I dont think it's unusual to think it's a negative term. I think that I heard a commentator say it years ago.
It might have been jack dyer and I thought he was having a go at them. It's weird that they like it

  • 'Revenge' is defined as the action of hurting or harming someone in return for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands.
  • 'Mini' is defined as denoting a miniature version of something.
  • 'Literal' is defined as taking words in their usual or most basic sense without metaphor or exaggeration (emphasis added).
So, how do you get a literal definition of mini revenge being a revenge that's not done deliberately?

The simplest answer, you just made it up, literally. Just like you concocted a theory about Graham Wright white-anting a club he played 201 games for, won a premiership with and later resuscitated in the wake of a long-serving coach and President departing their roles.

What a disgusting title for a thread. Without Graham Wright we wouldn't have won a premiership last year. I'll be forever grateful for what he achieved in the two years he was there. It was a mistake for the club to agree to a sabbatical. Everyone knew he wasn't coming back. We lost a year in getting a replacement. Our recruitment is looking like it's going from bad (Schultz) to worse (Houston). Many people queried why we recruited Bobby Hill two years ago. Well, that's an example of clever recruiting grabbing him when it was apparent he wanted to go to Essendon. Now Craig McRae has openly stated he wants players, not draft picks. In two years we'll have a second rate midfield when you take Nick Daicos out of it and no tall forwards to kick the ball down to. Craig McRae is a brilliant coach but should leave someone else to do the recruiting. Sort of reminds me of Mick Malthouse in the early 2000's who did the recruiting for the team - said we needed another ruckman and got McKee from Richmond, which cost us pick 3, which could have got us Matthew Pavlich in the 2000 draft - if that had happened it would have landed us the 2002 and 2003 premierships. Eddie restructured the recruitment department around 2005, which led to a premiership in 2010. Now we're back to the amateur days at the Collingwood football club where we throw the cheque book at players we don't need. Graham Wright could have prevented all this from happening. It should be Craig Kelly you should be directing your loathing to, not Graham Wright.
A lot of rubbish sprinkled through this post. Our midfield will be fine with the likes of the Daicos brothers, Degoey, Perryman, Ed Allan and Mcguane as our future and in the short term we still have Crisp and Mitchell to turn to if required.

Calling the recruitment of Schultz a bad decision is also ridiculous. He had a solid first year and will only get better.
