Just got home from the MCG. What a great game. To the Pies fans, don't worry about your team. If you play like that evety week, you will win a hell of a lot more than you lose. Collingwood's skill level has increased 100% since 1999.

Having said that, I think the best team won today. Collingwood played a great first half, but we played a better second half. Essendon really threw themselves at everything in the last quarter, which was necessary to stop the Collingwood surge. I thought we were "reasonably" close to our best today (but not quite), which is a pretty good measure of how well the Pies can play if they are switched on. I thought our Bomber fans lifted late in the 3rd quarter too, which helped to lift the team.

I thought Jason Johnson swung the game in the 3rd quarter, with his bustling midfiled work, and I thought Fletcher was the difference in defence. As for best on ground? I would have picked O'Bree ahead of Tarrant.

All in all a great game, that was highly skilled, tough, and pressure-filled, yet played in a great spirit between the two most heavily supporterd clubs in Victoria.

i thought it was alessio that swung the game, along with jason, ses was in everything, clearly beat rocca and fraser and gave our midfielders first use of the ball, also had several inside 50's
centre clearences were 12-3 at half time in collingwoods favour, alessios work turned that around and we started to clear the ball from most stoppages,
this is were blumfield, hird, caracella, and johnson came into the game

And I also thought the Carlton / Essendon match was the game of the year!

...

(OK, I think this one was just as good, but it wouldn't do if everyone just agreed with each here!

Walshy,

Yes, Alessio was sensational. He was very physical and contested hard all day.

When I said that Fletcher was the diference, I say that taking nto account that we lifted in the second half. That is when he lifted, and our defence lifted. We conceded only 5 goals in the second half (after conceding 10 in the first half) and Fletcher was a big reason for that in the second half.

Rocca is a hack. Do we agree? He has no ground level skill, and I reckon he is a bit of a softy. I am not putting down Collingwood here Pie fans, because some of your younger players are very good (Lonie, Tarrant, Fraser, etc etc), but Rocca is a dud. Incredibly overrated.

Totally Impartial tv viewer here.

I thought the game was excellent. O'Bree definately best on ground. Unfortunately for the Woods only he, Fraser, Tarrant and perhaps Hollands played with any great concistency.

The flow of the game changed when Alessio replaced Barnes. He took control of the centre bounces and made space accross half forward. Although I think a lot of ruck infringements went unpenalised.

Essendon are not in the same great form they shopwed most of last year but Collingwood have improved out of sight. I doubt the game will be that close again next time.

Some interesting observations:

When the new bloke for the Bombers, don't remember his name #45, came on to Buckley, Buckley went straight to Hird as if to try and use his own tagger to break up Hird's game.

Interesting to see Lloyd playing so far up the ground so often. And Lucas obviously visits BigFooty coz he was trying to get the ball on quicker and use handball to others running past.

Was good to see Malthouse did not over react when Fraser had his couple of stuff ups. some coaches would have dragged the young guy and shattered his confidence.

FANTASTIC GAME!!! Too bad Collingwood didn't win but it was a great game. Dan and Walshy just thought I should tell you that your cheersquad is really really really bad. I couldn't really hear them and I was less then 10m away. I think a few of them wanted hit me because I was giving them shit.

Oh well...well done to Essendon, just hope we shocked a few people today!

I thought it was a great game, and well done to the pies, you were solid all day. But I have to disagree with you Dan, I don't think we were near our best. We did some very good things, but had a lot of silly mistakes and skill errors. Having said that, Collingwood had their share of errors too.

Really good game. Yes Alessio was a key but Tarrant and O'Bree were kept quiet in the last quarter when the had been brilliant earlier on. Barnard was important too.

Only negatives were

1) too much inconsistency in umpiring
2) Essendon seem to hit the man delivering the ball (kick) late far too often (ie hit after he's kicked it) and don't get pinged.

That's OK Joel, you didn't shock many people!

Anyone who can get within 15 points of Richmond must be a good team!

I don't think the game was close because Essendon were not at their best. There is this thing called the passing of time that does not allow every player to play at an optimum level week in, week out. I think Collingwood outpaced Essendon, out emotioned them, were unlucky to not make the right plays at the right time, proven themselves to be right up there and shown that the gap between the Bombers and the rest has narrowed.

It would have been interesting to see who would have thought Essendon should have won if they had been beaten. If some fans don't start to get it into their heads that all teams start to come back to the field eventually and are not guaranteed a win playing their best football, then they are going to be in for a rude awakening. The Bombers will only lose a couple of games this year and finish minor premiers, but this year they may well find an enthusiastic team of go-getters fronting up to tackle them rather than the aging warriors.

#45 was Damien Peverill. Made his debut on Schwass last week and played a blinder. I think he held his own on Buckley. The future's bright (not orange

.

Anyway...I think they started well and finished well but were totally outplayed in the middle two quarters. It's weird, even as the game turned around and they came back it didn't really appear as if they were doing anything different, for the most part Collingwood seemed to be doing the same things. The statistics were almost all clearly in the Pies' favour.

I'll agree with Dan on one thing...the crowd helped them today. I've thought our crowds were usually pretty pedestrian but it seemed much louder in the place today. The Ponsford was rockin'.

both Roccas have been talked up for too long fair enough Savs kicked over 500 or woteva but he cant just sit on his arse for years after doing that and Anthony will be headed rite where his brothers gone if he keeps sulking... to another club

sPiDeR eVeRiTt and RiCkY oLaReNsHaW
~kewlest players round!!!

I dont support either team but today's game was the best game of the year...The 2 teams played in the spirit of our fellow Anzac's...I think Shane O'Bree was best on the ground over the 4 quarters followed by tarrant or hird...A few costly turnovers did cost collingwood the game in the end..Essendon did play well to win..Caracella Mveigh and Alessio lifted at the end of 3rd to get ess back in the game...Collingwood has improved out of sight and i think they can nearly make the 8 if they can win the close ones..This month will be the big test..As for essesndon the young kids played well and they had to play there best to win..Lets hope round 20 is just as good...

Who cares about the cheersuqad? We probably had 45,000 of the 84,000 supporters, and they helped to lift us late in the third term and into the last quarter. You could sense a lift in the Bomber crowd (Essendon home game remember), when we kicked a couple of goals late in the third term to erode ther 2 goal deficit. I could sense at that point, that we were going to win.

Hard to say, TD. In the game against the Blues, we didn't look sharp. In today's game we looked far sharper and surer with our ball handling. Technically, we are never at our best, because perfection is impossible to achieve, but we were far better than we were two weeks ago. I don't think there were too many skill errors, taking into account the windy conditions. The effort and desire was certainly there - at least in greater abundance than it was two weeks ago. We were carved up in the midfield a bit, but this was mainly due to the abcense of Misiti. Heffernan and Rioli, who are both adequate replacements in the midfield for Misiti were out as well, so our options were a bit limited. We really relied on JJ to get us back the midfield domination we had been lacking. I thought our effort was commendable.

Match of the year, my arse.

As Bill Woodfull would have said, "There were two teams out there ... but only one of them was playing football."

Sheedy should be assassinated for those flooding tactics he used on us. What an unspeakably ugly style of football Essendon plays.

It worked for you because we made a lot of mistakes. We are still the kings of the clangers. When we turn it on, as we did in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, we are the most exciting team in the history of football. But when we are bad ... we are shitfull.

I reckon Josh Fraser is one of the finest players in the game. But he was terrible today. There's no other way to put it. Even Ryan Lonie stuffed up a couple of times, but he made up for it with two of the most inspirational goals you'd ever see.

Tarrant was an effective target ... Buckley was superb all day ... Great 50th game for Licuria ... Old Man Richo just keeps rolling along in defence ... O'Bree did a lot of excellent work in between clangers. Sensational mark by Leon Davis.

And Tarkyn Lockyer!!!!

Magnificent.

As for Essendon ... sheer arse. A disgrace to football.

PURE GOLD ONCE AGAIN ALF.

Hey dan your mob are not as passionate as you tell us infact someone should get amongst your lot and teach them the art of supporting. The essenscum mob at bottom level in ponsford were absolutely shocking i cant recall hearing them all afternoon in fact they seemed to be preocupied with the fanatical support comming from the cheer squad above them as numerous times we had to remind them where the football field was, which goes to prove half the stuff you waffle on about is so full of shit.

good ole collingwood for ever,we know how to play the game, side by side we stick together to uphold the REAL magpies name, see the barrackers are shouting,as all barrackers should,YES the premiership's a cakewalk for the good ole collingwood.

Um this is a ridiculous arguement. Who gives a rats about crowd size and how many supporters you have or % or whatever. I remember hearing Eddie McGuire saying on the radio how it was a guaranteed "100,000 or 95,000 people turning up tomorrow" and it was 83,000. Never been 100,000 to a h&away match ever in the history of AFL football. Never will. Why do Australians have this stupid thing about crowds and supporters, I'll never know.

If any of you really wanna see a crowd go to Maracana in RioDeJaniero, I went 2 years ago to see Flamengo Vs VascoDeGama there was 148,000 people and they were going off, the place was absolutely heaving like no AFL game 99prelim not even a shadow of this soccer match. Flam VS Vasco makes Ess-Coll look like Williamstown vs Sandringham, I'm not kidding.

PS...Dan25 I disagree the match of the year so far was Car-Ess cause you lost.
