Great grand final matchups we were robbed of

Could have been a brilliant forward line in the mid 90s had Jako and Bennett stuck around.

Not sure about the “gun mids” term. Workmanlike, yes, but I don’t see an equivalent to Williams, Matera, Buckley, Knights, etc.
Na Tingay was a star but cruelled by injury, both Lovetts were jets but Glenn again couldn't get his body right, Viney and Lovell were very good. Curse of Norm smith was in full force in the early 90s

Disagree on that last line.

Richmond were comfortably the best team in the comp across 2017-2020. One bad game in a PF stopped them from winning 4 in a row, but they finished that 2018 season 2 games and 15% clear in 1st position at the end of the H&A. There is not a chance in hell any interstate side was beating Richmond in a final at the MCG that year, such was their dominance at home.

It was a period where a bunch of all time club greats were in their prime together, the game plan stood up in finals, and they were ridiculously strong at the MCG. Winning it in 2020 completely away from home after a s**t start showed how good they were, I don't think they had anything to prove then after winning 2 flags previously.
Eagles were better, Richmond very lucky that they were injured or no 19/20 for Richmond.

Swans vs Geelong in 2013 would’ve been interesting too. Cats going for 4 in 6 years and another odd year flag while the Swans would’ve been going for back to back. The game we got that year was a snoozefest with classic Ross Lyon footy.

Should’ve met at least once in the 2010s.

We were extremely lucky to be within cooee in that Prelim, we were pretty comprehensively outplayed.

The reality is, for mine, that when Hawkins' back was done and Dawson Simpson stuffed his knee, we were in big trouble. We basically had to win the footy without a competitive ruckman, and kick goals without a competitive tall forward.
I was at the game, we were into that game up to our eyeballs.. outplayed the last 15-20 mins. No week off, Hawkins cooked and missing Enright and Chapman

Will happen 9 yearslater

Richmond vs West Coast in 2018 would have been mouth watering. The match in round 22, 2019 between the sides showed what could have been..
I'm not sure why but I feel like Richmond would've absolutely pantsed us had they got through against Collingwood. We beat them earlier in the year in Perth but Richmond at the G is a scary prospect to come up against.

May the best team win this weekend

They were the best team that year and just had everything go wrong in the PF. It happens - shows that sometimes a fair chunk of luck goes into winning a flag.

Alistair Clarkson played as big of role as any in the snoozefest of that game. Basically played a slow game of keepings off to negate the frantic pressure and tackling game of Freo.

There is an alternative universe somewhere where Eagles didn't implode in 2007 and met Geelong in the Grand Final. That would have been incredible.
I disagree with that. Even in 05/06, the Eagles weren’t as good as the 07/08 Cats. We were just smashing sides into oblivion most weeks, and I don’t think anyone around that era could match how we played in the 2007 GF.

Maybe. I remember that game Eagles played against at Skilled, and if I recall they had Cousins and Cox out and they still put up a great fight; it was reasonably close until the mid point of the third quarter (this is all from memory though). It was also eagles first loss of the season.

Eagles had the midfield up stack up against geelongs. It would have just been interesting, is all.

IIRC it was a six goal win, not exactly close - and Geelong was only just starting to work out how good it actually was.

We're also forgetting Port was the only team to beat Geelong in the last 4 months of that '07 season. Port were terrible in that GF but I don't think anyone would've gotten within 50 points of the Cats that day. It was ruthless.

Even if Judd, Cousins and co were fit, it would’ve been a 6 goal win to Geelong
