Picking up a thread on the North board...

Mike Sheahan has an article today saying Brent Harvey is catching up on Barry Cable, North's "best little man".

"Little" is a relative term, but who would you put as your club's best? And who would you rate the best small player you've seen?

At his peak, Mark Mercuri was one of the best players I've seen wear an Essendon jumper.

Now: Crawf by a country mile at Hawthorn.

Historically: hard to go past Peter Crimmins.

I never saw Crimmo play (I wasn't born when he passed away), but I've seen the respect in which he's held by everybody associated with the club and seen some footage of him in action.

Best I've seen live is Crawf, though.

The rat wasn't bad.;)

John Platten was great. Crawf comes a close 2nd just because of the success Platten had.

phil matera or dean kemp probably...

ben cousins was shorter than kemp but he certainly wasn't built as small as kempy.

For Carlton Fraser Murphy was a good "little" player in the 80's. :)

No offence but Fraser was an OK player.
Nothing like Wayne Johnson, Sheldon, Harmes, Ashman & the other mosquito fleet at Carlton in the 80's.

At Carlton - Wayne Johnson for me, big game player & was great in Grand Finals.

Yeah, I was just thinking really little. ;)

Whayne Johnston for me, followed by Deisel and Harmes. All Premiership heroes.

Can't forget Vinnie Cottogio while we're talking about the Mosquito fleet. (Although the afro made him look a lot taller than he actually was)

Ricky Jackson was an absolute gun

Brett Bowey showed a bit

Brad Gotch was alright

Brent Heaver played some brilliant games

The dominator was 180cm so maybe he is a bit tall.
Pretty hard to go past Williams, but i loved watching Johnson.:)

To me as a young fella and only having watched modern footy Boomer Harvey is the best small man of all time.

Running, bouncing, fakie handpasses, crumbing goals, running midfield support.

His 5 3 vote games in a row last year was a supreme effort and it is my opinion that he was the deciding factor in the Big V win over the dream team this year.

Dale Weightman

Great player, especially in state games. Unfortunately only played in a few finals which is a shame for a guy of his class because he shone in big games.
I remember Weightman getting reported for striking Paul Salmon to the head. How he reached that high i don't know.
His defense was that he used to chew sugar lollies to control his diabetes but on this day he forgot the lollies & suffered a mental fadeout.
Guess what ? The tribunal bought it & good old sugar got off. :D

Just last night I read (on this board) that Weightman was originally recruited as a CHF.
