Anyone see the sports liftout in Sunday's Age? They had a list of the 50 greatest moments and I was reading through it then you had to turn over for the #1 moment and ...........there was a double page spread about EJ's last lap of the MCG [sob!]. Inc. a big pic of him and Ted Jr. It was really well done.
They had an email address for people to disagree with the list and add there own moments - it was clearly deficient in a lot of Bulldogs ones I must say. What ones would you add? The rally to save the club in 89 I would say for a start!

Memorable moments for the Bulldogs

54 Grand Final win
89 Merger Rally
The last Whitten Oval game
Hawk breaks Whittens Record
Templetons 15 and record score
Whitten last game
1st VFL game
VFA Champions vs VFL champion game
1st winning final
1st Colonial game
etc

I recken the game V Geelong in 97 whan we hit the top of the ladder mid season , it was great.
The first time we won in Sydney in years!
That bloody prelim, which so could have been.........................
The 2000 Ess v Dogs
Tha 89 fight back ( was on the ad, in pigtails!!)
Our first win this year felt pretty good!!
When Nathan Brown wore only a sock at the strip night....Yum!! sorry, being a bit silly now, drank too much watching the brownlow................talk soon.

All the Brownlows!
Templeton's one was particularly memorable for me..........I was at the club that night during the count...........our best CHF and one of the best ever, cetainly well deserved.
Granty turning down megabucks from Port to save us when we were on the ropes
Gabby Allan's pass to Beaser for a magic win against the Pies
Billy running around Graeme Wright to goal for a magic win against the Pies
.............and the ones you guys have mentioned.........[nice work being in the ad Woofgirl!]
Dougie breaking EJ's record was magic, seeing EJ flick pass the ball to him before the game. I watched him from the Dougie stand and he was standing there on the back flank during the game while the ball was down the other end, looking around at the stands and taking it all in. He didn't seem to bother much with his opponent, the ball just went straight to him and he would blast us back into attack. It ended up being a nice win, against the Bears I think.

Chops I don't know about the first game at Colonial........for me it symbolizes what to me is one of the AFL's worst deeds ie getting rid of Waverley, though nobody here is likely to agree with me. Did we win that first game? I was there but can't recall it .........to me it doesn't seem like home, maybe it will with time but sharing with other clubs also takes away from that.

Some other personal faves

Alan Stoneham playing on from a free to goal and win against Fitzroy at Waverley
In 1983? when we beat Essendon at the Western Oval............after the game the ground announcer said..........'Ladies and gentlemen.............Footscray are now top of the VFL ladder!!'
Johnno and the team acknowledging the fans after the last game this year
Cookie's great play at full forward in the 97 finals

Maybe not a great moment, still significant. We lost to Brisbane, first game under a closed roof!

Yes had happier days but important in history of club.

I agree Iso. I actually umpired that night at Colonial, the Bulldogs first game played at Colonial and the first ever under indoors (at half time that is in the little league).:D

James Cook (Cookie) leaning against the goal post arms crossed in a reserves game. When the ball came down he was slow off the mark and swung his leg out to try to trip his opponent up.

Kicked 5 or 6 for the day I can't remember exactly but sums up Cookie's attitude. Could be brilliant but very lazy. Actually knew Cookie through girls we dated and we wasn't that bad of a bloke. One line he said to me once was "I may not be the best footballer but I'm going to have a dam good time doing it".

I remember the first game at colonial too. we led by over 5 goals at quarter time I think, then Bradshaw kicked 8 (?) and we lost. Great memory.

Two other great memories - MacPherson dropping the opposition runner up at Sydney.

And I am surprised no-one has mentioned MacPherson's (or was it Gronewegans) team photo form the mid 80's.

Dougie coming back from his knee op was great too.

What about Captain Gronewagon and teams end-of-season flight to Hawaii.

Also last game at WO in 97 and Brad Hardie's jumper wave.:)

Hardies first game at Princess Park v Carlton 1985, I can still remember it . The red hair and long sleeves >>>>>.. and we won.

A few debutants that game! Fruitcake Ford? who else?

I think Purser, Sewell, Daniels and Williams arrived a year earlier? Great recruiting. Was it 10 new players in first game??

I remember Wynds first game, when a young under developed stick was thrown to the wolfs and gave his all. We clapped him off! We all thought anything was better than Richard Cousins but this guy was going to be good.

In 1990, even though we lost the first game, the debuts of Grant, Cameron amd Standfield within 2 weeks was memorable. Start of a new era, Wheeler/Gordon/Hawk captain. Which is why 2003 excites me.

And Peter Foster two weeks later.

I think that John Taylor made his debut later in the season in the home game against Collingwood. Has a chance to win the game right at the end but froze.

That was the last match I attended before I left Australia in March 2000.

I cried as I clapped the team off, not because of the loss, but because I thought I'd never see the Doggies again.

Little did I know at that time that I'd be back to visit in a little over two years and I'd be watching us win the Grand Final in 2003!:D

To add to the list :

As I recounted once before either on this board or the old official board :
Round 12 - 14 June 1980 - Junction Oval

Footscray 25.17 167 d. Fitzroy 18.15 123

It was our first win for the season after losing the first 11 matches! I remember jumping up and down on the old wooden benches in the outer after the match!

For those youngins who have only experienced the mostly winning Buuldog sides of the 90s and 00s, it's matches like this that fortified my love of the Bulldogs. I ain't never been no bandwagoner, no way, no how!

A personal favourite :

Round 7 2002. After over two years of not seeing the Doggies, just watching the team run out onto Colonial was enough for me at the time. However, a win against them awful Magpies would have made the day even better! :(

Yes I was there. I remember Shane Loveless klicked 6? My cousin player in the little league as well. What a terrible year! Saved by Tempeltons brownlow.

I was there too!

Royce Hart as coach..... what a disaster. I think his game plan was the same way as he played ' You just take the mark in the pack, turn around and kick the goal from 60 metres , simple really" He never could understand why the rest of the players just couldn't do it.

I'm a bit biased towards Cookie but didn't notice him doing stuff like that. Guess he was peed off about playing in the ressies?
Have you got any more stories about him LB? All I know of him off the field is he used to be a teacher?
