The worst number 1 draft picks would be a dead heat between Richard Lounder, Stephen Hooper, Anthony Banik and John Hutton.

Can I add that Lounder and Banik were both Richmond "gems"! :D

waterhouse is the worst without a doubt. hird/ judd/ brown and soon buddy franklin would have to be up there as the best not to have gone #1

Greatest player NOT to go number 1 is a stupid argument, because the number 1 pick usually never ends up being the best, so that leaves hundreds of brilliant footballers of many years to pick.

Eg - Chris Judd didn't go number 1 in 2001.
Eg - James Hird was pick 79 in the 1990 draft.
Eg - Shane Crawford was pick 13 in the 1991 draft.
Eg - Scott Burns was pick 90 in the 1992 draft.
Eg - Nigel Lappin was pick 2 in the 1993 draft.
Eg - Barry Hall was pick 19 in the 1995 draft.
Eg - Chad Cornes was pick 9 in the 1997 draft.
Eg - Simon Black was pick 31 in the 1997 draft.
Eg - Adam Goodes was pick 43 in the 1997 draft.
Eg - Matthew Scarlett was pick 45 in the 1997 draft.
Eg - Matthew Pavlich was pick 4 in the 1999 draft.

ETC....
These guys could all be considered 'the best players not to go number 1'.

As for the worst, I would have to say
1987 - Richard Lounder
1988 - Alex McDonald
1990 - Stephen Hooper

And from then on, the number ones are all pretty decent players.
The best number 1 ever probably being Nick Riewoldt or Luke Hodge, maybe even Jeff White.

EVERYONE LOOK AT PICK #21 IN THE 1991 DRAFT!

I assume you mean in draft years? Besides, there have been less than 20 number one picks, and about 70 or so non number one picks per year, weight of numbers suggets 1 won't be the best.

The days of Hird and Grant are over, Hird was hidden in Canberra, and the draft doesn't even go past 100 now.

What about Hutton? At least Clive had a medium sized career....

To be fair on Hutton he was drafted #1 at age 25 after 1 season of WAFL football in which he kicked a big haul - up to that point he was a country footballer. Had some big days in front of the goals for an undersized FF in some terrible teams but was probably simply out of his league. Blame Robert Walls. ;)

That all might still happen these days any way. Pick 75 or so these days is as good as pick 100 but its much more difficult these days ;)

That was not so much because teams didn't rate him, it was more because the sly Doggies made sure noone even knew about him.

Yes that is kind of true although we drafted him as a 15 year old kid. His first season as a 17 year old full forward he kicked 51 goals and that till this day is an AFL record :thumbsu:
