Greatest Player not to go number 1......and worst to have been.

I think you can dismiss every draft prior to about 1993 (or a bit earlier) as it was a lotto. It wasn't until about 1998 or so when the draft became the #1 source of players and became so heavily scruitinised.

Willie Dick's son Dean and nephew Brad play for Essendon and Collingwood respectively.

Hutton wasn't the worst. He did kick a couple of bags, most notably the bears final game.

Hutton kicked 9 goals for the Bears in the game in 1992 when Geelong kicked the record score against them (37.17 239 for those who are interested). Pretty amazing effort considering that game was absolutely one-way traffic to the Cats end.

FWIW, Stephen Hooper is probably the worst #1 I have seen. Had no discernible skills other than being a big unit. His career highlight was KO'ing Fatty Lamb in a tackle.

Waterhouse was an exciting player who's career was killed by injuries. He was starting to become a very good player when the injury bug hit.

Anyone that says Clive Waterhouse really needs to look at the facts and see how much of a ridiculous comment it is.

Yep. Waterhouse had a very good career, given the amount of injuries he copped. Was talented enough to be worthy of pick 1, just couldn't stay on the park.
178 goals from 106 games is a pretty decent return, for a bloke who was absolutely ruined with injury. He an Modra were a very very strong combination for a couple of seasons. I think they kicked about 50 each in 2000. Shame injury soon took them both out of the game.

I assume you mean in draft years? Besides, there have been less than 20 number one picks, and about 70 or so non number one picks per year, weight of numbers suggets 1 won't be the best.

The days of Hird and Grant are over, Hird was hidden in Canberra, and the draft doesn't even go past 100 now.

Lol thats a stupid thing to say. Nick Reiwoldt went no. 1 and came from the Gold Coast.

Surely if Willie Dick had a daughter she would be called Ivana.

Greatest player NOT to go number 1 is a stupid argument, because the number 1 pick usually never ends up being the best, so that leaves hundreds of brilliant footballers of many years to pick.

So true. There are hundreds.

Sammy Mitchell at pick 36 in 2001, was a good pickup for us. Nobody wanted him in 2000 at a time when pure athletes were the preferred option for a lot of clubs.

Not the best, non-number one, but good value at 36.

Worst is Brendon Goddard.

The worst number one is Lounder.

The greatest player not to go number one is Simon Goodwin who was picked with selection 18 in the 1996 PSD.

He looks like Brad Johnson when he plays as a forward. :thumbsu:

Many people forget that Dean Kemp was pick 117 in the 89? draft.

Buddy Franklin would have to be right up there if you are talking about players that should have actually been taken with the #1 Pick. EVERYONE knew about him, about how skilled and how talented he was, and that he would more than likely develop into a very unique player. Richmond didn't only not take him at #1, they didn't take him at #4 either. For shame.

Brent harvey is in that list, he's pretty damn good.

And drew banfield was no star but i think he has the games record for a no. 1 pick as well as 2 premierships, so his career was alright.

hawthorn and bulldogs passed buddy up with their 1st picks too , not just richmond

the reason why james hird wasnt picked until 75odd is the fact he missed both u18's carnivals with injury and being from canberra it was a big thing to see how he would compete against decent opposition

You are correct that Goodwin is a star. You are incorrect that he is the best player not to go number one.

This is a peculiar thread - it is effectively asking us to nominate the best player since the draft was introduced. I suppose you would have to say Judd. Pretty boring really.

Also, you are spot on that the 1995 draft is pooh - not much talent there. But guys like Brent Harvey and Darren Milburn are in Goodwin's bracket. And guys like Barry Hall, Matthew Primus and Daniel Chick were in his bracket when at their respective primes.

Honourable mention also to Danial Bradshaw - underrated player, good to watch.

waterhouse is the worst without a doubt. hird/ judd/ brown and soon buddy franklin would have to be up there as the best not to have gone #1

WHAT? Waterhouse had a good career that was cut down with injuries! ..and for those that said Hutton, he was a good medium sized forward in a crap team.
What did Hooper and Lounder do?

Worst is Brendon Goddard. The McDonald's and Lounder's were at a time when drafting was very speculative. The world knew how to draft by the time Goddard was picked.

Re best, Hird or was Carey drafted?

WTF?

This thread is talking about the worst player to go number 1, not just the number 1 who you don't like because he punched your lights out at school once then bonked your girlfriend.

I was referring to the draft Goodwin was drafted in and I stand by that.

You could make an argument for Cox as well.

Goodwin has been a better player than Harvey who is a little squib IMO and Milburn who hasn't made four AA teams. He's also more consistent than Hall who is a headcase who played for two clubs and needed a wake up call to deliver on his talent.

Goodwin has better skills than Primus.

He's underrated in Victoria because he hasn't played for a team based in Melbourne where the media pump up everyone who has pulled on a boot.

He looks every bit as good and capable overhead as Brad Johnson playing as a forward this season.

Not bad for a wingman/onballer.
