Greatest prelims of all time

****ing doggies. Prelim specialists or what. 97 and 2009 they should have won those games. Would have loved to seen them in a gf. I don't think they would have won either had they got there though. In the other prelims they were second best by a country mile.

Great idea for a thread actually.

The 1994 Prelim between Geelong and North is the greatest game ive ever seen let alone a greatest prelim. End to end momentum shifting classic with that ending and Ablett doing nothing until that mark. A remarkable game I will never tire of watching.

No doubt you have watched this a lot more over the years than I have, but have to agree that in terms of a great game, it was the best prelim I've seen in my lifetime and we lost.

2007 was an amazing game (apart from the result). Pies travelled to Perth to take on Eagles the week before and won in extra time. Eagles minus, if I remember correctly, Judd, Cousins and maybe Kerr.

Despite the travel and extra game time under high pressure in WA, plus missing a ruckman which allowed Ottens to dominate, they put in a great effort against a far superior side in the Cats.

Sliding doors - despite being thrashed in the Granny, a goal the other way and Port would have been playing a Pies side minus Bucks (who did his hammy for the last time near the end) and Rocca (who had injured his achilles towards the end as well). With the game in the balance both were on the bench injured and no chance for the following week.

The 2004 St Kilda v Port prelim was an epic game, just a pity we were on the wrong end of the result.

The 2009 St Kilda v Bulldogs prelim was epic too, it was a low scoring game but it was close and tense the whole way with thankfully a better result for us.

The umpiring in the Hawthorn v Adelaide prelim in 2012 was even worse, no prizes for guessing which team benefited from the terrible umpiring.

Keep pushing the agenda Plugger

I thought we were unlucky 1985. Hawks were better team for the year but we had the chance.

I am old enough to remember 1987 - that was a game and a half. Hawks were no chance on a 30 degree GF day after that.

Most of the other good ones have been mentioned:
1994 - North v Geel
1996 - Syd v Ess
1997 - WB v Adel
1999 - Ess v Carl
2004 - Port v St K
2007 - Geel v Coll
2011 - Coll v Haw

I guess I'll never go back and watch the 2013 Prelim for the same reasons.

hawthorn last 5 prelims have all be pretty darn good:
fremantle
port adelaide
geelong
crows
collingwood

gotta hand it to those hawks they know how to put on a show. even the fremantle one was closer than the scoreline suggested.

Yeh and it was the first time a Vic team had won an interstate prelim ever.

Was a good game I thought. Fremantle got the early jump then Hawks fought back for the lead, arm wrestle after that but Hawks broke it open late in the last term.

Nothing beats 2013 PF against the Cats though.

Not counting Hawks prelims though, 2007 Geelong v Collingwood was good. WC vs Adelaide in 2006 was also epic, WC doing it the hard way.

Not a prelim but Swans vs Geelong 2005 Semi Final brings a smile to my face.

It's really 1999 and end thread - anyone suggesting other games is kidding themselves.

2007 would be the second best game I've been to live. Never heard a group of fans carry their team as much as Pies supporters did that night - the noise after every Collingwood goal was deafening.

Collingwood v Hawthorn 2011

Amazing game

Was there and the last 5 minutes were the loudest I've ever heard a football match!

That tackle by Cloke in the last minute makes me remember how good he was in 2011.:fire:

Attached is his 2011 highlight vid for all those pies supporters out there who miss the real Trav. :(

Probably the most emotionally draining game I've watched.

Oddly, I had little care factor for the GF result the week after. I think that prelim was Collingwood's real GF that year. There was a sense of finality to it, and like everybody (particularly Malthouse) had used every last drop. The GF became almost a footnote.

Hey Plugger, have the many hundreds, quite possibly thousands of post you made to point out 'cheating' made much of the difference? Like have the AFL taken note of everything you have said and gone about making some changes?
Because it would be very disappointing to hear that your countless hours dedicated to this topic where going to waste, dare I even say maybe slightly sad and pathetic that a grown man would dedicate this much time to something that no one gives anything close to a **** about?
But that couldn't possibly be the case could it? You wouldn't waste all this time if it wasn't making some sort of an impact, would you?
