On After The Bounce last night Chief mentioned that during the Gold Coast v Hawks game it looked at one stage that the "upset of the century" could occur.

So what are the biggest upsets you can think of?

Being young at the time, I can't remember what the odds were etc. for Adelaide's inaugural game against the Hawks, but surely that was a massive upset at the time with Adelaide winning by over 10 goals?

St Kilda beating Carlton in 1995 is one I can think of where a low side (3rd bottom in Saints case) has beaten the top side.

Please note: Not for shock GF/Final wins, as obviously these teams aren't that unevenly matched.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree, but you only have to ask the media, Hawthorn 2012 were the greatest thing since sliced bread. So that would have to be up there.... ;)

In all seriousness. The year Freo won the wooden spoon. Their win over Adelaide would have to be up there.

Yeah when we finished bottom I think in '10.

Nope. Was round 19, 2009, we just went through the middle of a rubbish tanking scandal and had just beaten Essendon at home.

We went over a day later than normal and we had channel 10 go with us.

StKilda v Hawthorn at Waverley Park in 1999. StKilda were 5th at the time & the Hawks 12th

Pretty sure the Saints were leading by 63 points at half time & managed to get beaten... Given the score status of the game at half time & the teams respective positions on the ladder, this was an epic upset :(

A couple involving the Eagles:

Collingwood v West Coast round 9, 2005. Last v First, Collingwood with 1 win, the Eagles undefeated and the Pies charge home in the last to win by 23 points.

The other is West Coast v Brisbane round 14, 2007. The Eagles were third and the Lions had lost 7 in a row and this was at the house of pain at the time. The Lions pretty much lead from start to finish to win by 27.

They have been said already but West Coast losing to Brisbane in 2007 at home in the game Ben Cousins was MEANT to come back, and Freo beating Carlton after they had won 15 odd in a row.

Fitzroy beating the Eagles in 1991 wasn't as big as it was the last round and the result didn't really matter.

Collingwood's 2005 was ****ed. Won 1 of their first 8, hit a purple patch and beat the Eagles (qualified 2nd, 23 points) Hawthorn (14th, 28) Geelong (6th, 25) lost narrowly to Sydney (3rd, 1 point) and then beat Port Adelaide (8th, 31). Only other loss in that period was to Melbourne (7th, 35 points). Outside of the purple patch we went 1-15, against much worse sides.

In fact, aside from our games against second clash against Adelaide St Kilda that year, our average result against top eight teams was a loss by 1.1 points. Of course, that involved a fair bit of selective sampling so adding in those other two games and that becomes a 17.45 point loss.

Average result against bottom 8 sides; 31.63 point loss.
