It's an interesting discussion.
Is Grundy the best standalone Ruck of the 3? Probably, albeit his tapwork is generally disappointing.
As a shorter ruckman by modern standards, he jumps early to protect the ball with strength, but his body position is too contorted to control the ball much of the time.
I think that his contested marking is also disappointing.
But it's mainly the price that he's contracted at that is the problem. He's significantly over priced at say $900k per season.
I think our team would be better with a weaker ruck combo, but with a stronger key forward if a trade out of Grundy was able to facilitate that.
Lewis preferably or Larkey would be my choice of those I think were gettable.
I think that Cameron/Cox with Mitch Lewis makes us a better team than Grundy/Cameron and no Mitch Lewis.
If we could facilitate Grundy out/Lewis in and we pay say $100-150k of Grundy's contract, then I would strongly consider it.
It's not perfect that we'd consider it, like Treloar, like Heath Shaw
before it.
With Graham Wright now managing contracts, the risk of that happening again becomes slimmer.
I don't think that all 3 of Grundy/Cox/Cameron in the same side works.
At worst, the form of the team with Cameron/Cox in it will at least add some selection pressure for Grundy which he has probably not felt in several years.
Hopefully that sees his output lift and makes us a better side.
But given his absence and our current form, I'd certainly be inclined to see Grundy return via the VFL.
Eagles won a premiership without Nic Nat. Richmond won 3 with Nankervis and Soldo.
Gawn's dominant ruck presence in a winning GF team is more the exception than the norm.
