Why do they have "greater", thats terrible for marketing.

As for the name, then why not the pirates?

Western Sydney Pirates?

Its highly marketable, has a renowned universal logo, skull and bones, would look gangster and suit the area..

AFL is dumb is dumb.

Western Sydney Pirates.

Giants is just no. Terrible. Wolves is well, even worse.

Pirates will appeal to the masses, is different, has no geographical location and would really add another marketing dimension to the club.

Kids will love it, wannabe gangsters will love it and people around the area will be drawn to the concept of being pirates in the AFL trying to steal the premiership, it just works on so many levels.

Pirates: already claimed by West Harbour RFC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Harbour_RFC). The Sydney ABC broadcast Shute Shield rugby every Saturday arvo.

How 'bout Sydney Irish (London Irish)? Get rid of 'GWS'. Let them have green uniforms and celebrate the convicts who were put to work in the colonial farms of western Sydney.

I think everyone's lost sight of the fact the "Greater" part of the new team in Sydney is merely the BID TEAM'S name, not necessarily what the AFL team's name will be. I seriously doubt "Greater" would make it as part of the footy team's name.

Like GC17, alot of posters were thinking that THAT was the new AFL team's name, when it was merely the Gold Coast's bid team's name.

Thank you :)

New Sydney Wolves

Cause there's something wrong with the current "old" Sydney team so they need replacing? I'd be offened if I was a Swans supporter.

Or is there some "New Sydney" place I haven't heard of?

The NSW acroynm is clever, but calling any team New is short sighted, and dates quickly.

Thereby creating instant dislike between the two clubs, i.e. the genesis of a rivalry begins with their name. Masterstroke!

forget "New Sydney" as a location 'cos there isn't one; the "New" is referring to the new football team, i.e. the Sydney Wolves are "new".

New York, New England, New Zealand, New Caledonia and New South Wales says hi.

The Giants nickname is too American, with the New York Football Giants and the San Francisco Giants (also formerly of New York).

They should look at something more Australian, like Sydney West Swagmen, Sydney West Drovers, or West Sydney Rustlers.

Won't happen, but West Sydney Webs (as in funnel web spider) would go OK or at least not be another American knock off.

Excellent idea.
West Sydney is the home of the dreaded funnel web spider and the 'web' bit can be incorporated in the jersey design. And it's AUSTRALIAN!!

If they were going to go with an association to the area, then Rangers or Stallions seems more appropriate.
Not sure how these would be seen in a marketing perspective.
