Giants is OK....you'll get used to it. At least it has some sort of relevance.....? have you been out to Sydney's west......if nothing else its big... GWS will have the biggest regional population base of any AFL club (after the Swans become more identified with Sydney Harbour/Opera House regions).

Also most of the GWS Giants players will tower over any other players from other football codes going around. Line them up against the Wests Tigers or Penrith or WS Rovers and you get the picture. Also...as we know everything is bigger in NSW.

...because wolves are so common in NSW?

because crows are so common in South Australia, Tigers so common in Richmond, Kangaroos so common in North Melbourne?

They should at least name it something that is Australian

Tigers, Kangaroos, Crows, Hawks, Demons, Cats, Eagles, Bulldogs, Lions, & Bears are Australian?

:confused:Really? They bolded ones are all native to Australia (or various species of them are, like wedge tailed eagles).

Anyways, how does the name Wolves NOT make sense? Wolves are strong, aggresive, quick animals that work together as a pack to get their prey. Perfect attributes for a football team and West Sydney Wolves rolls of the tongue easily also.

Can you suggest a mascot that is an animal that hunts in packs, but is also overseen by a doddery, delusional, egotistical, publicity-hungy, alcohol-fuelled has-been?

I'll give you the tigers, but you see crows all the time in Adelaide (infact, I saw one picking at a dead minah bird on the road earlier). Also, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the kangaroo a native animal, found all over the country? They might not be common in inner-Melbourne these days, but pre-European-invasion they were probably all over the place.

A few people have taken issue with my comment, so let me clarify - Many of our clubs have non-native animals as mascots, but I believe that Australia has its own identity and we should use this opportunity to name our new clubs something truly Australian.

and tigers and lions and (white) swans and bulldogs are all so aussie

bilbys, potoroos, quokkas, quolls, and bush rats don't really strike fear into the hearts of men

in saying that....a tiger quoll could take your finger off ;)

............f***!
But you all get my point. Wolves don't need to be native to NSW for us to use them as our name.
But the name is painfully american.

Hell, Dingos are just as threatening as Wolves. Pack hunters, bloody intelligent and few things threaten them.

All of these plus what about the Tassie Devils and the now extinct Tassie Tiger?

Wolves is a good name for a club - they can use terms like the "pack" for their supporters

But if they were called the giants then their club song could go something like, "Fe Fi Fo Fum...." :p

i like the gladiators. very original, cant think of any other team in the world with the nickname gladiators... apart from of course the mighty glen iris gladiators!

not sure if this has been said but thought Great White Sharks
Greater Western Sydney so they would go with SHARKS would be logical, sign on greg norman as no 1 ticket holder and have grey/black/white colours, i guess that would make to much sense

Let's hope they drop the "Greater" before they start playing. Or that'll just be another reason I hate them.
