Hannebery's gotta go

When the comms start saying that a player is gone for simply bracing for impact then it's time to take a good hard look at our great game.
Both players had hands on the ball at the same time. Both players were playing the ball. That one player braced to protect himself really should be immaterial.
I still expect a couple of weeks ban though. Such is the hysteria the AFL have created for the media to run with.

He was picking up the ball and turned to protect himself because a player was coming. That's Footy 101.

He probably could have done something different, but at the same time WTF was Hurley doing with his head like that? Hopefully not looking for contact...

And this is the thing. Hurley was just trying to get as low as possible and both players were clearly going for the ball. But was Hurley leading with his head, was Hannebery reckless ???? I've got NFI anymore and I'm sure the players don't either....

Bump???? He hesitated with contact coming his way from a bigger bloke. Rules have made players 2nd guess themselves, and this is another example. He will prob go for it despite no malice and hannebery taking the energy/momentum out of it. Another joke on afl when they suspend him. Not 5 weeks though... grow up junior!!!!

Reminded me if the hodge Murphy clash last year.

Same, hodge got off because he was contesting the ball as was hannabery

IMO this one is bordering on the line of "can we make contact when competing for the footy"

We can't just accept that if someone gets hurt another player needs to be punished

Yes and no - hanneberry turned his hip into the head.

Hodge just came in side on to side on.

50:50 call for mine

Wouldn't be surprised to see the MRP send it straight to the tribunal to get a ruling

The AFL don't pay regard to what the player's intention or level/lack of malice was, nor do they care about lack of split second options. All they seem to consider is the actual impact itself when reviewing these incidents. They'll view it as a potential broken neck = potentially a month in the stands. It's clear as mud these days.

Players with their head down over the ball have always been afforded the protection of the umpires, that law is sacrosanct and has never changed.

Hannebery knew Hurley was over the ball yet still decided to hit him front on, he has made a big mistake, it verges on cowardly and cheap, and i know that Hannebery is not that sort of player.

Even in the heat of the 'battle', it is still only a football field and common sense and a duty of care must prevail.
