Makes sense. There is nothing more shameful than losing to Essendon.
Will be interesting to see the reason why. He has seemed pained at times over the last few years and there was the obvious issues that led to the breakdown of his marriage. I hope he finds some happiness either away from the game or with a fresh challenge, whatever he feels is best for him.
He has definitely earned the right to call his time after 3 flags and in some ways I am a little glad that it hasn't ended after a long sustained decline like Sheedy or Clarkson at the Hawks.

Should be proud of his career, went through many tough periods and came out the other side as one of the most successful coaches ever.
I think he has realised he won't find another flag in reasonable time so is bowing out admirably. Reputation intact. Still a shock but understandable decision.
