And scrap the academies? There really isn't any need for the points system to exist. Time we just let it go.
I’d happily get rid of all academies, father sons, 5 of the teams in Victoria, extend top 20 picks to 4 year contracts, picks 21 to 40 to 3 year contracts, introduce team options for the next 4 years (so if a team wants to keep a player after their rookie contract, the player has to re-sign with their club), scrap restricted free agency, and scrap compensation picks. And introduce a full home and away season. There really isn't any need for the points system to exist. Time we just let it go.
Scrap the draft. And scrap the academies?
New points curve will help a bit, but even though after 1 go we will all see more changes are needed, AFL will adjust it in about 2030.
So the premier got access to a top 2 talent. Some rated #1.
And the wooden spooner in 2023 got Harley Reid.
Well the system is half working properly.
Was that by giving north pick 3 as compo so eagles trade 1 + something for 2,3?The irony is the AFL had zero problems with (arguably) the best player in the draft going to the (northen) premiers.
But just 12 months earlier they (behind the scenes) were trying to manipulate a scenario where Harley didn't go to the team that finished dead last
It doesn't take a genius to connect those dots

Why would you scrap the Academies? They're good for jnr pathways into AFL, particularly in remote areas. And scrap the academies?

Same NRL thats had the Penrith Panthers win the Premiership the last 4 seasons?Scrap the draft.
NRL shows its just not needed
They have lost players over the last 4 seasons constantly and done a brilliant job in replacing them. Its the best performance we have seen from a sporting club in our lifetimes and they didnt get any favours from the NRL to achieve it.Same NRL thats had the Penrith Panthers win the Premiership the last 4 seasons?
2021/2022/2023/2024
Yep, perfect example of equity there...
I love the entitled defend the entitlement.I’d happily get rid of all academies, father sons, 5 of the teams in Victoria, extend top 20 picks to 4 year contracts, picks 21 to 40 to 3 year contracts, introduce team options for the next 4 years (so if a team wants to keep a player after their rookie contract, the player has to re-sign with their club), scrap restricted free agency, and scrap compensation picks. But that’s just me.
Perhaps due to the offer neverthe whole priority picks package was in part (imo) given to North as a 'war chest' to trade with WC for pick 1.
Not to mention some sections of the AFL 'friendly' media constantly regurgitating the 'Harley is staying in Victoria' narrative.
you'd have to be pretty naive to believe there wasn't conversations with WC about this
all designed to pressure WC in trading pick 1..Glad we didn't fall for it
They have a far bigger junior nursery than other clubs. They have lost players over the last 4 seasons constantly and done a brilliant job in replacing them. Its the best performance we have seen from a sporting club in our lifetimes and they didnt get any favours from the NRL to achieve it.
They replaced departing superstars and plugged in what AFL would call delisted fodder in as replacements who have done the job.
They are proof the system works. In a system like this you lose players despite success for salary reasons. They dont stay together for years on end cos no clubs can afford the trade capital to get these players in and for the players it isnt worth leaving one club at 450k to get 550k elsewhere...
Couldn't he agree to sign a 2 year deal for 2027,2028 for say $3.2 million, but if he wants to be traded eagles let him go at end of 2026.
That way if he has serious concussion issues, he would guaranteed that 2027 2028 money.

Because it rewards the good teams as opposed to relies on pure luck...NRL has also only had 3 teams finish on top of the ladder in the last 12 years. AFL have had 9 in that time.
They do have a bigger junior team.... just like you have a Brisbane has a bigger academy then us....Perhaps due to the offer never

You could have the biggest academy in the competition if WC wanted. They do have a bigger junior team.... just like you have a bigger academy then us....
Well no. Your academy is funded by the AFL. You receive 23 mill of AFL funding compared to Eagles 10 mill...You could have the biggest academy in the competition if WC wanted.
Academy funding is not included in the off field soft cap, you’re the biggest club with the most money, go spend it.
Sydney only has the largest academy because they have a sponsor who puts $1m a year in to it.
99% of their kids are never a genuine draft chance. But Sydney keep rolling kids through their academy.
Last I looked, they average 1 draftee every 2 years.
We were talking about Sydney’s academy. Why’d you switch goal posts?Well no. Your academy is funded by the AFL. You receive 23 mill of AFL funding compared to Eagles 10 mill...
They have to make it for non elite as well to disguise its main purpose. Elite A grade talent on the cheap. I think academies should exist, but don't mind if it is a universal rule that you can't match a top 10 bid.You could have the biggest academy in the competition if WC wanted.

The academies wouldn’t work if they were made for just the very elite, potentially draftable kids. They have to make it for non elite as well to disguise its main purpose. Because you support Brisbane. In any case Sydney get 26 mill when we got 10 so that’s not helpingWe were talking about Sydney’s academy. Why’d you switch goal posts?
Edit: Lions have the smallest academy of the four northern teams btw.
Funny how the smaller market teams get more revenue hey.Because you support Brisbane. In any case Sydney get 26 mill when we got 10 so that’s not helping
Equality you mean ? Yeah let’s not have that.Funny how the smaller market teams get more revenue hey.
You “only” get $10m because your team earns more money than any other team, so you’re much more profitable.
Pity we’re not like the nba where they have a profit sharing system, where all club revenue goes in to one big pot, then divided equally amongst all teams.
Wildcats for mine. Its the best performance we have seen from a sporting club in our lifetimes and they didnt get any favours from the NRL to achieve it.
