Speculation Harley Reid [OOC 2026]

Neutral perspective from a supporter of a club that doesn't currently have Harley Reid, nor seems to be actively trying to get Harley Reid:

He's not worth as much as the Eagles fans in here think he's worth. He's not the "most valuable trade asset in AFL history" nor is he "more valuable than when Chris Judd was traded".

Sorry Eagles fans but you're buying into the hype way too much there.

Yes, he's an extremely valuable prospect and trade asset. Yes, if he's traded, it will be for an absolutely premium price. But that "premium price" would be roughly akin to the JHF trade value, which after all was said and done basically boiled down to two high 1st round picks and some lower round picks.
If he wasn't that appealing then why would multiple teams be offering $2,000,000+ per year and 5 to 10 years?

Obviously, that sort of coin for a contracted player will require substantially more than the JHF trade.

Look at what Essendon offered Ben McKay. The amount of an offer is not always an accurate reflection of their worth.

I'm not suggesting Harley Reid isn't a premium trade asset and a potential absolutely elite gun. But I'm saying... Eagles fans need to get slightly more realistic expectations.

Who's offering $2+ mill a year for 10 years?

I've heard those rumours but I've not heard any concrete evidence from a reliable source that any club had considered that kind of an offer.

You are sounding exactly like you were prior to the Baker trade !

We all told you it would be a pick around #15 but you didnt listen'
We all said the eagles would split #3 but you didnt listen

Reid will get 1 pick in the top 5 and another around 10-15
And west coast will accept it
I wouldn’t be using the baker trade as an example of usual trades we folded like a deck of cards and badly minced negotiations. Full credit to Richmond to sticking to there guns there.

However this club is not shrewd when it comes to trading so I think you are correct there

TBH its all going to come down to how happy HR is this year at west coast and how he performs on field and both these things could be connected. If he plays well and is happy to complete his contract that is great for the eagles and longer he stays the more likely he will res sign for another term.

But if he plays an average year and unhappy and decides he wants out then the eagle wont be getting 3 x 1st rounders and likely to be a JHF type trade ( which was pick #2 + F1 that ended up pick #20)
Bombers 2 x 1st rounders feel right if 1 is around 4-5 and the other around 12

If he were to select Richmond which i highly doubt and hope not then i wouldnt be wanting to give up 2 x top 4 picks without getting something back thats for sure
Richmond need another 4-5 top 10 picks in the next 3 years before tassie
Im still wanting Fred & Sharp > Reid

If you wait a year you wont be the only club with the trade capital for him, its likely this year or never for the Bombers.
Pay a fair price or miss out
That is totally irrelevant , If West Coast wait another year then Reid selects a club and the eagles deal with that club and i would highly doubt a Collingwood , Geelong or any team will be giving up 2 top 5 picks and likely best case scenario will be
1 x top 10 and another late pick like the JHF deal at best

If he is leaving or the eagles think he will , ship him off now

hich after all was said and done basically boiled down to two high 1st round picks and some lower round picks.
Not sure how you came up with that scenario

JHF trade was

*
NORTH MELBOURNE
Trade out:
Jason Horne-Francis, pick No.1, 2023 third-round pick (tied to Fremantle)
Trade in: Picks No.2, 3, 40, 43, 2023 future first-round pick (tied to Port Adelaide)

North trade out JHF + pick #1 +2023 3rd rounder
North trade in Pick #2 + #3 +#40 + #43 + #20 which was the F1 tied to port

North trading down from 1 to 2 would wipe out the picks #40 + #43 at the very least
which then makes their pick 2 as already their own so pick #3 + #20 for JHF + F3 tied to freo which was roughly #50
JHF deal was
#3 + #20 for JHF + F3 tied to freo which was roughly #50

Contracts of around ten years will probably have three salary cap rises through them potentially adding another 5 million to the cap, meanwhile your player is already signed.
Essendon and West Coast are the only clubs that don't do contracts with increases. That's how Essendon have a large salary cap space. It's why Essendon will likely offer a higher amount per year than other clubs.

We legit might have a draft hand even better than Richmond's last season if Harley leaves this year and Allen also leaves.

Pick 2, 3 (band 1 for Allen), 6 (Essendons first), 10 (Melbournes first), 14 (Hawks first) plus a couple of seconds and thirds.
Plus AFL priority picks. Some of this goes to Sydney for Chad Warner though

Trust me when I tell you this and feel free to bookmark but the kid is gonski.

I just hope and prey he nominates any club other than the Hawks.

Shame it's the wrong draft year to do it.

You could have pick 1 (us/North), 2 (WC), 3 (Allen compo), 4 (us/North) if we were to trade for him

What North got would be the minimium which was 4 end of first round picks.
Year 1 we got was a future 2nd and future 3rd that we had to trade - we were terrible again the following year and year 2 is when we got the end of 1st round picks.

Your only at year 1.

True.
And if we've learned anything from recent years, some contacts have indexation applied and some don't.

I'm not sure too many contacts these days will omit the indexation given the last few years' increases.

It's always a potential bargaining chip from managers to try and get a bigger contact too.

If Oscar Allen walks, Reid could sign the biggest deal in AFL history with the Eagles and you'd still have a heap of spare cap.

Reid and Allen could both end up and Essendon. I’m sure Oscar could picture himself in a fwd line alongside kako and caddy and potentially see himself as Merrett successor.
Essendon has a plenty of cap space and could match any opposition offers.

Or Richmond, alongside Lalor and Lynch
