Apologies for the random bump but I was watching one of Jen's training videos and saw Harry in there and it made me wonder what the deal is with him?

For those watching the VFL more closely than I, is he progressing?

It seems odd to me that our first pick in last year's draft I don't think has even been an emergency (I stand to be corrected here) let alone get a game? Yet TJ has already achieved both.

I'm aware he had his finger injury but that was a while back now.
Pick 25 in the end so let’s not act like he’s a top 5 pick. Perhaps would be better to look at the top 30 and see how many have played

nah, pick #25 is fine and so are the rest of the national draft spots.

just need a team that's above average at talent iD!

Did I act like he’s a Top 5 pick?

I was just wondering how he was progressing and found it odd the player who was picked after him in a position that we don’t have injuries in has managed to progress further

We need him to make it, I'm quite bullish about his future with the Pies.

You don't draft for Year 1 - we used SSP for that.

Players taken in the draft can and do contribute year 1 (clearly, less so tall KP /ruck types) ..and into the future. This concept of draft ‘lottery’ is the biggest dross I’ve ever read.

I know they do, but the success or failure of a draft selection isn't about year 1. Other than a few who look like clear hits - the result of the rest are still unknown.

"draft lottery" is just because a high percentage don't have sustained careers - and there is a fair bit of luck involved as clubs are predicting the future physical, mental and emotional development of teenagers.

“luck” also involved in assessing current skill-set / physical attributes /ability to play the game today as predictors of potential future state.

point is, it’s NOT just ‘uncontrollable’ happenstance /luck, so our talent ID team should be best-in-class at focusing on the non ‘luck’ part

We've had a shit run at the draft recently and I'm not bullish about any of our VFL kids.

But luck isn't just about the development of the player you pick, it's also about who falls to you. At the stage of the draft that we usually pick, you could have the best ordered draft board in the country and still end up with misses. Whilst someone picking after you could snag a gun with a worse ordered draft board.

Dekka as head of recruiting has survived multiple changes in all other roles in the club. The club would have access to all our draft boards and be able to assess the recruiting department's work much more effectively than us. Or in other words, who knows if Dekka has become shit or whether we've just been unlucky.

I often think of Swanny being picked at 58 in the 2001 draft. It took him 5 years to consistently get a spot in the senior side.
Not making any comparisons between he and Harry at all, but I reckon we could afford to have more patience with him ;)
