Draft Profile Harry McKay and Ben McKay

Who taught the boys to kick? At least Harry bad kicking can be hidden with a good goal routine..
Feel like Ben doesn't want the pill in his hands which isn't great for a high pick

We made a prelim - we never had a shot at a player that went 10.
Clubs can trade you know.
The pick Carlton got to draft Harry McKay was from a trade they did.
SOS traded Lachie Henderson to Cats. Got Cats first round pick and then on traded it to GWS with some later picks to get their first round pick plus back up depth players like Plowman and Phillips.

The pick we got Charlie Curnow from on draft night was via a trade with Dogs.
The pick we got David Cuningham from on draft night was from Richmond for Yarran.

We had identical twins in High School. One got drafted by the Doggies. One didn't even play for the Chargers.

Ive got identical twin boys. One is a nutcase and one is placid and cautious about everything. But if they we both similar as juniors, Ben would probably start having some questions in his mind.

I've seen little of Ben McKay but remember around draft time he and Harry were considered late 1st/early 2nd rounders with Harry picked to be drafted ahead of Ben.

North fans, has he looked capable as a forward, does he have similar contest marking ability? How is he progressing as a defender, do you forsee him developing up back before switching forward? Cheers

Ben was always expected to take a bit longer. IIRC he dropped out of the Gippsland Power side to pursue music for a little while, then saw how Harry was going and got back into footy. I would be a little concerned about North's development of talls though, with the exception of Ben Brown who was a mature age recruit, it's been a long while since NM had a tall prospect firing early in their career. Still waiting on Sam Durdin to produce anything. Robbie Tarrant took a while too from memory.

Tarrant's issue was always injuries. He's only played 120-odd games.

Looked a star as a forward early on, couldn't get on the park for years, then moved back due to having Petrie / Waite / Brown ahead of him.

Harry's exploded this year and is looking really, really good.
Leading the comp for contested marks by a mile.

Unfortunately for North, Ben hasn't shown anything at all so far and is looking like a possible bust.

They haven't got anything out of Durdin or McKay when they should be integral parts of the team by now.

Carlton should look to reunite Ben & Harry , With Norths inability to develop players having ben at the same club as harry might be a blessing and could be a bargain for the blues in a year or 2.

Key defenders we have. Between Jones, Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman, Macreadie and Goddard we're pretty set. Not a priority.

Key forwards we're looking good on too now that both Harry McKay and Curnow have come good. McGovern gives us a third tall.

We really need a gun small forward/ half forward, and an experienced mid to help out Cripps (while Walsh, Dow, SPS, Fisher, Setterfield etc continue to develop), plus a long term replacement for Kruezer in the ruck.

The boys also have a preference to not play for the same side.

The McKay twins have yet to play a competitive game against each other but, after sharing a bedroom for 14 years and spending hours almost every day battling in the back yard, they want that chance.

“It would be better if we were at separate clubs,” Harry said.

“We’d grow and develop better away from each other,” Ben added. “And (when we play against each other) there’d be plenty of banter.”

Not to mention Ben Silvagni as another developing KPD and Pat Kerr up forward. Definitely well stocked for talls with potential.

Jones won't last forever, Curnow's best position is still unknown and McGovern hasn't exactly set the world on fire; you have to balance needs with what's available.

But Ben wouldn't get a game ahead any of the blokes you mentioned, not at least for a couple of seasons. It wouldn't be fair to bring in a bloke that you can't give any opportunities to. Goddard and Kerr would be ahead of him in the depth department, and even BSOS is showing signs in the twos.

If Ben McKay moved on from North it would be better to go somewhere like Collingwood; they develop their players well and have a need for KPD depth.

Be interested as 2 year rookie then gradually upgrade to back up key tall

Ben didn't drop out to pursue music.. the boys were not really on the radar for Power until Leigh Brown saw them at Warragul and both boys got a late call up. Neither of them really worked that hard in Power squad (Ben especially) and Ben left early on as he wasn't interested in the commitment required, was more interested in hanging out with mates and playing playstation (seriously, playstation not music). It wasn't until Harry had been doing well after a few games at the Power that Gippsland contacted Ben and said a few AFL clubs were interested in seeing him play for them and there was a real possibility he'd be picked up. He came in and played a few good games down back and showed some real promise and realised he was going to be picked up and then seemed to click for him really late. Both boys were very close to the cut off age for the draft and were only a few days off being drafted the following year so they're a bit younger than most in their draft class and probably a bit more immature, there's still hope for Ben IMO but just depends whether the attitude that's followed him into the AFL is the one from early on with Gippsland Power or the attitude he seemed to have once he switched on to the fact he may have an AFL career fall in his lap.

I think Harry has the potential to be a genuine star, has all the tools and has shown it this year. If it all goes right, I think he'll be a better player than Curnow.

Yep the Blues are the bench mark for developing talent. All those years finishing higher than us on the ladder with worse draft picks........

Clearly they are better at development with players like Curnow,Cripps,McKay,Fisher,Dow,SPS all showing more than North recruits
Dow is doing better than LDU and Harry better than Ben

Notice norths development and recruiting is being questioned by the media also now , Looks like i beat them to the punch
Which of your recruits have been developed to the standard of the players mentioned above

The ladder is the source of truth and its been 5 years since they finished higher than us wih much better draft picks. In what way is Dow outperforming LDU this year?

But hey facts go against your trolling. Its clear your understanding of the game is limited.

The Ladder ??? Who is talking about the ladder
This entire thread is about Ben McKay and Harry McKay and its about North Melbourne's inability to develop the player which has been questioned
Are you happy with your clubs recruiting/development ?

Now lets get to your 2nd Question regarding Dow , Even blind freddy would take Dow over LDU now and the difference between the 2 players are visible
and even though LDU was considered a ready to go plug and play midfielder during draft time he has regressed whilst at North Melbourne and struggling to get a game at the Roo's even with the terrible performances your team has displayed

Rather than constantly ranting about trolling (which tere clearly isnt and a genuine question has been asked) Maybe you try to answer the question i asked of you.

Are you happy with your teams recruiting and development of the younger players and which of your draftee's have developed to the stage where the Carlton younger players i have mentioned in the prior post

Pick 10 is better than pick 21. Im' shocked to be posting this.

It would be up to him and his manager. At any rate, sometimes beggars can't be choosers.

Again .................. Deflection

Ill take that as you agreeing that your recruiting and development has been terrible and none of your drafted players are anywhere near Carlton's kids

Nowhere near as good as the Blues - that's why we won 10 games in 2018 and the Blues won 2. Development and recruitment.

Dude, to be fair weve spent the past 3 years gutting the list and drafting kids. Not sure what your point is re last year.

If you want to be critical of our development and recruiting, give it a few years so the kids we recruited 2016-18 can... you know... develop.
