Has don pyke got a few tricks inthe bag for finals.

Has he held back certain things? Will he unleash a bag full of tricks in september?

No. This was a theory that was thrown up when we kept getting destroyed by Geelong, and after losing three times in a row to the same opposition tactics, was ultimately proven false.

He likes to tinker at times but he certainly doesn't have some magic plan waiting to be unleashed in finals.

And yet this year we beat Geelong in the second game. After changing a few things.

Like players, coaches grow into the job and learn new methods to win games.

2016 was his first year in the job.

He has been a more mature coach this year.

Don't think he needs something else, our best is good enough. It does require around 20 contributors rather than the 16 or so we had tonight.

We've shown the last month or so we are capable of playing finals type footy but there's still a question mark over consistency against the best teams.

Not much the coach can do from here, unless we throw Keath forward in a GF

I dont think he held anything back, what he has done is tinkered with a few things that may pay off down the track. Not sure if Keath plays on Buddy if Talia is fit. Though Talia was on Buddy at times it was mostly Keath.

There will be no magical debut either this year. As bad average as CC has been the last few weeks he will continue to be selected. We may see Talia and Walker rested this week but I cant see to much difference. Maybe tighten up on Sydneys spare man back. Like the Geelong style hopefully its fixed quicker

Goal kicking aside, I dont think he'll hand lessons to defenders, who have only played a couple of games , to Buddy in a final.
I hope it pays a reward down the track. He was tinkering around the edges and challenging players. Heck, he even had Mackay playing inside mid a couple of times.

I think Pyke has improved tactically, but if there's one thing I want to see from him, it's that he doesn't have a best 22 set in stone that he refuses to change unless forced to by injury, regardless of form.

Obviously we don't need to make wholesale changes, but we can't keep carrying someone like Cameron just because of his name.

If someone like Gallucci, Seedsman, Menzel or possibly Milera has a great game, then they need to come in for him, even if they aren't necessarily better than Cameron long term.

I hope so. Can't keep losing to the same teams year in year out.
we need to believe we can roll the swans and cats because they are the biggest threats to us and ones we'll most likely play at the pointy end and most likely choke against. Need to bring something to beat them. Need confidence we can beat them

His 'changing a few things' is exactly what this board had been screaming neeeded to happen for 2 years.

He doesn't have tricks.

a good trick would be to make the right calls at the proper time, instead of waiting for another 3/4/5 goals to be conceded before making the move.
Coaches do say momentum is incredibly hard to stop these days. Players train certain gameplans and are so structured it's often quarter time before they can adjust.

That's not to say we shouldn't adapt faster, but the reality isn't as clear cut.

No, but he has the ability to change momentum and get it back in our favour

We were getting smashed in the first quarter and a half yesterday and dominated the rest of the game. The effort was there, but the Swans were super fast and super clean with the ball. We then tweaked some things, the players (ours) got less fumbly and we took the game on morte

What cost us in the end was:

1. Shit goal kicking
2. Ratkins turn over under zero pressure which resulted in the Papley goal to put them up
3. Our start where Sydney were just too good. We weren't horrible, they were just far too good at the contest. But that can't happen in a final if we meet them

The challenge for Don now is if we come against Sydney, how do we avoid them getting out to an early lead. If we keep that to a 20 point lead and not 29, we win last night

He tinkers with a few things, but no real change.
I would expect:
  • Hopefully instead of allowing the spare opposition men in our forward line for half a game he just shuts that shit down immediately. We are much more effective with that structure.
  • As per the Geelong game, if he can get the players to show up on the angry pills and play right there on the edge, that brings a lot. We were a bit timid here, with not much to lose v Sydney. Cue in the rack already.

Modern coaching is about systems and method.

Few coaches now have a "bag of tricks".

Even the greatest coach of this era was baffled when Danger played up forward against the Hawks. Clarko had no answer for it.

And that change was not a coaching move. I believe it was a suggestion by Danger as he wanted to keep playing. Chris Scott did not suggest it.

The days of throwing a guy like Ellen up forward to catch another team unaware are done. Blighty even said last night when asked about the modern game at the ground how the modern game is about team defence. Hence it is the system and method that a coach will stick by.

Having said that we have seen some flexibility with the way we use Otten. It that would still be inbuilt into the plan.

We lead the league in several critical stats and we are up the top end in all the others. We have the game to beat anyone. Frankly, we won everything last night just didn't put the score on the board. We beat ourselves with poor finishing. I don't even think Sydney are the best team we've played. If we kick the goals, we win that game. We don't need any tricks, we just need to put it all together on game days. Don't fear anyone if we perform. We absolutely can win the flag.

Gee, that sounds very Don Pyke after rd 11

'Our best is good enough' - our best at training is irrelevant. Your style needs to adapt depending on the circumstances.

Bit late in the season for new tricks. The template is there, it's all mindset from here on in*. Bring the heat early, or else!

*Not really counting the WCE game, it's a nothing game for us.

Except if we lose the last 2 then it counts
