Has Eade been there too long?

With every pathetic performance, the answer will continue to be yes.

Football is cut throat, coaches rarely receive the luxury of staying on for a
rebuild after nearly tasting success.

Eade has proved that the game is past him by have two 1st gamers as substitutes coming on at 3/4 time in close games (Wallis, Skinner). If a 1st gamer is not good enough to be in the starting 21 then they should be back playing at Williamstown. That is just poor coaching. It also calls the whole match committee in question.

Someone like Addison, Moles, Hill who aren't great - but versatile, have reasonable pace and can have an impact are ideal substitute players, or veterans like Gia, Hargrave or Hahn (Yes, I understand Hahn is a rookie, and Hargrave is injured, i'm just throwing up names).

tbh he's a good coach, but with us he went a bit stale and done enough to keep his job for about 3 years or so until he left in 2002. I feel he is going the same way at the Bulldogs imo, although thats a good stat that DogBite brought up. But the Bulldogs have been a bit unlucky, i reckon the list is good enough for a flag, but they just got done by a team that's a little bit better in the last couple of years, but certainly where we caught the comp at a good time for our flag, maybe the same needs to happen for you lot to a degree. But its a marathon, not a sprint. I'd wait until seasons end to assess where you lot are. Still a chance for top 4 (with St Kilda going backwards and Hawks showing indifferent form) should things start to click and you keep all your players fit. Don't lose hope. :)

Sadly i think he has, the team just does not seem to play for him any more.

They should be playing at very least to justify the large amounts of money our debt laden club pays them. Or for the jumper, the club, the team.

Seriously we need to get a new team not a coach if thats the case.

I tend to agree with this. The fact is that we have a number of players on the decline, a group of marginal performers who are not as good as we thought they were, and a big group of developing players who are not yet (and may never be) good regular players.
Probably Eade did the best he could with the list as it was and now finds himself in charge of an uncohesive mish mash of different types as above.

Of course, none of this will save him if we bomb out this year and the future fortunes of the club will be an enormous challenge for his successor.

What do you mean, have a look at the Bombers same team as last year new coach new attitude, they now play for the coach as well for the jumper.

Too many players waiting for some one else to do the work, will not work for each other at all.

good point, the coach can only do so much

Well that said, our list is shit then, overrated by anyone thats rate them.

At the moment we are 2 wins and 4 losses. I am very despondent. We are playing without passion and energy. We are going through the motions. The flare we had a few seasons ago has gone.
Over the next 5 weeks we play Richmond (on the up), West Coast (in Perth and we are likely to lose), Hawthorn (Playing much better than us), Geelong (at Skilled Stadium-enough said) and St Kilda ( some chance, but given past performances, unlikely).
This means after Round 12, where we will have played 11 games our record could easily be 2 wins and 9 losses.
No chance of Finals.
Eade may be even be gone at the half way mark and replaced by an interim coach - I don't know who. I can't see how we could survive this.
We will need to go after Malthouse or Roos or even Leigh Matthews for next year and we will have to spend more on the football department.
The only way for all this not to happen is to at least beat Richmond, West Coast and St Kilda. A win against Hawthorn or Geelong would be a real bonus.
I hope we can do it.

Our list is at a bit of a cross roads, we are blooding probably more players than we have in the past. Question is should it be Eade having the responsibility for what will be a rebuild over the next 3 years ? Is he the best man to develop a new young list ?

It will not be Matthews or Malthouse, the alternative is probably a first year coach like Cameron I would think

The Pies nearly gave Malthouse the flick when they crashed for a bit after their back to back Grand Final appearances. Think they're pretty glad they didn't.

Again, the club shouldn't make a rash decision about it. He could be as good a bloke as any to be in charge of rebuilding.

If performances keep up like this, one of two things will have to happen. It's the nature of the industry.

1. Eade goes (I don't think this is smart)
2. We go the full re-build. Hudson, Hall are gone. Everyone over 28 put on notice and a few tough calls made at season's end. EG: Cross traded (Wallis/Libba replacements), Shaggy/Gilbee gone (Wood replacement), etc etc.

The next month or so will be vital. If we only have a handful of wins at halfway, then the club needs to chose it's direction and go with it.

FWIW, I still think we'll make the 8. Everyone is knocking everyone off this year. Will be very tight going into the final few rounds I believe. The only saving grace for us is, although we've lost the last 2, they've been close losses. Percentage will be important IMO.

I don't think we will make the 8 and before anyone slaps the "the season is still only 7 rounds old" statement on me. I am prepared to back it up by saying we have only beaten the two Qld teams who are battling.
While we did beat these teams comfortably on the scoreboard we played terribly in both matches.
Now, not making the 8 is not a major issue in my mind. We are blooding some younger players, we are basically acknowledging that some of our older players are past it and need to be moved on, and we have found our game plan to be a thing of the past.
Hopefully Rocket can finish the season with a bit of a flourish and maybe we can sneak into the 8, if we don't make it then a huge assessment needs to be made by the club on our direction for the future. Trades, delistings and draft choices all need to be assessed carefully and perhaps the speculative picks we have been so keen on in the past needs to be adjusted so as we get the best player available.
Also if a potential father-son is not up to scratch then we should NOT draft him. I am pointing the finger directly at the club here in regard to Ayce Cordy, who i believe will not make it as a senior player. no offence to Ayce but I think the club made a hasty decision in drafting him so high. We should have said no, let St Kilda have him.
If Rocket is prepared to eat humble pie and learn how to use the press, and be ruthless in the preparation of players to create a modern gameplan then he is the right man for the job.
If he wants to continue in the way he is now, we must thank him and not renew his contract.

God help us with that old hasbeen.

Yeah what do we want with a multiple Premiership winning Coach!

Let's keep our overrated coach who has acheived nothing substantial in the 14 years he has coached. He is taking our team backwards as he did to Sydney where he lost the players. The Swans got rid of him took a punt on Paul Roos & won a flag!
Leon Cameron,Roos & Matthews anyone but Eade is the way to go!

Footy Classified (don't usually watch this) just did their 'good call bad call' thing suggesting Leon Cameron as next head coach of the Bulldogs as a 'good call' - mentioned that it was a good thing that he is spending a year at the Hawks now - different coaching environment - and well placed should a tough decision be made on Eade.

Re: is eade been there too long?

agree with yr comments, i know we have done well too with some picks, especially with the likes of morris and boyd etc, but its critical for us in the future to get better with our pics ( They are like gold ) - getting the pics right is the key to challenging for the flag, and as i said above, we have stuffed up too many if you ask me, and we need to put more resources into getting a few more high quality scouts that know what they are doing

During that period we had Clayton and Ambrogio as our recruitment specialists. They are two of the best going around. Who would you have replaced them with?...You?!

I really hope that when it becomes time to replace Eade it's not Cameron who is the replacement. From my limited exposure to him he falls a mile short of what I believe a coach needs to be.

Roos? What an irony that would be. Didn't he turn the Swans around almost instantly after Rocket got sacked from Sydney? Would not be a bad choice though- he's agreat bloke and has agreat footy brain. The other guy they should call is Chris Grant- listening to him on 774 is a revelation.
