Has Malthouse Been A Failure?

I know we like to say that here but the same pundits who are giving Malthouse a free pass for the year generally rate Carlton's list pretty highly. Its only on here that Judd isn't still a superstar and Gibbs is soft etc. This kind of absurd reductionism doesn't happen outside this place so why aren't they being harder on Malthouse?
Unlike Freo or Ross Lyon, Malthouse does know how to win a flag. Who are the pundits you mentioned? Their list is poor.
Are you telling me Armfield, Curnow, Lucas, White, Cachia, McLean & Robinson are gun midfielders? Please.

Like I suspected it was too much to expect an intelligent discussion in this place full of cliche regurgitating morons. thanks for confirming that yet again.

I agree this forum is just that. But honestly which of those players I mentioned would you have at Freo? And who would you give up for them? Your list is miles ahead of Carltons and it's mainly Collingwood fans on here stirring the pot about Malthouse.

Just because I'm pedantic.

Give him time, there are a few weaknesses in Carltons side that will take a few years to fix.
You have to be kidding.

Carlton was primed for this year. That's why Ratten was pissed off losing the job and why Malthouse wanted it. It's been said their list had games and age that was a close match for Geelong 2007 and this was going to be their year. Lets say there has to be some luck actually winning the flag, but they had to finish top 4. More teams have had worse injury lists. Carlton had to be deep into the finals this year or Malthouse is a failed idea.

Only a true idiot would declare Mick Malthouse a failure after half a season. He wasn't able to make any decisions about the list last off-season due to the Judd deal putting cap pressure on the Blues, and his only way of making an impact so far has been on the field, where Mick is clearly changing things. The fact is we all overrated their list on the back of one finals win. They don't have the list as it stands to make an impact come September.

Whether his game plan will work if the Blues get back to being a flag threat, that's for another day..

Give him an off-season to filter the good from the bad. Carlton also has cap room to go after a biggish fish, and some players that can help win a flag. Mick will not touch anyone that cannot help him win a flag.

o_O Sometimes I wonder if people actually believe what they write. And then I'm so thankful that if they really do, that I've been blessed with mental faculties unlike theirs.

I can agree that if Malthouse doesn't get the team into finals, then the season is a failed season in and of itself, without doubt. Going deep into finals in his first year, yeah-nah, that's stretching it a little IMO. And for the very idea of recruiting Mathouse to Carlton to have failed on the back of one season. Well, talk about a prissy overreaction.

if Carlton can afford him for 5-10 years then he will win them a premiership, wont be many of the current players playing in it tho ;)

So you are not in the finals and that's sort of ok. That means Carlton is rebuilding. yes?

Well hes been saying the losses have been closer than last year and thats sort of ok, so at least he's being consistent.

No doubt he will count last nights game as a close loss too. It was only three and a bit goals.
I thought the reason they didn't make the finals last year was because they had a massive lot of outs throughout the season. Much more than this year.

Compared to Ross Lyon @ Freo - Yes
Outside of that i dont know. what did supporters expect this year? A flag, finals, more wins that last year?

As Timmy has already shown, to this point of the season, that's not really true.
Particularly when you include Mitch Robinson in that injury list.
