Because every team would struggle without their star players.relevance?
this is the carlton thread
But Carlton have had all their star players for the last 3 years, and have failed to even contend for a flag, let alone win one.Because every team would struggle without their star players.
Brisbane winning the flag without Neale and Andrews?
By ur bizarre definitions maybeBut Carlton have had all their star players for the last 3 years, and have failed to even contend for a flag, let alone win one.
Yes, it is indeed bizarre that someone would only consider a team a premiership contender if they actually genuinely contend for a premiership.By ur bizarre definitions maybe
Collingwood has a 75% win rate in games without these players under McRaeHow would the Pies go without Moore and N.Daicos atm?
And whats our win rate under Voss without Cripps?Collingwood has a 75% win rate in games without these players under McRae
Tell us more about this statement, remembering it's AFL not NBA?I see Carlton as similar as they have the stars in every area of the ground like we had.
Cripps has missed 3 games in 3 years under Voss (None of them finals), and Carlton have won 2 of them. One being against 2023 West Coast. And whats our win rate under Voss without Cripps?

Not sure what your point is?
Are you suggesting Carlton have been a premiership contender in recent years (they haven't), and/or they are a premiership contender in 2025 (time will tell who contends for the premiership). Most reasonable and logical people would consider Carlton a premiership contender, and recent results suggest they meet the criteria for consideration.
Be the premiership favourite at some point in the home and away season? ✔✔✔
Make finals? ✔✔
Win a final? ✔✔
All Australian players on the list? ✔✔✔✔✔✔✔
Coleman medals won by current players? ✔✔✔
Brownlow Medals won by current players? ✔✔
But you are neither reasonable nor logical, so I look forward to being amused by your response that invents some other criteria to support your fantasy narrative.

As it stands, Carlton haven't contended for the premiership for a quarter of a century.

Interesting comparison. Dusty won Richmond's BnF in 2016 and he was 25 years old at the time. Rance finished second and was 27 years old. Cotchin finished third and was 26 years old. All three in their prime and still several years before they hit their 30s.The Richmond list had peaked and was over after 2016. I see Carlton as similar as they have the stars in every area of the ground like we had. Just takes a while for a club coming from the bottom to work out the right pieces around them. They can challenge for the next 4 or so years.
Cripps - 29Interesting comparison. Dusty won Richmond's BnF in 2016 and he was 25 years old at the time. Rance finished second and was 27 years old. Cotchin finished third and was 26 years old. All three in their prime and still several years before they hit their 30s.
Cripps won Carlton's BnF this year and he's about to turn 30. Nic Newman finished second and he's turning 32 in January. Sam Walsh finished third and he's 24. With the exception of Walsh, it's pretty evident that Carlton's list is older than Richmond's was in 2016 when you compare their best players.
No.Can I infer that your criteria for contending for a premiership is making the grand final?
No.
See the thing is, when your team gets to the pointy end as often as mine does, it's pretty easy to decipher whether or not they legitimately contended for a premiership.
For example, in 2007, my team finished 5th, and progressed to lose the Preliminary Final by 5 points to the team that won the premiership by nearly 20 goals. Collingwood therefore contended in 2007.
In 2009, Collingwood finished top 4, but were comfortably beaten by the two teams who were by far the best teams in the competition that year in their Qualifying and Preliminary Finals. We therefore failed to contended in 2009.
If you ever get to see your team make it to the pointy end, you might find yourself in an informed position to be able to judge whether or not they genuinely contended for the flag. Instead of sitting here in November and saying 'Carlton want for nothing, and are therefore genuine premiership contenders in 2025'.
Because there are about a dozen teams who would be entering 2025 hoping to be a premiership contender, but in any given year, we only see between 1 and 5 teams actually genuinely contend for the premiership.
