mostly because of the fans....

Don't really care for them one way or another... West Coast, Hawthorn and Sydney on the other hand though...

It's really only a Victorian thing. I never really thought about them one way or the other throughout most of the 90's, they were pretty much irrelevant. It wasn't until the Footy Show started and Eddie was on TV every week telling us all how much everyone else hates Collingwood that I even knew it was a thing.

I don't think they are as disliked as we are led to believe. I think it's a barrow they push themselves - that whole "us against them" crap. There are quite a few teams that I personally would put ahead of them.

Growing up in WA, the media and shows like The Footy Show, definitely painted a picture that all Pies supporters were feral scum from a gutter trash suburb.

After moving to Melbourne I soon learnt that Collingwood is in fact not cheap, their fans are about as passionate as they come and have enjoyed the banter at games between their supporters and ours.

The other thing I've learned since moving here is that Carlton supporters are the absolute worst.

I don't really hate Collingwood, just the footy fascist dickhead Eddie Maguire.

Some of the people who I talk to the most in real life are Magpie supporters, so it helps me feel somewhat indifferent to the club and their supporters. :p

Collingwood are like wrestling villians; they play up the hatred and eddie does it too. They want yo be hated as it means more viewers and money. Perfect for casual viewers who can bandwagon.

I would say that carlton is more hated in more devoted football fans eyes as well as essendon.

It's not a hatred for Collingwood, more their fans. They've got some diehard fans which you naturally hate, but also they've got the fans that know very little about the game but just support Collingwod.

On the whole:
Carlton (yep..), Richmond and St Kilda supporters are shocking - 3-way tie (save for WCE fans on a hot Sunday arvo at Subi :p)
Geelong fans are the best. I have never encountered a fan worthy of a figure four leg lock, even when they were kicking everyone's ass.

Eddie McGuire will go down as one of the greatest presidents in AFL/VFL history and he ought to have the respect of every football fan. Great salesman for the club, transformed it into the Man Utd (at least off-field) like they promised and been darn competitive on-field. Both the 1990 and 2010 GF wins were painful because their loyal fans are the arguably the most passionate out there AND the people that you assumed had little interest in football wore Collingwood scarves for a whole week carrying on like pork chops despite knowing nothing beyond Didak, Daisy and Swanny. These are the kinds of people that were already insufferable sans the Magpies conch. Their true fans are terrific and know their football. But much like when the Tigers get their tails up, their bandwagoners are awful.

The hatred stems from the huge supporter base, Viccy Park and the fact they won 12 flags in 60 years. The 'Collywobbles' that ensued gave everyone a common enemy because of that aforementioned flag strike rate.

It's football, there is no rational reason.

It turns a lot of highly intelligent people into ****ing savages...

For the record, I don't hate Collingwood. Dislike them just the same as every other team on my boo list.

Essendon and St Kilda on the other hand...if I woke up tomorrow and both clubs had completely burnt to the ground I would not bat an eyelid.

Whatever...I'm sure the feeling is mutual from many of them...

You cannot fault most if not all the Collingwood teams over the years in terms of how they have played the game.

This is one area where we (Carlton) are to a certain extent brothers with the Magpies.

The two teams on the evil side of things have been Hawthorn and Essendon.

These are two team cultures where 'whatever it takes' has been the mantra for decades. Both willing to smash the spirit of the game for flags.

Tell me more about Hawthorn "smashing the spirit of the game" :D.

Can anyone explain to me the logical reason for all the Collingwood hatred? My question harks back to the 2010 season when they won the flag and some people I know said that they wanted anyone but Collingwood to win. I thought (despite being an ardent Bombers fan) that they had been the best team that season and deserved to win the flag. Why the hatred, is it based on any logic or just the fact that they are Collingwood?

Supporters

Collingwood supporters are often stereotyped as 'bogans', poorly educated and described as being toothless, among other things.[26] This has caused the supporters of many clubs, especially Melbourne-based ones, to have a disliking for the club,[27][28] in addition to the above more specific rivalries, however it could be argued these supporters are continuing the sectarian hatreds that characterised Australian society during Collingwood's main period of success in the 1920s and 30's.[29] Collingwood supporters have also been involved in many of the most highly publicised incidents of racial vilification in the history of the AFL. A report published by the Australian Human Rights Commission found that racial vilification was prevalent in all crowds and was not confined to any one AFL venue, but also singled out Collingwood's home ground of Victoria Park as the worst for racial abuse of Aboriginal players in the past.[30]Collingwood spectators' racial taunting of indigenous players Nicky Winmar and Adam Goodes are seen as landmarks in the history of racism in the AFL,[31] and Michael Long's report of vilification by Collingwood ruckman Damian Monkhorst lead directly to the establishment of the AFL's racial vilification regulations.

I'd say it was a combination of the club being extremely strong and their supporters being extremely feral for a very large proportion of the 20th century. collngwood and its district wasn't always a poncy hipster enclave. They were mean streets and Victoria Park was baptism of fire for opposition players and supporters in the VFL.

Recent generations read and hear about the hatred of Collingwood, so just continue to do so for no real rational reason......a bit like how every club's supporter group decides to boo Adam Goodes. One mob does it, so every one else does it.

Collingwood fans are the most feral, toothless, ugly, arrogant, drunk and filthy of all the clubs in Melbourne.

Players like Pendlebury, Swan etc have definitely improved the image of the club in many eyes, but their fans are still the scumiest of scum.

As a Carlton supporter I do not hate Collingwood. I respect them as worthy foes.

Collingwood have an amazing history of giving themselves a chance, year after year.

Yes, the strike rate has not been flash hot but the fact they keep presenting all the time over decades and decades deserves some praise.

The other thing about Collingwood teams is the spirit of how the game is played.

Collingwood, of course they are the enemy, begrudging respect though.

Hawthorn and Essendon. Nothing but contempt.

Yes rookie please explain how Hawthorn has this 'whatever it takes' mantra you so believe!
Essendon yes I agree, they even had it as their slogan.
So please explain also how we've tried to smash the spirit of the game as well.
All I seem to recall is smashing your side 13 times in a row since 2005!
