These threads always make interesting reading in hindsight. Last season there was so much talk of us needing some height and size through the midfield, which was our weakest line by far.

Three rounds into 2023 and we've now got a midfield with a core of Worpel (186cm), Newc (187cm), Mackenzie (188cm), Day (191cm) and Nash (197cm) which lacks some cohesion but is clearly a much improved clearance machine. Only one of those were outside acquisitions in this off season.

Now the focus is on KPP. I'm going to make an early prediction that Lewis' return to the side will spark better performances all around and we'll have some other dire gap needing filling. Gorilla defender maybe.
The club took the risk in moving players on and we’ve had a number of players step up to fill the void.

The question is who on our list currently will step up and fill the KPP spots. Lewis will help when he gets back. Rama showing positive signs so far and Blanck having a bit of a down year but has shown promise defensively. If these guys step up our list looks a lot better for the long term.

It’s up to our youth now.

Its not outlandish to suggest that a 25yo with previous experience at AFL level has shown more exposed form than a 20yo with 1 season under his belt. It's the perceived ceiling that's a strange one to me but time will tell.
Not talking about exposed form, more about talent.

We probably have one of the more even and deepest lists in the AFL. Going to be tough to cut players given nearly everyone has shown promising signs.

Kosi, Mitchell, Long and Serong probably the most in the gun. All will need to perform well in the back half of the year.

It’s about who can take that next step and be part of the team that will drive us up the ladder.

O'Hara is pretty likely you'd think unless there's no-one else in the pipeline to take his extra Cat B spot. Else if no better options, he still has that third year off list he could remain.

Haven't seen him on the field this year yet, have we?

e.g. If we want to keep Bennetts, we may need Fionn's spot for Tew Jiath or another promising NGA?

It’s a real conundrum in that we can be describes as ‘cutting too deep’

[note added some minor edits to clarify points]

Our list looks pretty unbalanced - very short of talls but a lot of hbf types and lots of recent investment in small forwards. Also a growing group of tall mids.

Chad’s at risk because Breust is contracted for 2024, Moore is a lock and we need space for brockman and butler + JOs/Bennets just drafted and MacDonald growing into hff/mid role.

Expect we’ll draft or acquire some talls this year. Hopefully McCabe is a gun and if we don’t finish bottom a tall is a high chance to be our first pick. Kosi seems on outer, Blanck has been poor (early days though), jeka on thin ice and unclear if DGB will be a 3rd tall or KPD (or make it). Ramsden the hope. But hard to see us chopping too many talls given would leave us even more thin.

The hbfs are interesting. Bramble and seamus likely at risk but possibly even impey as well (albeit unlikely this year but possibly in 2024) . I have morris in a slightly different group as he can actually defend / play Hardwick role - but he still would want to get games this year.

Can’t see serong at risk at all - given he got given games in first year expect club rates him a lot. Only really competing with Greene - who’s probably more a risk if doesn’t perform this year.

[edited to clarify] Of our mids would Nash, worpel, stephens, Hurstwaite, long appear likely fighting for same few spots. Can see someone getting squeezed out - Long probably most at risk to be moved on.

Overall likely to be some tougher list calls this years given no obvious retirements.

Need to try and pinch a gun key forward from another club if we can…
Kosi back to box hill to be trialled as a key defender IMO… has the athleticism and size but no forward craft…
Another gun dynamic mid that can go forward would be great too…

Of our mids would not surprise if one of Nash, worpel, stephens, Hurstwaite, long isn’t on list. Agree Long probably most at risk to be moved on.

He's only played 1 VFL games, in his first year and you wouldn't be surprised if we move him on. Glad someone else is the list manager 😁
Pretty sure Stephens signed for 2 year and they'll be giving him every opportunity too.

Ben McKay is a RFA. I'd play him fwd.
Throw the sink.

Can't see Serong being under the pump. Debuted last year and showed a bit plus we are short on talls.

O'Hara maybe.

Bramble might be on a slippery slope if he gets pushed out of the side and others go past him.

Kosi and Jeka def.

Assuming Lynch remains behind Meek and Reeves, does he seek greener pastures esp with Rama coming through?

Then its down to Wingard and Frost as veterans.

DGB is a watch too in the sense that if he doesnt get games he may request a trade back home.

Whatever changes we make, we desperately need to invest in talls.

My take.

Longs a rookie, but I don’t know if he gets another year with Hustwaite breathing down his neck for the same role.
Can’t see us cutting our big man stocks back to 2 genuine rucks unless Lynch asks for a trade.
Bramble might be in trouble if he can’t make a fist of his game time this year.

I have faith in Mitchell, but he’s a chance to get the chop too.

I think with the shape of our midfield now and with Stephens waiting for opportunity, Worpel would be some sort of chance to be elsewhere next year.
No chance on Worpel leaving

Its going to be fascinating to see how we progress this year and that will largely determine where we are

McKay is the one potential acquisition I have absolutely zero interest in. I don't know why we'd throw the kitchen sink at a failed forward who played 2 years worth of average footy as a defender in a team which conceded the most points against in both of those years. I especially don't understand why we would take that average defender and move him in to the original position he failed at / has never played to a competitive standard at any level.

I wouldn't mind seeing how Kosi would go at BHH playing the same role Nash does for us. That KP size body with athleticism playing a defensive role in the midfield.

It'd be a long shot and I wouldn't even expect it to work. But how many on here ever thought Nash would be suited to that role until it was trialed?

If it works out but he's still not better at it than Nash then at the very least we create some depth or increase his trade value.

I’d be very surprised if Chad could get a three year deal anywhere given his age and injury history.

His best bet from now on will be rolling one year deals that are heavily performance based.
Yeh you are probably right about 3, but I think a team in the window will definitely give him two though.

DGB gettable apparently, according to Twomey and Beveriges podcast where they have to fill space.
Shame they didn’t mention contracted 2024
Interesting which KP get senior games going forward.

Lewis a lock, but fit players now outside the team

Looking at the draft, and assuming that we don't win the Harley Reid Cup, I can only see Archer Reid (202 cms) as a KPP given that Jed Walter is tied to the Gold Academy. I think that in terms of the list, trying to get a free agent KPP might be a couple of years too early. Let's hope that Ramsden or Jeka can come on.

Regarding Chad, perhaps Clarko or GWS may extend a performance based contract. We have had good luck with dealing with North in the past. ;);)

DGB contracted to end of next year. They’re spitballing at this stage.

Lol! Why would a SA team want Morris? As for the list changes we shall see in time.
I can only assume that you've not watched the Port backline at any point this season.
