Jeka & O’Hara are the other players that face the possibility of being delisted.

I wouldn’t be surprised if players like Bramble, Morrison & even Maginness are told to look “elsewhere” as the club start getting games into B.MacDonald & Hustwaite.
Wouldn't make any sense to delist O'Hara. Hawks would have picked him up knowing he wouldn't be showing any signs till at least 2024.

Why are they waiting for the second half to do this?
That makes no sense.

Mitchell isnt a new player to the AFL.

I agree but look how many times AC changed our game plan over a bye to play a different game style after it then before. Why didn’t Clarko just play that new style before the bye because he had time to look, review and work out how to best play it. I think this what coaches will do to Lewis in the second half if he keeps playing as well as he is now and we keep playing as well as we are it’s going to be harder for wins in the second half.

But let’s try him on a wing first.

Jiath to a wing ticks a lot of boxes.
He is very quick.
He has great endurance.
His kicking is good enough.
He works hard to run defensively.
His aerial ability can be a headache for opposing wings.
His moments that lack composure are less damaging higher up the ground.

Imagine Weddle, Impey, Seamus streaming off half-back and a fully fit Jiath/Amon streaming down the wings. Very exciting.

However, some players don't have the IQ to play the wing. That's my big question with CJ. I would give him a full preseason there to find out.

Lewis is definitely not just a "very run straight and mark forward".

If you go to the games you see how hard he works and how crafty he is with his leads, back towards the goal, up at the ball carrier. He also works over his opponents with his endurance and is one of the best contested marks in the comp.

Top 5 this week in distance covered and distance covered at high speed, equal first for tackles I50 which is ridiculous for a key forward.

Yep I’ve said his very very good at what he does just think he struggles if he has body on body contact sometimes falls over also.

I’m very happy with the way his playing don’t get me wrong I’m just saying I think he will find it harder in the second half of the year I may be wrong if I am great that means we are playing really well still.

It’s just my opinion doesn’t mean I’m right.

Nailed it.
Certainly not against the idea, but a lot of posters see the physical attributes you opened with & just assume that he can play wing, whereas I think it's footy IQ which will determine whether or not he'd actually succeed there.

Knowing our side pretty well & having Opposition Analyst(s) on staff, in the chair(s) next to them, why would Ratts & Fages not have thought to quell Lewis' impact BEFORE we play them? Why would they wait until the bye to do so?

We have 1x KPF. In fact, we've had the same 1x KPF for 5+ years. I can't think of a reason as to why opposition coaches would wait until the bye to think that matching up on him is a good idea.

Why didn't they do it after last year's bye & just roll out the same plan this season?

Ok it’s just my opinion he will be part of our next premiership I hope it’s just a opinion that’s it doesn’t mean I’m right and you don’t have to agree with me.

100% agree he'll be part of our next Flag.
I wasn't disagreeing with that part.

How the hell are you confusing a gameplan with how defenders play 1 on 1?

His footy IQ is not good enough IMHO. He just cannot weight a kick correctly and get smothered a lot. Better options would surely exist for a spot on the wing.

I’m not . I’m saying coaches work out how to stop teams over the breaks and we are playing really well.
You quite literally wrote that defenders will play body on body with Lewis in the second half of the year.

What’s stopping them doing that now? And why wouldn’t they be doing it?

Because I think Clubs will review our games over the bye as we win more and play really well on ways to stop us and how did we go at the start of the year without him take him out of the game you stop us kicking goals. Clubs work out how to best teams over breaks a lot harder when games are piling up on top of each other.

Your not going to agree with me and that’s ok it’s my opinion doesn’t have to be your one and it won’t be.

That's a different thing to your judgement on Mitch Lewis. As SYL and Brant said, he's been our #1 key forward and very good when he's on the park for a number of years now. If he was just a lead and mark forward then clubs would already know how to deal with him.

The thing is, he's more than that, and key defenders of the league struggle to contain him. You can't just game plan a defender into being good enough to stop a better player, that's why the best players are always good.

I see where you are going with this.

The thing is Lewis has been in the system for a while now and team have already tried a lot of tactics already and Lewis will know how to overcome them already (which in some circumstances has been playing decoy).

I doubt teams have anything that would not have already been tried before. Best way to stop a KPF is to stop the flow or control the flow to bad positions.

You’re saying that clubs will start to defend Lewis and take his space in the second half of the year, like it’s never occurred to anyone to do it earlier.

It’s nonsense.

As if it's that simple. Hawkins and Mitch Lewis play very similar styles. If it was that easy to take Mitch out of the game, clubs would have figured it out on Hawkins years back.

Ok your right and I’m wrong I’m sorry I don’t want to get a thread ban.

I’ll keep my opinions to myself next time.

It feels like a heresy to say so, but I reckon CJ could have some serious value at the trade table. Right age, right athletic profile and a crowd-puller. Most of our best football this year has been without him so he is not essential to our needs. I would not consider releasing him without the right kind of offer but I am confident he would attract enquiry.
See I see it the opposite. Weddle runs the lines hard then when he needs a rest CJ comes on and does the same. No let up. Makes us very hard to play against as you can't shut 1 player down and hope this works. Throw in Seamus who is a running machine in the vein of what Nock Daicos does and we are building a very strong band of line breakers. It's following what the Pies are doing but we perhaps end up with more of them.

I used the phrase at one stage last week that it’s a form of tanking, what (Hawthorn’s) going down the path of, and I’m not backing away from that”.

Damian Barrett - 11/06/23

I really messed up with that statement, I now see it was nonsensical, and I’m sorry and I apologise.

I can now appreciate the Hawks’ innovative and longer term thinking. Without cutting players like O’Meara, Mitchell, Gunston, (and Shiels and Howe who Clarko wanted to clog up the North list), players like Nash, Brockman, Weddle, Butler and Mackenzie would not have been getting the valuable game time they’ve had so far this year. I now understand that forward thinking and that it’s paying dividends by the truckload”.

Only joshing of course
There’s no way in the world that blinkered w***er would ever make a statement like that.

Awesome I ️it!🤣

I was going to go with the other #2, but well played...

A quality winger like Isaac or Hilly would be great aswell?

I said to my mates I haven't seen a run down the wing like Brockman since Hilly. I think our wings are going to be OK esp with Seamus qualities.
