Not enough love for Mark McKenzie, bloke is operating in darkness with only a minimal bank roll and turning water into wine.

This upcoming draft really sets us up for the next period. Head coach, list management, and development coaches are so important to the strategy of the club, get these three pieces right and good things happen.

Only needs to find a few more pieces of the puzzle and we will be deep into September.

I am a HUGE fan of what he has done so far.
He has a excellent eye for talent and character.
We're in good hands.

He's done the impossible it is looking like he has steered us to a soft landing after the Clarko/Wright can being kicked down the road.

The US Federal reserve should line him up.

Sammy’s got a pretty good eye also 👍

Mark McKenzie has done a really good job of identifying quality players in the second and third round of the national draft over the last three years. C.MacDonald, Mitchell, Butler & Brockman are just some examples. Talk about getting good value for money.

Mitchell Lewis at 76 is gonna be hard to beat.
He will probably kick 300 goals for us by the time he is finished.

Hmmm

if he only kicks 300 from here, we are in strife

he is already on 100

we want him to become a 50+ goal a season forward as the big banana as a minimum, even more when we are in contention

reckon he has at least 7 seasons after the current

I’m a massive fan but he’ll be 25 this year. He’ll need a Tom Hawkins like late bloom to clock up the numbers to be one of our greats.

Here’s hoping he does.
nah it won't be the goals that determine that. it'll be the flags

I was being conservative, given his injury history.
I fully expect him to kick +400 if he plays 18-22 games a season.

I feel a bit for Chad. Came to the club under a different coach/vision, probably had the worst delivery into the forward line out of any other team during his time with helicopter kicks coming down on his head ……….. Always admired his talents/skills still do and I reckon he will kick some nice little bags with the improving synergy of the young mids we have.

Obviously under different money given his age but he is a keeper for me for the next couple of years.
IMO superfluous to our needs. His body can't hold up consistently and he no longer trusts himself to kick over 40m, hence the risky passes. We need to find spots for resting mids as the midfield group grows and matures. We have 3 big brutes for the heavy lifting but the likes of McDonald, Moore, Husthwaite probably have quicker hands in close, particularly in the later rotations.

Digressing to CJ, I have mixed feelings. I feel that down back he offers good aerial presence in an area where we are deficient, but, like Frost, his ambition often exceeds his capability at present. I like the idea of getting defensive games into Mitchell and Weddle as part of the core group. With another preseason they will both be better one on one defenders and they both offer line breaking potential, but in different ways. With Impey back in good form I would prefer that CJ worked on his deficiencies at Box Hill.

He’s someone hitting his prime and very much capable of dominant numbers. He’ll only get better than he his now and he’s already been one of the better forwards in the comp, his numbers and the way he plays I wouldn’t replace him with anyone.

I get the feeling that CJ's form issues are injury related and he'll show us the player he really is next season, much the way Impey has this year. We have short memories but CJ showed patches of dominance last year

This has always been the issue. I had a big argument with someone on here last year about CJ being "elite". Absolutely, he has elite traits. But he is not an elite footballer yet as he has never delivered on those traits consistently across half a season. I really want to see him get a clean run at it, and deliver on his potential.

The right wing could be his. I would love to see him play some games there at box hill to train the role and then come in for bramble.

Before we make the next round of list management calls at year end, these are the things I would like to see.
1. CJ on the wing for an extended run
2. Jeka at half forward playing as the lead up connector and delivering inside 50
3. DGB and Ned Long playing seniors
4. Scrimshaw forward
5. Ryan in some games given his 6 month contract
6. A Box Hill flag

HAWK SET TO SIGN

HAWTHORN key defender James Blanckis finalising a new deal to remain at Waverley Park after joining the club just over 12 months ago.

The 22-year-old has played 16 games since being recruited with the second-last live pick in the 2022 mid-season rookie draft.

Young Hawthorn ruckman Max Ramsden is believed to be the only player from last year's mid-season intake to secure a deal for 2024 and beyond, with Blanck close to joining him.

Hawthorn list manager Mark McKenzie secured the priority signatures of Will Day and Dylan Moore early in the year, as well as Jarman Impey and top-10 pick Cam Mackenzie more recently, and is now working through a few other contracts.

The Hawks are understood to be close to locking in half-back Seamus Mitchell and small forward Tyler Brockman.

James Worpel commenced talks with the club in recent weeks, following an impressive first half of 2023 from the inside midfielder who has recaptured the 2019 form that saw him win the Peter Crimmins Medal.

Dual All-Australian Chad Wingard doesn't have a contract for next year and faces an uncertain future heading into the closing months of the season, given he is currently playing for Box Hill and has struggled with durability issues in recent years.

Let’s not forget our eyes in these regions, the scouts, have a big say in our draft order as they push forward the players that they’ve watched and their attributes.
Man I would love to sit in on the sessions they have pre-draft where they discuss draft order

We’ve got a whole team of people who are doing a very good job, that are relatively unknown.
