List Mgmt. Hawk's List Management for 2025

Usually do one of these before the trade period but was caught-up with other stuff this year so here is my post-trade period update! This is what I have at the moment. As you can see, firstly the list is STACKED in terms of talent (which we already knew) but is also pretty close to being completely full as it is. If what I have is correct, then we have 36 primary list, 4 Cat A and 1 Cat B locked in for next year which leaves us with limited options in terms of drafting next month and SSP/MSD in 2025.

If I had to guess, I'd say we are likely to delist-then-rookie one or both of Gunston and/or Breust for flexibility. Regardless, we can only intake a max of 2 players to primary/Cat A list at the moment plus the option of another Cat B player if we want (which I suspect we will re-sign Bennetts with).

As usual, if you spot any mistakes then please let me know :)

CJ doesn’t get fit often enough to play the majority of games. Yet they both got decent extensions. 🤷‍♂️
CJ doesn’t get fit enough to play the majority of games, yet gets a 3yr extension in season, while injured.

Maginness gets a contract offer after knocking back contracts from Swans and Bombers, well after the season is complete.

Do you really think it’s the same thing?

Finn's improvement year on year has been quite impressive. I'm really excited to see what he can do in 2025.

If he can sew up a spot early and bank the confidence that comes from it throughout the season I think he can be a strong contributor to our side at the pointy end.

Has all the physical gifts and has started to clean up his disposal.

No - but I genuinely think Finn and others are close to, and possibly passing CJ in the pecking order, partly due to CJs inability to get on the park.

Hence he may not be a first choice player (even when fit) because the quality of the others’ output has improved.

It remains to be seen, but in no way is Jiath, if fit, a guaranteed starter in a team which is vastly improved from the 2021/2022 version.

Lets hope he doesn't take after his uncle
Why?

137 games, 3 premierships and 28 Brownlow votes before he was a victim of how cash strapped the club became. Had an excellent 1989 season.

Seems like a good career before he went to Richmond.

Sure, if we just ignore that every time he’s fit he’s in the side…

I thought he was talking physically

Greg was a bean pole

Maginness doesn’t get games every time he is fit.
"every time he is fit"

Yeah, for 6 weeks every season.
Great.

If our priority is to get Harley Reid this season, CJ is one of a number of players we should strongly consider moving on if he can't improve on his availability.

CJ, Lewis, Ward... all of these guys have something to prove this season, and each has quality attributes that could propel us to a flag, but sometimes you've got to be pragmatic.

Sometimes you've got to pick the fruit before it spoils, and maybe that time is the end of this upcoming season if they don't improve output.

Each would attract a bid that could be parlayed into a Reid trade, in addition to our top picks.

Oh, I remember.

But anyone who says someone shouldn't take after his three time premiership uncle should have the question asked, why.

No club and coach gives a player 3 year extension with a plan to trade them some times i am not sure you think through things before posting. That's why u end up with the crap u just posted. Just as an aside we r not getting Harley

Was he not fit for the semi?

The club never said he wasn't fit heading into the finals, from what I can remember.

He couldn't get near it at Box Hill in the elimination final, while Josh Ward and Finn Maginness put in massive efforts to earn their spots in the senior side for September.

Harry Morrison was also firmly entrenched back in the side, after originally replacing Jiath if memory serves me correct.

It was a case of bad timing for CJ.

If you believe that he wasn't fit enough to be selected, then that sucks for him.
If you believe that he simply wasn't going to play ahead of Morrison, Ward and Finn who were all in better form, then that also sucks for him.

Let's check on how many players have been traded 12 months after signing extensions...

A lot can change in 12 months.

None mate. A lot can change in 12 months but Hawthorn don't give a 3 yr extension and trade u

Edit if they were concerned with his body they would have given him a one or two year extension. That's the if things change in 12months ure still under contract we trade u now while ure still under contract with a year to go

He was definitely an injury risk

I think we agree. He was fit for the semi. He was listed as an emergency, which debunks the argument that he plays whenever he’s fit.

Trade time: target's club says they want CJ in the trade package with a top pick/s.

Could be Reid, could be a King brother, Oscar Allen, whoever...
We're not saying no to that.

MM looks over the stats, the huge number of options to play the same roles, the unreliable history.
...and he will push the CJ chip across the table.

At their best, I want all of CJ, Lewis, and Ward to stay.
It's time to deliver though.

During the season I'd said I would select Morrison on a wing before Jiath. Injury forced that change, but Harry ultimately proved that call to be a good one.

Jiath's athleticism will always give him the opportunity to expand his game, but Harry's footy IQ and dependability were what I felt the side needed heading into finals.

Lol u have dreamt this scenario up and we r not playing poker. First and most importantly if they are struggling to get on the field we r not getting any value for them. They are more valuable to us. Second the players u want to trade for are a only a dream

There is something special about him.
There is also something awkward about him.

I'd love to see him play as a HFF tbh.
He plays both taller than his height in the contest, and smaller when the ball hits the ground.
Combine that with his running, and he's a difficult match-up.
We only want players with genuine fwd craft. We did this during 2024 season. We gelled really well. It makes a big difference. IMO.

I agree we won’t push them and Reid is cats or pies bound, but what do you think about the chances of players like CJ or Lewis either having their heads turned or looking for a fresh start? There’s quite a number of examples of players who are injury prone changing clubs to hopefully get on the park and they would both fit into that category. Clubs especially the top up pies will surely be sniffing around our depth this year.

Generally u get ure depth leaving as u say. Lewis plays when he is fit and the same can be said for CJ
