Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

They are predicting a bit of rain for tomorrow. I think they will help us more than you guys, as hopefully it might hinder your forward line somewhat.

If it stays dry i can't see us stopping your forwards, so i hope it rains. (although i'll be sitting in the open so it's a catch 22)

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

Keep an eye out for the Hodge v Shaw matchup...this may just eventuate...or perhaps Shaw v Mitchell.

Just got a feeling MM will bite the bullet with Shaw this week

Shaw v Mitchell could well be the most unaccountable match up of the year. If these two go within 50m of each other it would be a miracle. I expect nothing less than 40 possession each.:p

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

I reserved some tickets on Tues. They are far better than what i got last time, which were booked about 2-3 weeks in advance.
Couldnt even get a ticket on ground level last time without paying top dollar. Got some in Row M Ponsford stand which is where I assume most Hawks will be this time around.

Also thumbs up to the magpie previewer. Great stuff.

Booked mine this morning. was surprised to see there is still level 2A tickets. I have a feeling it may struggle to get above 60k.

and for the record guys, it is $20 for a level 2A ticket, loved it vs Melbourne, haha

Will we still be able to scan membership and sit on level one?

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

I used to hate Collingwood but now I feel something close to slight endearment for the mob that destroyed the Handbaggers. Massive respect. :thumbsu:

Games against the Magpies have worried me in recent fixtures. They play a hard style of footy and have the ability to turn it on against the great teams (like us :D). Needless to say, form counts for almost nothing and I'm sure Mick Malthouse will give them a massive kick up the bum. Expect them to come out breathing fire and the tackle count will be up a lot higher than it has been in previous weeks.

Having said this, we will still prevail. There's no way we will go three losses in a row. Hawks by 15 in a closely contested wet and windy game.

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

How did DaVe86 go with his predictions

At the selection table:

I have no real idea who MM will elect to line up this week. However I do think changes are required.

The Josh Fraser dilemma remains. There is no real evidence that he is back into fantastic form at VFL level. There is also no real indication as to whether he can ruck at AFL level. Malthouse has said Fraser is a ruckman and will not return until he can compete in the bounces. I totally agree.

However, Bryan and Wood were terrible last week, and equally as bad the week before. Each have had a fantastic 2 month period where they have really staked their claim. But they both looked tired and disinterested last week. Scott Burns was actually forced to take a ruck dual against Hille. Hille simply plucked the ball out of the air and snapped a goal. He was able to pluck the ball out of the air a number of times because Bryan or Wood were trailing behind out of the contest.

I think it is Wood who could be dropped. He was horrible against Hawthorn in round 7. I also like Bryan’s footskills against Hawthorn. If we are struggling to break the cluster, then Bryan may simply be able to kick over it. Plus they lack a good size matchup if he elects to rest forward.

But this may be a waste of breath considering no one knows the state of Josh Fraser. I think it has become evident in the past fortnight that we need Josh if we want to push deep into September. As it stands, I’m not sure if we are even going to make the 8. A loss this week will most likely drop us outside. But my worry is that Campbell and Taylor are good tap ruckmen, and if Josh cant ruck, then Mitchell is going to have a field day in the clearances.

As I have mentioned, I’d also love to see Lonie and Dawes come in this week.

Ben Johnson would be the first I’d omit. Admittingly, we need his run and dash off half back against Hawthorn. But his form has been so bad that I don’t think he deserves his spot right now.

I’d have Fraser, Lonie in for Wood and Johnson. Then I think we should also find room for Dawes. Preferably I’d like the omission to be Maxwell simply because I was unable to find a matchup for him in the Hawks forward line, and I think Anthony can go back into defence if need be. With Dawes in the team, this is a good option.

I don’t think bringing in too many kids is the answer. If Dawes comes in, we also have Anthony, Wellingham and Brown as first year players at AFL level. Then Clarke is in his 2nd year, and Pendlebury and Thomas in their 3rd. That’s young enough against a top 4 side.

There may be some concern over Rhyce Shaw given his injury last week. If he does not pull up, I am keen on getting some gametime into young Isles. He is quick and in good nick at VFL level. This would probably be the only other change I would make if the need is there.

And the Teams as selected:

COLLINGWOOD v HAWTHORN
Collingwood
B: Heath Shaw, Nathan Brown, Tyson Goldsack
HB: Martin Clarke, Nick Maxwell, Harry O’Brien
C: Tarkyn Lockyer, Scott Burns, Alan Toovey
HF: Scott Pendlebury, Travis Cloke, Leon Davis
F: Alan Didak, Paul Medhurst, Shane O’Bree
Foll: Josh Fraser, Dane Swan, Dale Thomas
I/C: Ryan Lonie, Sharrod Wellingham, Chris Bryan, John Anthony
EMG: Danny Stanley, John McCarthy, Sam Iles

In: Fraser, Goldsack, Lonie, Toovey
Out: Ben Johnson, Cameron Wood, Rhyce Shaw (back), Shane Wakelin (rested)

Hawthorn
B: Campbell Brown, Stephen Gilham, Brent Guerra
HB:Thomas Murphy, Trent Croad, Grant Birchall
C: Jordan Lewis, Sam Mitchell, Rick Ladson
HF: Shane Crawford, Lance Franklin, Chance Bateman
F: Mark Williams, Jarryd Roughead, Cyril Rioli
Foll: Robert Campbell, Luke Hodge, Brad Sewell
I/C: Stuart Dew, Xavier Ellis, Simon Taylor, Cameron Stokes
EMG: Brent Renouf, Travis Tuck, Clinton Young

In: Crawford, Dew
Out: Michael Osborne (corked buttock), Travis Tuck

Looks like DaVe86 got 2 right - Fraser & Lonie in and 3 right out - Wood & Johnson plus the injury to R Shaw.

Interesting those 3 dropped (or rested in 1 case) are not even named as emergencies... must really be down on form.

Do you reckon Matthew James and Scott Jeffrey are hiding their real surnames?

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

For this game you must factor in the let down effect. Everyone was pumped for last week, I have no doubt there will be a let down. How we handle it will determine if we are genuine or not.

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

Did anybody else have that sinking feeling in their gut seeing McLaren named as an umpire?
There is nothing surer than my blood boiling at some point tonight due to some pedantic over officious petty decisions that will be made by this man.

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

wow, might get a decent match with the umpires. McLaren hates us, the other 2 hate collingwood.

granted that Mclaren keeps up his free kick ratio of 1 free every 1.5 minutes in his "zone" against hawthorn, and the other 2 keep up their crap, we could win the count.

Also, werent these the umpires last time?

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

What's with Toovey coming in for Collingwood???? He's a complete hack and this is largely acknowledged by Collingwood supporters even.

It must be some strategy to tag Hodge or Mitchell.

Re: Hawks vs Collingwood preview

All the media have built this game up as the Pies crunch game that they must win, well how about Hawthorn they have won 2 out the past 6 games lookig at a 3rd straight los for the first time since round 16-18 2006.
After the great effort Hawthorn gave againts the Cats they must come out and show why they are a threat.
We all heard from them at how confidant they are now coz they came close to beating the reining premiers, and how much it hurt and they dont want to lose close games anymore, but to win every game well now is the time for them to walk it like they talk it, if Hawthorn lose to a Pies side that is heading down the ladder then they dont deserve to play finals and wont be a threat to any side playing finals...
