Autopsy Hawks vs The Pusscats

Watched the game again (on holidays & wifey was out). I noticed that while Frawley seemed at a loss in trying to make decisions when it came to ball-movement, he won quite a few one-on-ones. I haven't really seen much of his time at Melbourne (having only just got foxtel recently), but it seems he can hold his own. Probably comes from having to do so with the Demons (not much else you can do during those times I guess). Add knowledge and execution of the team game-plan to that and we've got (another) cog to a strong defense.

I saw it 68-32, but that's because some bonehead in the clubhouse decided navy blue would look great for Hawthorn supporters to wear against a club whose main colour is... navy blue.

Ladies and gentlemen, my avatar.

You're getting pretty boring.

Just to please you, I'm going to buy each of the 5 members of my family the navy blue tops.

Lose a soldier, replace a soldier.

But if I had to pick any, I'd say Burgoyne, Lake, Roughead.

Are you thinking of calling out a hit on them? ;-)
I would go,
1.The Rough we have no real replacement for!
2.Burgoyne a special moments type of player
3.Cyril his pressure is under rated.
4.Brad Hill he is almost untaggable.
5.Hodgey you cannot replace his leadership.
6.Lake his marking on the last line.

The attendance yesterday at the G. It seemed very heavily Hawthorn. Like 70-30. Did others see it this way?
It's usually like that with Geelong games in Melbourne. Even later in the year when it's a Cats home game there will still be way more Hawk fans.

I did like the way you are now allowed to use the electronic advertisement hoardings to promote your own club colours. It's the first time I've felt like this was truly Hawthorn's home ground rather than just the 'G'.

Also creates a cleaner stadium, meaning more $$$ for the home teams

..In retrospect...felt like the Cats may have underestimated us..and thought that we may have been underdone and a bit slow out of the blocks..particularly after they matched it with us in the first quarter...
thoughts?

The cats need to rejuvenate their midfield. They have Selwood who at times was not even playing there. Kelly is finished as a mid. Bartel the same. Johnson has tricks but is not a match winner anymore. The kids have not come on yet. Other than Motlop (who they need forward) and Cockatoo who was playing his first game they have no pace - anywhere. Defence lacks pace, mids lack pace, forwards lack pace. And now that the Hawks have two genuine key defenders the cats high ball game no longer troubles us either - think of how many games they won with fast long balls to Hawkins/JPod/Mooney.

The cats need Dangerfield. Imagine they landed him and Ablett came home

Mitchell helped his case with his glowing report of the incident, it was intentional but oh well, I think SJ copped lots of hard hits yesterday anyhow
Mitch ain't dumb. He know's that having Stevie J play against the Dockers next week will more than likely result in further shenanigans between the two clubs that don't feel a lotta love for each other. More lasting suspensions/ramifications may arise from that match. Not that it helps us directly as we don't play the Dockers until July.

Maybe they are just marking time till that happens

Just finished watching the game again. We really put some space between us and them, and they let us.

Scott would like to think that it's Round 1, but if the Geelong boys are giving in to their arch rivals so easily then he'd want to be asking some hard questions.

Was wondering whether I was getting too excited about Hawthorn and maybe Geelong was just crap. I was too busy sinking beers and rubbing it into Cats supporters near me to notice the finer details

I think they are. Their recruiting was very strange last year. They lost Christiansen and Motlop and replaced them with Ryse Stanley and Mitch Clark. And did this knowing that their midfield had been getting smashed all year already. They made no effort to fix their midfield except to get Cockatoo who will not come on til next year at least.

They are up to something down there.

If Johnson, Bartel, Kelly, Enright and maybe one other retire this year they are going to have one hell of a kity to play with.

It struck me as pretty odd too. Maybe they were going by the rationale of going after the best player available (they did make a play for Frawley) rather than trying to fill a specific hole with a someone below par.... just don't mention Sam Blease.

Dangerfield will improve them but he won't be enough on his own. They are a good two or three quality midfielders short right now and their best ball user in Stevie J will be gone next year. I think they'll have no choice but to play Motlop in the middle as much as possible, which makes their forwardline far less threatening. Same problem we had a few years ago with Rioli before Bruest & Poppy came through, which was why I was always advocating playing him as a permanent forward nevermind the hamstrings.

Overall they looked far too tall and slow on the weekend. That might not hurt them as much against say Freo but will kill them against Port.

Here is a list of every Demons game James Frawley has been a part of where they won by a margin equal to or greater than the one on Monday:

Round 19, 2009
Round 5, 2010
Round 17, 2010
Round 4, 2011
Round 7, 2011
Round 13, 2011
Round 13, 2012

Most of them are against very green Gold Coast and GWS sides too.

Perhaps he'll have matched or surpassed this tally of 7 with us by the end of the season. Good start...

Agreed. I thought that was a great look.

I would think it may be undertaken for every home team at the MCG.

However the thought of the MCG in red and black for Sunday is making me feel a bit queasy ...

Melbourne ran hot mid 2011. WTF happened?

Melbourne ran hot mid 2011. WTF happened?

Melbourne belted the Suns (in their first season, if I recall correctly) at the MCG by 90 points, got smacked by the Eagles in Perth, and then belted the Crows at the MCG by kicking eight goals to one in the third quarter after a relatively even first half.

Later in the season was the infamous game against the Cats in Geelong where Melbourne lost by 186 points and Dean Bailey was sacked even though originally it was going to be Schwab and Connolly sacked (if memory serves).

It was fantastic, for me there is no greater "old enemy" than geelong.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to applaud the coaching group (silently & I hope, respectively ) as they entered the lift at the beginning of 3/4 time. There are times that one cannot resist the chance to show your deep appreciation and awe for the real "Generals" of this great club. Foremost was not wanting to interfere in the "moment".

Not far from my place there is your usual arrogant geelong supporter, with the flagpole in the front yard, it has never taken much for him to find an excuse to run up the cat's flag, often it would remain up after a loss, or sometimes after a good night at training.
I must concede that he must now have a sense of humour.

The cats flag was flying at 1/2 mast this morning, loved it !!!!!
This loss must have hit him pretty hard.

Well the sense of humour didn't seem to have lasted long.

The cats flag is back at full mast on the flag pole. (and they got a pantsing FFS!).

Learn from this Hawks fans, be humble in Victory and in defeat.
