Autopsy Hawks vs The Pusscats

There's some good eggs on the Geelong board - sadly they are drowned out by a tidal wave of flogs that make Essendon fans seem sensible by comparison.

Agreed. I know some ripper Geelong people, but some of the nuffies who simply cannot accept they lost in 2008 really drag the level down on this forum. As I said, I rate the Geelong Football Club highly and have a lot of respect for their club, it's a pity SOME of their supporters don't have a little dignity.

Now for the sheer pleasure of it I'm going to talk about Geelong and why their era is finally over. :D:D:D

For starters their youth hasn't taken the next step. Smedts, Guthrie, Caddy, Murdoch, Duncan, Blicavs and Horlin-Smith are good average footballers. Too much is being left to their silverbeards who are beginning to show signs of being past their used by date. Its only one game but Kelly, Enright, Lonergan and Bartel are all looking decidedly crispy and Stevie J did nothing after half time and has chronic foot issues.

The core problem is their midfield. Without Varcoe and Christensen they are decidedly one paced. Playing Bartel & Kelly through there just makes it worse. Unfortunately they have little choice since their kids tend to get monstered in contested ball and aren't that quick anyway.
Motlop has become an excellent player but they desperately need him in the forward line where they lack crummers and X-factor in general, but if they do that they lose one of their few midfield linebreakers. This kills them because they still rely on run and carry through the center so heavily. You'd think Chris Scott would've been working on a "plan B" over the summer but I guess not!

Up forward Hawkins & Clark is a great combination in theory that is going to cost them in practice. Hawkins is most dangerous when they clear out the forwardline and let him engage his opponent one-on-one, what they really need is quality crummers at his feet not another lumbering brute like Clark who has never impressed me with his defensive pressure and will allow oppositions to waltz the ball out of their forward-line even easier. This is where they desperately miss Varcoe because they are seriously lacking forward pressure and his pace always had guys like Birchall & Suckling looking over their shoulders.

Their backline is still solid at guarding the high ball, its a pity most good teams are smart enough these days to lower their eyes and hit up leading targets which is something the Cats are ordinary at defending against. I feel like I'm repeating myself but Taylor, Lonergan and Rivers are not quick and they will really struggle against a team like Port.

Geelong remind me a lot of Hawthorn back in 2009 or 2010. Some big name champion players who need replacing, numerous kids who aren't ready and a gameplan that's been well and truly picked apart. They'll still beat plenty of decent teams on their day but the aura is gone and teams won't fear them.
The cracks are already wide enough now that I don't think landing Dangerfield will save them when a good three or four of their best players on whom they rely so heavily will probably depart at year's end, something that may even be necessary for them to afford to throw the kitchen sink at Paddy.

It'll be very interesting to see if they try to hang around the bottom half of the eight for the next few years or pack it in and start a full rebuild.
I'd love to get some thoughts on these matters from Geelong posters like Son of God who've been very active on our board the past fortnight. :)

Have a look at the 15 or 20 seconds before Andersons goal and watch how good he was at making sure we kept possession. A couple of little tap ons and for rewarded with a goal. :thumbsu:

From memory he laid on a big hit just before this as well which started the chain of plays that resulted in his goal.

Man it would it have felt good to have utterly humilaited them by 15 goals, and it should have been that. The last quarter was a comedy of goal shooting errors.

Apart from that, today was a thing of beauty. To the point where I think the 'rivalry' is actually dead. Or at least back in a dormant state. We are just that far ahead of them now.

I find it interesting how they had a purple patch for a few years against us, when their club was at the best it's been for its entire history they fell over the line against us in a bunch of meaningless H&A games and a single non knock out final. During that time, we beat them in 2 knock out finals and one non knock out final. Now that we are back to somewhere near out best, we are flogging them by comfortable and big margins again.

They are truly our perenial bridesmaids.

Aren't we lucky! Happy Scott from the rats is on The Couch after AFL 360. I have the tissues for him hehe..He NEVER gives credit for the winners. I hope Freo flog them next week, Oh What a Feeling..
The Rats will be 0-2 after that game..:D

How long has it been since the Cats have lost 3 games in a row? And if they lose the next round for 4 in a row?

This deserves special attention, given how hard they fought to bring in Rivers, and yet he has not come on at all. Also he's now 30 and aging himself. If Chip even holds his skill from where he is, he'll be the better of the two ex-melbourne defender recruits

I've just read eveery page of the geelong game day thread, and apart from reading them whingeing about umpiring at a point where the free kick cound was `14 7 in geelong's favour, I feel as though I have supped on Geelong despair and gorged myself on their tears.

Man I am so repleat, I feel I might spew.

God that was satisfying.

Normally I don't do that, but this was geelong.

With the exception of a few (who have been on this board of late) the rest are tedious petulant children with no grace and even less dignity.
Their autopsy thread was a lot more humble in defeat tbh.

Lewis, Ceglar, Poppy and Burgoyne were all fantastic. Really love Hodge's work around the centre bounces too. Can't see anyone being dropped for next week that's for sure. However sometimes Suckling really knows how to shank a kick....

Just got back from the game and polished off a pizza and half a bottle of red!

I was really impressed by Ceglar and McEvoy. They both had great mobility and presence of mind.

Bruest was rusty early, but, jeez, he's a star. Must be murder on oppositions trying to keep him, Poppy, Sizzle, Roughie and Gunners in check.

Two things impressed me in the second and third quarters. 1) Our tackling pressure was superb. Really tough and hard. The cats were quivering in their boots any time the ball came near them. 2) Our team seems to have some sort of hive like mind. It was like one of those games you get in show bags, where there are fifteen tiles and one space and you've got to move them around to get everything aligned. Everyone knew the moves and in the blink of an eye it was all open space and a free passage to goal. When you couple that with intense pressure you're playing the game at a totally different level than it's ever been played before.

I'm sure we're going to loose a few games this year, but boy, it's going to be an interesting ride!!! Sometime this is going to come to an end, so I'm drinking in every moment.

I actually agree, I think it might be a sign of what Burgoyne thinks of the young fella. That or he just loved smashing him as much as I loved watching it.

When the game was hot Burgers was outstanding ...It looks as though he loves playing against the rats

If he keeps playing like that he should get a contract extension ;)

Not sure id have given Cockatoo the number 5 jumper in his first year ....but then we ave TOB the number 23 :(

Players need to earn the "big" numbers IMHO

They called Lloyd the Velvet Sledgehammer but it's more apt for Burgoyne.

Unlike Lloyd's sniperidge (that's a word - I swear), Burgoyne has a beautiful ability to make an opponent hurt big time and fairly while being an absolutely sexy beast (man love, no homo) with the ball in his hands.
