Questions to be raised about Geelong cap (Steven, Higgins and now Cameron)

Can't imagine they'll get all of them, and Cameron is the only one that warrants a truly big pay packet.

They're in trouble if they're chasing Higgins, Goldstein and Steven who will all be 30+ next year.

Cameron the only one that will get them closer to a flag.
Kelly gone, Selwood majorly regressing on his usual output and Ablett not the same albeit still good, they are not far off a substantial decline. Will happen next year.
From a cap POV losing kelly doesn’t open up cap (he’s on near minimum I think). Getting in 3 more experienced players and one being high paid... cannot see how it can be done.

Of course Steve Hocking could be massaging the cap records

If we had Tim Kelly we'd have traded him back to West Coast for 2 2nd rounders last year when he sulked, maybe even 1 2nd rounder knowing us. Geelong refused, be interesting if they get no one wanting to join them in the future.
They’re not the same things though.

Kelly was contracted. His manager can understand why Geelong hold him to the contract. He might not like it, but he knows that a contract means that Geelong have every right to hold him to it.

If we were to do this dance with Patton for 12 months, then drop him like a bag of potatoes out of revenge then his manager would be telling every man and his dog what a shambles Hawthorn are and how they lack integrity. Our name and our brand would be mud within days.

It's Connors btw.

Agreed, the only way out is if GWS up their trade price for him now.

What about the Saints. With there free salary, there is no way they can afford Hill, Ryder, Heath, Jones, Greenwood and B Crouch

Steven and Carlisle leaving and a list surely front loaded to meet cap - I don’t have any suspicion re saints.

Deals don’t happen as clubs can’t agree terms all the time. We owe no favours to GWS. Patton, with 3 recos and an 800k salary, is not worth much. If GWS want any more than a verylate pick I see no reason why we couldn’t walk with our integrity intact.

Of course we are not going to suddenly just drop the Patton trade out of spite - that’s stupid. But our appetite to be bent over in a trade is probably at an all time low. If a deal can’t be done so be it - that’s business.

They’ve obviously cleared some space for Kelly, which they won’t be using. That would come from some impending retirements over the next season or 2... but seriously what are they thinking in trying to recruit Stevens, Higgins, Goldstein?? You could call it flag chasing but their list will be completely shot in 2-3 years. Would Cameron really want to go to a side that will be heading for a rebuild?

Plus I’m fairly sure Sydney are covering some of Hanners’ salary.

Don't judge Kelly's choices without understanding his reasons.

You mean having your wife struggle to raise two kids with no support network is worthy of some empathy? It’s 2019 mate - all loyalty should be paid to your benevolent employer.

Edit - the above was meant with heavy, heavy sarcasm.

I think you need to show a little more compassion Ned. Kelly's eldest son has been diagnosed with autism and one of his other ones is showing early signs of autism too which definitely wouldn't be easy. Now I'm not saying he should be allowed to get to choose his club out of WC / Freo if he wants to go back to WA so which ever team strums up the best compensation should be able to get his signature IMO. Also FWIW I'm pretty sure Kelly has 3 kids not 2 with the 2 younger ones being twins. Anyways all I'm saying is yes a little compassion should be shown but definitely not a free ticket to his preferred destination.

I disagree with this, Dustin Martin has become a quality person. Richmond have done tremendously with him and he's really grown up as a person. As crazy as it sounds he's become a deeply philosophical bloke now that he doesn't feel as though he has to do what everyone expects him to do.
Think you missed my point, at 18 was Martin displaying the above?
All i recall was a boy who had tremendous respect and love for his father, whom had questionable links in society.
Do yo think Martin would have gone down the above path or the Jake King path?

Pretty sure his post was heavily sarcastic.
