“All three clubs drafted two players in the first round in 2015, but the Hawks and Demons haven't used one since and neither has one this year.

They can do as they wish with their first-round pick in the 2019 NAB AFL Trade Period, including offloading a future one, because they have used at least two in the preceding four-year period”

We can trade both our 2019 and 2020 pick.

Right - preceding 4 years being 2015-16-17-18. I assumed it was inclusive of this year, meaning 2015 would've have counted anymore.

If that's the case, I can absolutely see our strategy to be getting hold of two first round picks this year to allow us freedom for the next 4 years

Thanks for that :thumbsu:

You want to risk him to gws management?
It’s not in their interests to mismanage him and he’s got this far under their watch. If he’s keen to get to Hawthorn then we either make it happen this year with a reasonable deal (given the circumstances of free agency) or we get him as a free agent next year. Our first and “player X” (who we can only assume is a player we’re not going to want to lose) is too much. Particularly given free agency compo could be scrapped by this time next year. Which would mean we’d hold most of the cards in either case.

Remember....only if Whitfield agrees to a trade shall a discussion take place.
If he wants to come, I suspect we jump on it immediately. No point waiting a year where anything can happen, all sorts of bullshit godfather deals, etc. There's no guarantee he walks to us in a year. Pay what we need to and pull the trigger.

Sounds more and more like We're not getting Cogs then
Why? Cogs is a FA. Whitfield can be traded for. The only issue is how we fit them into the salary cap. But if we can, getting both is certainly possible.

You've nailed it. I think 2 first rounders will be on the table for Whitfield and throw Patton in as steak knives. Aim to get their first back for this year too. A pick slide.
If we land Cogs on top of that. Forget about it.

Don’t we have to use a first this year so if we trade it out and can’t get one back as clubs know we have to.

You know that means something else going out or else it will be our Christmas dreams come true ;)
I think GWS really need & probably want some leaders who know how to get the group to play as 1 & for each other.
They could do worse than look at a couple of our older players for that
