Prediction Hawthorn 2018 Number Allocations

Got a reply today, numbers already allocated. There was also a very small glimmer of hope that the allocation of #1 may be reconsidered in the future.
No doubt #1 will be assigned again one day. It’s just stupid that it still isn’t. The club do a lot right and the sentiment behind the original “the fans are #1” is swell, but they were always going to assign it again some day and they’ve dugged themselves into a hole. Because when they do eventually assign it again it’s going to come along with all the (mostly joking, but some genuine) remarks about how “guess the fans aren’t appreciated as much now!”

Just bloody give it to someone and let’s all pretend it was never a thing...

Adelaide reserved "19" for fans for a while.

Not anymore....it's been issued to a player in 2018.

My view on Brand is that he has already upgraded once and I thought he was happy with 30. It's not a low number, but not that high. Deserves an upgrade thats true.

Miles getting an upgrade is not that odd. Litherland went up to 17 for a short period. Willsmore to 20 was strange.
I think Brand will keep 30. It was a number that a tough CHB wore with pride (Brown) and Brand is that tough key defender.

Surely that confirms Mirra has been given No.1. The bag seems to be the 2018 Hawthorn travel bag, in the 2018 club dark marl grey and has the number on it. Gotta be a lock for No.1 for 2018.

Hoping this is the case! All Box Hill Hawks stuff tends to have BOX HILL above the HAWKS print - so I don't think it is his Box Hill bag. That and I don't think the Box Hill lads would get something like that for their gear - I think I have seen them with regular sports bags with their number on it but not a travel bag like that. Would be great to see the 1 return!

I want Mirra in 27. Spangher was known as being a great clubman and I reckon Mirra has the same trait. This is a list of players who have worn 27 (from the Hawks website). Look at the words associated with the number: clubman, reliable, cult figure. Vickery should never have gotten 27.

Roy Simmonds (1950-1961, Played 192 games) A real cult figure, a terrific clubman who was famed within the confides of Glenferrie for his sociable nature. Versatile and courageous, he was particularly strong, very effective as a rover, centre man or the back pocket. Won the Best and Fairest 1956, Named in the Team of the Century, 2001 and Inducted into the Hall of Fame, 2013.

David Parkin (1961-1974, Games 211) an extremely dedicated footballer who embraced the Hawthorn work ethic. Reliability and courage were his trademarks. Named Captain, 1969-1973, he played many fine games from the back pocket. Captained the 1971 Premiership team, won the Best and Fairest in 1965 and was named a Club Legend in 2013.

Alle de Wolde (1975-1982, Games 97) A reliable back pocket specialist with a reputation of a valued clubman with his co-operative manner, always team first. Played in the 1978 Premiership team.

John Barker (1998-2006, Games 113) became a real cult figure with the Hawks fans, with his own personal cheer squad, the John Barker Wing with banners prominently displayed at all venues. Initially a key back-man but developed into a strong marking forward when asked to replace the injured Nick Holland. His two long match-winning goals will live forever in the memory Hawk fans who witnessed his two goals against Port Adelaide in the 2001 Semi Final.

Stephen Gilham (2006-2012, Games 98) followed coach Alastair Clarkson from Port Adelaide becoming a regular in defence where his reach and athleticism equipped him for a variety of roles. In 2008 he temporarily lost his place in the side but a pickup in form enabled him to regain his place and ultimately the Premiership.

Matt Spangher (2013-on, Games 23) was picked by Hawthorn as insurance for tall forwards defenders. Became a cult figure with the fans with his dark flowing hair and enthusiasm for the contest. Struck form mid 2014 and played a valued role in the 2014 Premiership team.

Roy Simmonds was one of the best guys you could ever meet. He often came around to our house after games when I was a boy, -strictly a lemonade drinker - and he would always remember your name when at the club. Loved the man.

I don't get it.

How is 15 or 12 or 17 an upgrade on 47 or 54?

I just don't understand what everyone is saying. Since when has anyone anywhere said 347 is a better number than 564.34. If you went to school and waited for a problem that included your favourite number and it was 1475.341 you're gonna have a bad time. You get your number and it is yours. It's not a great number it's not a bad number, it's what you do wearing it that makes it great.

Number 44 anyone?

The irony of your username and this post is like a cheese, tomato & pineapple toastie. Delicious

Yeaaah. I like my pineapple.
I also have it on pizza *ducks for cover*

Here I am thinking you’re a decent person and you just reveal your true self.

“Shudder”.

Agreed. It annoys me. I have no idea why it annoys me so much, it just does. Maybe because I keep records of each season, and it just looks stupid to have number 1 vacant at the top of the page, maybe because I used to wear number 1 myself, maybe because I think it is a slap in the face to players who wore the number with distinction in previous years, or maybe just because it serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever.

As you said, very few things have annoyed me with Hawthorn over the years, but this is an exception. Just issue the damned number and get on with it.

Might be because the club has effectively let some focus group marketing team call the shot on what isn’t “just a number on a jumper”, but a piece of Hawthorn history.
