Still doesn't sit right with me trading out Burton. Not very Hawthorn. On top of that we lose picks 15 and 35? Massive overs for a player who hasn't been A-Grade for 2 years and walks end of next season.

I'm disappointed to lose Burton, so I can sympathise with that, but let's not be blinded to the nature of the business.

Under the Australian model (as opposed to the US model where a player has no say in a trade, unless they have a "no trade" clause in their contract), Burton had to agree to a trade. If he didn't want to go, he could have refused Port Adelaide's terms and stayed a Hawk.

I'm also confident that Clarkson can find a way to unlock Wingard's talent. I'm going to love seeing Wingard light up the MCG next season and beyond.

A quick recap of pick #15s over the seasons

2017 - Zac Bailey (Brisbane Lions)
2016 - Jordan Gallucci (Adelaide)
2015 - Daniel Rioli (Richmond)
2014 - Jarrod Garlett (Gold Coast)
2013 - Zak Jones (Sydney Swans)
2012 - Taylor Garner (North Melbourne)
2011 - Brandon Ellis (Richmond)
2010 - Billie Smedts (Geelong)
2009 - Christian Howard (Western Bulldogs)
2008 - Mitchell Brown (Geelong)

Looking at that short list over the last 10 years, Daniel Rioli is the only one that really sticks out.

Of course, the Power might get a 250+ game player to pair with Burton, but history suggests that's no better than even odds (at best).

I'll back the judgment of the club here.

Just a different perspective...

Picks 15 and 35 = pick 8 (going by AFL draft picks value).

There are 1st round picks, then there are 1st round picks.

When you hear "1st round pick, you think top 10 - so a potentially very good player".
But when your 1st round pick is 15, it changes a little bit.

I do think that Information is significant.

P.s. I still think Burton and picks 15 + 35 are overs, but going by the above formula/thinking, maybe the trade would be closer to "fair"?.

AFL pick points don’t mean a single solitary thing unless you’re bidding on a player. Point debates are so naff.

so we traded out our 1st and Second this year and 4th next year plus Burton
We got back Wingard and Ports 3rd for next year

Can't help but think Wrighty isn't done for the day

So acquiring the future 3rd gives us the ability to trade next years first again!!!

What you got cooking GW???
