Hawthorn completely short-changed by the AFL

Yeah - no.

Clubs create informed opinions. Hawthorn were wrong about Young.
Thats just Pelchen complaining about how stupid the FA set up is... he knows he has pick 13 (Unless someone else gets band 1 compo as well) but he cant shop it around because he has to wait a week for the AFL to calculate net gain/loss and make an official announcement.

Compensation

* Clubs can ask for an indication of their draft compensation before they decide to match a rival club’s offer. But the AFL has said clubs will not get a definitive answer on the draft pick they would receive until the offer from a rival club was official.

Port knew they were getting picks in the 30s so they traded their pick in the 40s for Monfries and to protect the higher compo picks.

We made an effort. Melbourne pretty much let Moloney go at the start of the season..

He played sixteen games. We desperately tried to fit him in but in the end he just didn't suit the new gameplan

Should be judged on size of contract and age IMO, Hawks have every right to be dirty IMO (if reports are true Young is on 300kpa+ at collingwood)

More tears?
Is that all you post about any supporters of other teams having a say on something the AFL stuffs up.

Of course Swans supporters never whinge about anything the AFL do.

We all know why.

Of course the Hawks have been shafted by the AFL who once again are making up rules on the go.

Fingers crossed eh!

By you or by me? I couldn't care less. I'm just responding to some shrill posting about the club not doing this and not letting him do that. In the end a club will put their best foot forward if they really want to keep someone and throw in a bit of emotional blackmail if they think it will help but it really boils down to what the individual wants to do.

If a player has already made up their mind that they're going to leave then there's not a lot the club can do about it. If the player is wishy-washy about staying or leaving then that's where a good club can step in and help them decide in the present club's favour.

Before, a club usually with the outgoing player's help would try and do the best by the club. With free agency it's tough t***ies. With free agency it means that a player has already given a club years of service so they shouldn't grumble too much if they decide to go elsewhere.

That's one of the reasons why you got lower compo picks than Port. Young is an unrestricted FA whereas both Pearce and Chaplin are restricted.

I don't see why we should be penalised for Young's decision then. Even if we offered more, Young could have still walked.

At least Port had the opportunity to match and force their players to stay.

Which leads to....

Why should hawthorn get compensation for a player they didn't make the effort to keep?

And what effort did Port make? I think they held the door open for them as they left the building.

Not having a go at Port (I would have let them both go as well)

Clearly you're a fan of US sports and are familiar with how free agency works over there. I'm not, and I'm sure a lot of other AFL fans aren't either. The concept of a team losing a top 3 player like Goddard and receiving significant unders in return is foreign to me. The thought of that team receiving absolutely nothing is even worse.

I'm sure I will get my head around it, but I'm not looking forward to the day when Geelong loses a valuable player - like Goddard, Pearce, Rivers or Young - and receives little in return. Port and Essendon already showed that the system can be manipulated in a way - trading Monfries instead of letting him leave as a FA - and in time other clubs will learn how to use the system to their advantage. But until then...

But they haven't received nothing. They would have received a number of years of good service. In Goddard's case, from a player that any other club would have taken in the draft given the chance.

Good luck to them.

Actually Port was given indication of second rounder for Chaplin and end of furst rounder for Pearce originally.

Is any failure at Hawthorn EVER their own fault?

Hawthorn definately got shafted.
It looks like the AFL are using the compensation picks as an equalisation tool, where the more successful clubs are compensated less than the cellar dwellars.

Pick 66 for both Young and Murphy?

Young is just as if not more valuable than Pearce, Chaplin or Moloney

WCE got a bit shortchanged as well with Q-Stick but he is almost 30 from memory so thats not as bad

Young is 26. Premiership player, Walk up start to a club in premiership contention and is worth almost 400k a year according to Collingwood

Murphy could have and probably should have tbh played in a Grand Final or 2 but is a depth player. However we should have got something for him (probably pick 66 tbh)

Absolutely livid by this for some reason
You realise we got nothing for him too, right?

So the Hawks didn't want to pay Young enough so that he'd stay, and then sook it up about compensation for losing him. Maybe Evo should go back to school teaching.

Pretty clear rules to me..

Clubs were told the compensation would not match what their players would have fetched on the open market, and that it was based on their age, new contract and other contract benefits.

Under those rules how are Lynch and Young rated the same?
