Most people would be starting to assemble their teams by now so ask any relevant questions here...

From a Hawthorn perspective I usually like to avoid our players but there are quite a few that I like this year.

Who I'm watching;

Suckling - Did his knee early last year so getting as close to a full pre season as he is going to get. With Guerra gone he'll do the majority of kick outs.

Hodge - In ripping pre season form. Enjoying a full pre season and the last time that happened he was all Australian captain. Averaged 103 DT points that year too. He's also a defender.

Mitchell - This is the most logical pick for me. If he stays consistent with last year he will be the number one ranked defender for the year.

Birchall - Got off to a flyer early last season and is a pretty consistent scorer in defence.

Schoenmakers - Due to the inflated rookie prices he could be a good cash cow, especially if he is thrown forward. At least you know he has job security.

Hartung - Could be a smokey to get a handful of games this year. His endurance will help his case.

Bruest, Duryea, Hill all capable of having a breakout season.

Woodward, Hallahan, Langford, Grimely, Lowden and Litherland would all be hopeful of getting some games this year.

Who I don't like;

Jed Anderson - Has lost plenty of weight and unlikely to feature early on. Club will give him time. Maybe a mid season trade down target.

Dayle Garlett - Even with Cyril suspended don't assume he'll be there round one. From all reports Hartung looks more likely and he will have plenty of seasoned VFL players to compete with.

Cyril Rioli - You just can't trust him yo play every game.

Jarryd Roughead - Lost DP status. Better forwards out there.

A lot of supercoach people liking Gunsten as a potential break-out candidate filling buddy's boots. Your guys thoughts?

Can mark and has better set shot accuracy. Will improve his scores dramatically IF he gets most of the goal scoring opportunities that Buddy had. One to watch during the pre-season comp.

Hallahan and Woodward are two I'll be keeping an eye on through the preseason matches. Both relatively cheap and with solid potential, almost certain to debut this year I feel. Langers another to keep an eye on.

O'Brien and Grimley our only 2 forwards that look likely to get a gig, Schoenmakers is rather cheap and if thrown forward could score well.

Stratton could be a good get if he could get a bit more selfish and get more possessions and I'll always go for the Birch! I gotta go with one of Mitch or Hodgey.

Hallahan and Ross are the 0-2 gamers to jump on. Grimley and Lowden next. I would hazard a guess to not start with Ross in your side because he hasn't been upgraded yet so won't play early games until he's upgraded.

Stay away from Schonmakers. Temptation is there, but has never been a big scorer. Also played 4 games so his value won't be low enough to qualify buying him as a cash cow.

Club has reported that Suckling will play match two of the pre season comp, and that Shoenmakers is 6-8 weeks behind him. Based on that he we start through the VFL.

really interested in liam shiels, kid knows how to accumulate when allowed to play his natural game, and can put up big tackle numbers
had a huge year a few years back (dt wise)

will he continue to be a run with player or will he be released?

I doubt it. It's not just the tagging. He hasn't spent more than 45 mins on a player in 2013. We always say his kicking let's him down, but it's interesting to read he is the worst kick rating of the leagues top 300 kickers.

Better options out there.

ok, thanks for the reply

honestly after garletts performance in the intra club, u'd be mad not to have him in ur side, mitch and suckling the only other 2 I'd consider in SC, although suckling is a risk cos traditionally people coming off knees don't rack up big points. He doesn't play in a high impact position, like inside mid, so he should be ok, it's his outside work that scores him points. Hartung, hallahan, grimley, woodward and langford will get a go sometime this year but I wouldn't say it would be early as we want the best possible start to the season. Future mid season downgrades

His kicking is fine when given time and a bit of space. Otherwise he just chucks it on the boot and hopes for the best. Unlike Mitchell and to a lesser degree Sewell doing that doesn't often result in him finding a brown and gold jumper.

I guess my point was, even though he is doing less tagging, it's probably in the teams best interest to refine his role in that department rather than throwing him on the ball full time. We know he can find the ball, but would you honestly want 30 disposals from Shiels, when you could have it from someone like Bruest perhaps?

I'm still not tempted by Garlett but that's just my opinion. I must say after reading the report yesterday I'm a bit hesitant about Suckling. Round 1 is still a fair way away I guess.

Thoughts on Luke Hodge in dream team? What sort of role do you see him playing this year? Through the midfield or playing the general at Half Back?

Does Hodge present better value and consistency than Lumumba or Hanley?

I think Hodge has better value, but is certainly a risk in terms or consistency. What I'm riding my hopes on is the full preseason. The main thing with Hawthorn is the midfield has well and truly moved on from Hodge so he may never get midfield numbers again. That said a fit and firing Hodge will command the ball no matter what position.

Anyone who has Harry O'lookatmynewname should be banned from playing SC/DT. He's useless.

Will likely play where ever he is needed on a per game and even per quarter basis. Probably 60% back, 30% forward and 10% midfield (just pulling numbers out of my proverbial there).

He's tempting but you'd be better served with Mitchell and Suckling. Not sure it'd be wise to have too many players with the same bye week or from the same club.

So general consensus is Shiels will continue his tagging roles? Just interested considering his big 2011 DT wise.

If so appears the likes of Thomas and Grigg are better mid price options.

I felt like Clarko's answer regarding Shiels on Twitter's #askthecoach yesterday left it open as to what his role might be. I think he might start returning to a bit of that 2011 "see ball, get ball" role but he'll likely be the first called upon when we need an opposition mid to be quietened down which could mean some big scores some weeks and then poor scores in others. I like to have a bit more certainty in the scores I expect from players so for that reason I'd avoid him. Might be able to jump on him later if it becomes clear that he's not going to be doing as much run-with stuff and is bringing in big scores.
