We had the press all over us during most of the backend of our season last year and still came within an inch of making a prelim despite two crucial players and a developing young midfielder being out. We were already being hunted - this squad can handle it.

I'd say we were "the hunted" against Port, despite playing over there in Adelaide. I believe the fact we ran it so close, despite them controlling the game (not allowing us to play our way), was a big positive.

Hopefully that's a sign of things to come when other teams stifle us. I'd consider it a real sign of maturity too.

No match sim today mate, so nothing spectacular compared to Thursdays or Mondays.
I am guessing he got some info based on some news from the last Thursday's training (with match sim).

I also noticed this line-

It was Bodie Ryan, I have pics as a proof and I stayed til the end .

Actually Track watchers, what’s the take on Bodie Ryan? Don’t hear much about him.

Was happy when we drafted him, seems like a likely type who could become a good AFL player. He showed a fair bit at Box Hill last year didn’t he? But is he gonna need a solid 3-4 years in the system to develop, especially as he’s unlikely to get a run in the seniors anytime soon given how stacked we are in the back half?

He’s also the type you worry will be a really good player in a few years but is playing somewhere else after leaving due to lack of opportunities.

Appreciate any thoughts.

I don't have anything to add on Bodie specifically but ideally this is the situation you do want. It means your drafting has been really good and at least that way you are likely to get some return on the inital draft pick, even if it is just another crack around the same number. Getting even 3rd or 4th rounders for your depth is so much better than just delisting 3 or more every year.

Horse for cox? Not many new coaches take over a grand final team but they usually go well.

If hawks beat sydney in round 0 I wold say that’s a big plus for the hawks as it’s one of the toughest matches for the whole year. There’s never a sign of swans imploding the next season. Even after shocking grand final losses

Rampe seemed absolutely distraught after the GF last year. You have to wonder whether these performances in September might take a toll on them as a group. Also correct me if i'm wrong but I don't believe there has ever been a successful senior coach in the AFL who played ruck.

I think they won the ‘first’ round of the next season after those years. Remarkable proportion of home games to start the season too.

Pretty clear Butler is one of the best runners at the club. The small forward experiment was a failed exercise. He should be trialled on a wing and exploit his aerobic abilities. This would also bring him into the game more.

He's a good athlete, but he isn't good enough as a footballer. Not a role-player to get the 20-23 selection, not good enough in any particular area to hold down one position

That sounds a bit rough. The coaches have lauded his "creativity and x factor" and Bruest was a fan of his from the time he arrived at the club. He's had a horrid run with injuries since he arrived and would certainly have had a lot more games under his belt by now. He's tough and brings a ferocity to the field. Also note that the club picked him ahead of of Macdonald in the draft. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him – I love the little bit of agro he brings.

I feel there are a couple of the fringe guys that won't be on our list next year. Perhaps Butler is one, Scaife, B Mac and B Ryan. They are likely good enough to get on a list somewhere else but will need luck and injuries to others to get a chance on this current Hawks team IMO.

There will be a number of very unlucky (and deserving) players that won't crack our 22 when all are fit.

It's harsh, but that is what happens when a team is pushing towards the top......good players not getting a game.
