The thing with Clarkson's denial:

It was done after consultation with lawyers obviously. I believe they had gone through the report, and at least identified that what Clarkson was alleged to have done or said was only witnessed by the complainant. Then it becomes he said vs she said behind closed doors and Clarkson can just deny it.

Probably never know the truth

At a guess he thought he’d get them more dedicated to football and working only on that would benefit him as a coach, and the team, leading to more on-field success.

I don’t think Clarko would of thought of it as being mean, he’d have thought he was doing it for “their own good”.
Yeah at best I think his "always looking out for what's best for our players" manifested as a "you'd be better off with this person out of your life, they are a bad influence".

That's just a guess, and if true you might understand it to be a reasonable thing to do.

BUT

The specific details that have been alleged, well clearly they are not on. And only a buffoon wouldn't see the racist aspect to it. As has been said, plenty of dodgy characters at Melbourne Private Schools, but we don't see footy clubs giving them family planning advice.

Eddie Betts' call for a league-wide review is correct both morally and optically.

The AFL needs to rip the horrible band-aid off and get all this sh*t out in the open at the same time. Trying to play whack-a-mole and cover up each individual incident at each club is just going to ensure the controversies keep coming out perpetually each year.

Better to deal with it all at once in order to eventually move on. It is the right and the smart thing to do.
Where are Betts' comments? I haven't seen them..

Andrew Newbold current AFL commissioner is taking a leave of absence from his duties to assist in the independent external investigation.
This is the same Andrew Newbold who was Hawks president from 20212-2016

Has the AFL no shame. Rhetorical question.

3 words. Conflict of Interest.
was later confirmed he will front up for questions not lead the questioning

Isn’t the report still confidential?

I doubt Clarkson would have been issued it today, the 4 investigators will grill him on its contents.

He probably only knows the allegations run in the media

Bailey was banned once he had moved over to Adelaide for the "not-tanking" which went on at Melbourne.
Classic stitch-up, that one. Also remember the sanctions Adelaide got over Tippett? Compare that to draft sanctions Essendon got for doping their players, and Essendon denied everything too. Adelaide voluntarily gave up draft picks and they still got a heftier penalty. I almost feel sorry for Adelaide, they're the red-headed stepchild of the AFL.

His is the 2nd time I've seen this in this thread.

Far be it for me to defend the AFL but they mean assist as in answer questions the investigators have, the same as Clarkson and Fagan, not assist as in BE one of the investigators.

Should we really be treating everything through the eye of race? If the accusations are true I would suggest that the issue isn't only related to First Nation individuals and that clubs are getting involved in family decisions for all young players. We already know they are in charge of housing and managing living circumstances of new recruits - we also know that many partners get involved in their significant others careers and dictate decisions - this is not unique to Indigenous players or even AFL itself. It should not surprise anyone that discussions take place regarding pregnancies of young adults and the consequences it has on the persons career - this includes from family members (especially controlling parents). These are social issues and not unique to the AFL - I think we are missing the big issue by only seeing it as a 'old white men told young indigenous players to leave their partner and not have kids'. The issue of women becoming pregnant while trying to climb the corporate ladder has been going on for a long time and still exists today. Whether bosses are stating it directly or even applying 'pressure' does not really change the issue - it's still there.

This is no shit, weve fostered aboriginal kids and you go to shops with them, go do your own thing and realise someones eyeballing them like they are about to pull of the heist of the decade, you go over, talk to your boy, sideeye the shop assistant and they give you the “oh hes with YOU” look.

Its f-#%^}

It is actually quite refreshing to read the majority of posts on here having a understanding that racism exists and that what happened in the past impacts today.

To be fair, it is ****ed up without the race issue. I would think the matter would be just as serious if we were talking about a few white players. The attitude is an interesting one, however. Port have had more indigenous players go through the club than any other I would imagine and have had to deal with players going off the rails to various degrees. You do wonder how SPP would have been treated by Hawthorn under the old regime. In the end, having a child appears to have been the best thing for his career, and despite some of the fairly significant issues with his extended family, the club seems to have been fairly mature about it and provided support where they could and stayed out when it was none of their business.

I had an indigenous partner for more than 9 years, it often happened to us.
