And that's before you take into account that these three potential claimants are all well known public figure with reputations to protect and a whole bunch of dirty laundry they don't want aired, unless they're as stupid as Ben Roberts-Smith is.

The idea that they're just going to walk out of the ABC office with a sack full of money is a delusion propagated by people who don't like the ABC and/or who do like racists.

The goal of most civil litigation isn't to go to trial though, it's to settle before trial. Ben Roberts-Smith ran into a bunch of people who just said 'nah screw you, we're going to go to court and prove this'. It's possible the ABC just reach a financial settlement to quietly make it all go away.

They offered to delay publishing. For someone as high profile as AFL coaches there is a high likelihood their lawyer would consult with them on the day they advise them of the story. They didn't even respond to accept their publishing delay offer.

Most people would take some kind of action to prevent their life soon being destroyed.

To be fair, I don't think there's anything to be gained by Clarkson, Fagan and Burt having their say in the ABC article. All they'd be doing is denying the claims, there's nothing much more they can add. Their denials would still be overwhelmed by the main purpose of the article which is the accusations.

But yes, they did have a right of reply to the ABC article at least.

Cyril Rioli and several of the aggrieved former Hawthorn players and their families announce their intention to commence action in the Human Rights Commission.

With Port playing Hawthorn tomorrow afternoon (and maybe I'm reading too much into it) I think it adds some context to the unusual decision of both teams to wear their Indigenous jumpers for the game - despite bot h having worn them in home and away rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls round.

For those who have forgotten who Leon Egan is.

Hawthorn’s former Indigenous manager has called on the club to face up to its historical decades-long problem with Aboriginal players and has urged the club to welcome an Indigenous director onto Jeff Kennett’s board.

Leon Egan, a father figure to a long line of Indigenous players during the club’s most recent golden era, has advised club bosses after Cyril Rioli’s recollections about his time at the Hawks that they need to acknowledge Hawthorn’s divisive past in a bid to build a stronger cultural relationship with Indigenous Australians.

Egan played under-19s football in 1988 with the Hawks but said he was later told by a senior Hawthorn recruiter that he would never have made the senior grade at the club because of its decision not to recruit Indigenous players. “The club needs to face up to that,” Egan said.
........

Egan worked for Hawthorn for four years on a temporary basis as the Hawks’ Indigenous liaison officer but, like Rioli and his senior teammate, Shaun Burgoyne, was frustrated and disappointed by the club’s refusal to commit funding beyond his one-day-a-week role.

He quit the club after the 2015 grand final when he was refused a pass to the Hawks’ post-match premiership celebrations in the MCG dressing rooms, which he described as “the final insult for me”.

Egan said he had chosen to speak publicly because he believed that Hawthorn under CEO Reeves, who took over shortly before Rioli’s acrimonious departure, was genuinely trying to make changes at the club, which he said in the past had dealt with Indigenous issues in a “tokenistic” fashion.

So now they have spoken. With passion, clarity but also with restraint.

It really is a powerful letter, clearly worked over and edited over many days. They know it will make them a target from the usual sources and especially on social media where the same old hateful racist stereotyping has already commenced.

These paras perhaps are the most powerful imho:

It's also possible the ABC are emboldened by Ben Roberts-Smith's thorough public humiliation and call the bluff.

So in summary great job AFL but now we're off to get some dollars.
Why do you hate indigenous people so much? And please don't pretend your response to this development is anything different.

Not at all, there is no money in this for them. There is potentially a lot of grief for the AFL and Hawthorn, but no big payday for the complainants. It is clearly about them wanting to be heard. Taking away the dash for cash element, makes it even more powerful.

I know that but the average joe of that leaning will think this
Are you implying a gentleman called "farted" is part of the common soldiery?

The fact it's Cyril Rioli adds so much weight to all this
Hawthorn 4 time premiership legend taking on Hawthorn 4 time premiership legend Alistair Clarkson at the Human Rights Commission for alleged racism is an absolutely disastrous look for the AFL no matter how many stage managed press releases they put out.

A hell of a lot more disastrous for Hawthorn, who knows what they told the AFL. If this was my club I would hand in my membership.

Take a moment to imagine the sort of horrible life and lack of education that leads to someone reading that statement and coming up with that bigoted summary.

The amount of hateful bile that is bottled up in just those few words is pretty frightful. if you think about it. And it's not the first comment of its sort we will see in this thread either.

And that's just us with no skin in the game having to read it in the backwater of a footy forum. Multiply that sort of ignorant bigotry by about 10,000 and I reckon you might be somewhere close to what those families are copping right now on social media and what a lot of Indigenous families have to cope with every day of their lives.

It's sickening.
