Trotty he probably is suffering more than you think. Bad year for Spudda all round with the Tiges only winning one as well, let alone how bad the Saints have traveled in the last two months. Big ticker though and no doubt a few more Snakes and Chico's and he'll be OK. Good to see you have finally dragged yourself out of the 'Top'.:D

You got it wrong mate currently serving a self imposed ban from the top pub. Looking forward to Sundays get together are all you fella's going along?

Here's a story I wrote for yesterday's Free Press you boys might be interested in.

Can the RDFL expand?

by Matt Nicholls

MEMO: To all football fans and clubs in the district.
Imagine this. A super country football league with two divisions involving teams from this area.
Take a minute to ponder rivalry matches of yesteryear such as Wallan versus Kilmore, Gisborne against Riddell or a more modern Sunbury Kangaroos v Sunbury Lions.
If you asked me whether it was possible at the start of this season, I probably would have said no.
Now, I’m not so sure.
It has been 10 years since the Riddell District Football League became a one-division competition, and there is serious thought being put towards recreating the super league it once was.
At this end of the geographical area, the local football supporters are licking their lips at the idea.
Similarly at the other end, towards Melton, Sunbury and Gisborne, the fans are desperate to resume old RDFL rivalries.
If you take various sides from the surrounding district - some current, some former, and some new – and put together a two division football league, it has the potential to become one of the strongest competitions in Victoria.
Powerhouse clubs such as Sunbury Lions, Gisborne, Melton South, Melton, Darley and Kyneton – all from superior competitions should be welcomed back with open arms.
Invite Wallan and Trentham back to the fore, get Bacchus Marsh aboard. That is already nine new clubs.
Take the current 10 sides and all of a sudden you have a lot of potential to build a powerful competition.
It is hard to believe that it was just over a decade ago when many of these “new” sides were actually competing in the RDFL.
The area that involves these 19 clubs includes some of the biggest growing populations in Victoria.
It means that there is a guarantee of junior footballers, therefore creating a strong flow on to the seniors.
SALARY CAP
Without a doubt there would be some clubs that would struggle with the two divisions.
Rockbank, Trentham, Macedon, Melton Central and Lancefield would most likely struggle to stay afloat with potentially stronger neighbouring rivals.
Clubs such as Gisborne, Sunbury Lions and Melton South would obviously be very hard to beat.
Financially able to pay for classier players, it would mean a salary cap system would have to be introduced across the board to prevent clubs from “buying premierships”.
Unlike the AFL’s system to limit a club’s spending, there is a way to prevent clubs from importing talent – therefore encouraging sides to promote their junior programs.
To borrow a system implemented by the Central Murray Football League, it is possible to implement a strategy to even up the competition.
The league could make each club fill their side with a points tally totalling 40.
Using this simple points ranking system, clubs must not exceed the cap, or they will lose their four points and be fined $500.
This is how each player could be ranked:

This system is simply designed to promote the blooding of locally produced players and forcing clubs to focus time and money into their junior programs.
This will hopefully result in more of our locally produced youngsters playing in the TAC Cup and getting drafted to the AFL.
Obviously it still allows club’s to spend as much money as they like, but it doesn’t make it easy or viable for sides to “poach” players from neighbouring clubs in the competition.
There are some other points that need to be raised from this system though.
  • Playing coaches are rated on the league from which they are recruited.
  • An RDFL player wishing to return to a new RDFL club from another league is a 5 point player, less one point for each season spent in the other league after leaving the RDFL.
  • Clubs will initially rate their players and forward these to the league where each player’s rating will be verified before being circulated to all clubs.
  • Players returning to their original RDFL club after at least one season away return at their rating prior to departure.
  • There is no points cap in the Under 18s and reserves competition.
If the RDFL became a two division competition, this is how the divisions may pan out.

If this were to eventuate, the longest away trip for any club would be the Bacchus Marsh to Kilmore fixture, a journey that would take approximately 60 minutes.
If you look at other football leagues, particularly the Heathcote District Football League, there are a number of 80-100 minute trips for participating clubs.

LONG SHOT

The hardest challenge to get this idea off the ground is likely to be persuading clubs such as Sunbury Lions and Gisborne to join what is deemed to be a “weaker” competition. But it is possible.
There is also the issue of whether the current clubs would welcome back some sides into the RDFL.
Many clubs were annoyed when clubs such as Wallan and Gisborne left the competition when it was virtually on its knees and dying.
While this “super league” plan is a long shot, I recommend all clubs to consider the prospect.
Football etiquette prevents the RDFL from approaching clubs to join the competition, if clubs want to join they need to take the initiative and approach the RDFL.
Six years ago the Riddell District Football League was shot to pieces and many feared it would not survive.
Thanks to the excellent work of former general manager Neill Sharpe, the current RDFL board and many others, the league is now starting to thrive.
However, towns such as Romsey, Woodend and Kilmore are continually growing, and it’s not unforeseeable that they will soon outgrow the current competition.
Measures need to be put in place to protect the RDFL and ensure that it grows with the community amongst and surrounding it.

You've got too much time on your hands you w***er. The only person this might be interesting to is yourself.

Ease up spider, the kid is a cadet at a local newpaper and does a bloody good job on all sports IMO.

If it doesn't interest ya just scroll thru it but give the lad a go

Matt, I would think you would have no chance in hell of the Bendigo League letting go of Gisborne and Kyneton, and if they did, Kyneton would be lucky to be in Div 1, as they are pretty ordinary these days.

I do not know if spider knows their is a bit of talk going around in the Northern F.L. about looking at 3rd DIV in that league that could include sides in the Essendon F.L. I think their is even talk of merging the Northern & Essendon F.L to make one league.Matt might have heard something of the same in what he has wrote. This might not interest people now but it just might in the future.:thumbsu:

Matt could not be that bad if he had a run with Lancefield could he?
And to you RWB if you are wondering how know about the Northern F.L.
My good friend Dirty Rat keeps me informed of whats going on at my old club down their:D

Is their any truth in the rumour,a new club heading to either the HDFL or LVDFL next year.Any body know any more

According to everyone I know it will be Richmond. (Why are people so unkind?).

Doona, I heard the Flat thing mooted a couple a months ago but most seemed to think that that the Flat had plenty of money and just needed a couple of changes off the field as well as on.

Flat would be very interesting!!!

Strathfieldsaye, are looking at being a stand alone club and will probably either join in the hdfl or lvfl. There is an article in todays addy, calling for expressions of interest to be on the committe. Couldn't find the article on the net though!

Cheers,

Yours in Froffies!

HDFL DUNNY TALK ROUND 15

White Hills face the daunting task of taking on ladder leaders Colbo. The hillies do have the firepower and will fancy themselves at home but will need to be at their very best. 2 players that will need to have impacts are Jarrod 'pom' Brittain and Dave 'will need to do everything' Wright. The hoppers have great depth throughout the side with recent inclusions Damian Ellis, Ellis who the f*ck is Ellis and Camerons 'a good' Ladd. Should be a close game but like a pint of guiness, the cream always rises to the top, and that's Colbo.:D

Down at Broadford the Roos have a chance to further tighten the grip on fifth spot as they take on LBU. Sam 'mullet head' Newth broke the Saints achy breaky heart last week and with Charlie 'wouldnt it be nice if the world was cadbury' Smythe will need to have big games if the Cats are going to make it back to back wins. Edward 'my dad used to play for Collingwood' Neilson and the continued good form of Joeys, Matt 'cooney' Coomans and Sean 'dug' Duggan will be enough to see the Roos home.:thumbsu:

At trickeys diesel oval the Hawks take on North in a game that should be played with a lot of passion despite both sides not being able to make finals. The doggies haven't been that bad this year and this will be a good chance for Rob 'roy' Morris to go to the Nathan Barber's for a trim. The Hawks need to continue to play the kids and take risks and not worry too much about the scoreboard. I didnt think they made them that old but Mark 'crusty' Billings has had a hard job, and i would like to see him have a win.

The clash between the Bloods and the Mountain men is match of the round. Ryan 'willie mayes' Hayes coming of the break fresh from kicking 26 straight will cause headaches for mounts with his height. Greg 'redesdale' Chambers will need to fly the kite down back for the blues along with Chris Black. Coach Cam 'mathew priddis' Carter will need to find a way to stop the supply from the bloods engine room or Hayes, Rout and Lececk will kick a winning score.

Tip of the week: People dont fail, they give up.

I do not know what other peoples thoughts are on Strathfieldsaye looking at entering a team in either the HDFL or LDVFL in the coming years.I think the League should act now and try to encourage Strath to head to the HDFL The league must try in everyway to keep this league at a high standard. This would be one way i think.

Ah, sorry thought this link was for the HDFL. Must be mistaken.

Hey Andy, how do you rate Sawyer as a coach? Speaking to a few hills boys and they like him as a coach and hope he stays there but he speeches have more swearing in them than a building site!

Does anyone know who up dates the HDFL site? Troy does a great job and was just having a look at the review and preview and it's still at round 8. Is it still Trevor Arnel who updates it? They should get who ever does Colbo's site to update it.

and be honest Andy with your reply :thumbsu:

the swearing has probably been an issue, but the hills are more than competitive, which after the first couple of rounds didnt look like a formality.
with a good core of players, they can and should improve.
