Yes, I get the impression News Corp checked to see who would be presenting - or knew already - and then went chasing Hird looking for a story. According the article in the Age Hird hasn't even been asked yet, to his knowledge. The AFL say they have written to him, but as he's in Europe, I guess he hasn't got the mail.

Google him, legend of baseball, caught betting on games, despite his record he has never been let in to the hall of fame of allowed any official involvement.
Worth noting also that Hird has been done for bringing the game into disrepute twice. The only person with that 'honor'.
I think its fair to say when you've become depressed to the point of being suicidal you've done your penance and to offer a gesture of acceptance back into what was his world for most of his adult life is a nice act of compassion.
Hird was close to my favourite player for many years and nothing can take away how great he was as a footballer.

Really, the man has given us so many lols over the journey and for that I think he should be applauded.
