Hird To Present Norm Smith Medal at 2017 Grand Final

Hird's actually in an invidious position here (of his own doing). As a sequence, he's next in line to present the norm smith. We can all agree that this is not his fault.
The thing is if he declines the offer it will be seen as an admission of guilt, something he's steadfastly refused to entertain during this ridiculously lengthy saga.
It is lose lose for jimmy either way
What? Or he simply doesn't want to be out in the public eye infront of 100,000 fans and millions on tv. I don't think any would think anything of him declining

"And now to present the Norm Smith medal, former Norm Smith medalist, AFL Hall of Famer, Brownlow winner and former Essendon premiership captain, James Hird!"

"BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Who really wants to see that? Not me. Not the AFL. Surely not Essendon fans. Nobody wins and it just delays the organic 'forgetting' that this game is so good at (i.e Matthews, Carey). A moment like that could set back the opportunity for genuine reintegration into the game a decade or more. With those optics, it'd be like inviting Meatloaf back to do the half time entertainment. A very hard sell.

That was a long time ago now. I'm sure Hird has learned from his mistakes and has grown as a human being. It would be so very brave of him to accept this offer and put himself back into the public on such a big stage, and only troglodytes with black hearts would stoop so low as to boo him for it. Could also send an empowering message for those suffering from mental health issues that recovery is possible.

It would be an honour for any player to receive an award from one of the AFL's greatest ever players.
I doubt if he's learned from it considering he doesn't think he's done anything wrong , delusional. .

It's a good troll for some Essendon supporters. None of them really think it will happen, and few think it should.

The ones who actually think it is a good idea aren't going to change their mind so arguing is a waste of time.

The ones who are trolling get a kick out of the reactions.

Hird was a competitive animal as a player but is also a really good person off the field. imo he had no intentions to inject players with banned substances to get an advantage he like the rest of the club were blinded by Danks dirty dealings imo.

I think "the financials" are a couple of words that haven't gotten enough public attention.

Hird is a disgrace, as are Essendon. Subjecting their list to experimental PEDs is disgusting and unforgivable, Hird was banned by the AFL itself for his actions and omissions, for him to award the second most prestigious award in the game on grand final day is a travesty.

And fwiw the mental health argument can only excuse so much. Too many people on the lower rungs of society and in Australias prisons cope with serious mental illness on a day-to-day basis - the option to plead mental illness as an excuse for missing work or in court rarely successful for such people. Hird can play that card and get applauded and a free pass for 'bravery', it is disgraceful and he is the architect of his own misfortune and should face the consequences like everyone else

I can understand you are anxious .. could be a year Melb might win their first Normie

"Are you saying Boo or Boo-urns?"

The posting on this thread is ******* disgusting. Here is a guy who has genuinely ****** up, his whole reputation is destroyed and he is now given the opportunity to put it behind him and hopefully end a nasty chapter on a positive note.

You can't believe the dickheads laying the boots in.

You people are ******* sick.

Nup. He destroyed his own reputation. He doesn't deserve the opportunity being gifted.

He should have just been quietly skipped. Buggins Turn. It should have just been announced that Shaun Hart would present the medal. Nobody would have noticed unless they bothered to look up the list of previous winners and notice Hird had been skipped.

Clayton oliver likes this thread

That AFL Senior Manager who is having the affair likes this thread even more.

Almost like the AFL have thought what story will create a distraction from their internal issues right now.

Gil has given Callum Twomey a call and asked him to call Hird and see if he is intrested in doing the NS presentation. And get some quotes for a AFL story.

Bingo Gil and the AFL.

This is bizarre.
There are plenty of other controversial players who have just moved on into the sunset and have separated themselves from the AFL. I don't understand why Hird can't do the same, why does he have such a problem accepting that he shouldn't be involved with the AFL anymore?
With his mental health problems, I don't understand why anyone including himself, his family or the AFL would think this would be a good idea. In saying that, if he accepts all power to him and he is going to cop a lot and he is aware of that. So can hardly play the mental health card if so.
What's sad is that had the AFL just skipped him most people would be none the wiser. But they've now tarnished this award whether he accepts it or not. Bizarre decision by the AFL.

James is a brave man. If he accepts this offer he will be doing so with the knowledge that a lot of football supporters are drunken, lowlife buffoons who would boo a man who's been through so much pain and hardship. He will still get up on that stage and fulfill his duties regardless of the haters.

If he's boo'd it will be more of a reflection on those in attendance than Hird himself. To forgive is divine.

This is satire at a very high level, kudos.

He was given ample opportunity to accept responsibility and put it behind him. Instead he chose to go to court. Twice.
