Resource History of AFL Grand Final Artwork

There are a few more things that I would add to the your Grand Final Artwork pages. The uniforms that are worn by the clubs are part of the art of the Grand Final. Which team wears the white shorts on the day? The television broadcasters have included the Pay TV broadcaster for the last year or so with the Pay TV provider broadcasting the Grand Final live as well.

Also, one of the greatest parts of the artwork of Grand Final Day is the Herald Sun Premiership Poster. The posters have been part of Grand Final since 1954.

Thats a nice idea, but its really starting to stray too far from what this project is about. This isn't about Grand Finals per se, but more all about on-field presentation. As mentioned earlier, eventually I'd like to expand this to cover the entire history of on-field presentation, bit thats a mammoth task, so I started just with Grand Finals as it is arguably the most interesting with team logos and special one-off designs over the years.

Also just as an aside, the Grand Final has never been shown live on Foxtel. Its the only game of the season they don't have live rights to. The last few seasons they have been doing pre-match, half time and post-match analysis on Fox, but they have never had rights to show the match itself live.

You could also look at the shade of green the grass ends up like.
This year it comes up like an argyle type diamond pattern.

That was something I had considered, but youtube videos of old Grand Finals make it a bit hard to see how they look sometimes.

I also toyed with the idea of doing a top-down perspective of the grandstands around the ground, but thats really just window dressing that is very time consuming and not super important to what its all about.

With respect I don't really like the idea of you hijacking Crow's thread with your own take on his existing work.

Was just thinking on the idea, however you are the one that is undertaking the project and will be the one investing their time into it so it is totally up to you. Just to see a page with all this information presented would be amazing.

A couple of things to consider with this project; Look at the innovations in the style used in these graphics. Have they used the style like they have in Rugby League where the words look like they are standing up. When where items added at the last minute, like with the 1993 Grand Final which added the Sydney 2000 logo to the field on the Friday before the Grand Final as the announcement by the IOC that Sydney would host the Olympics in 2000 was made overnight that day.

Also Fox Footy will be broadcasting the Grand Final tomorrow (https://au.tv.yahoo.com/tv-guide/channel/429292/) as they have been doing for all of the games broadcasted by 7 this year.

I have made no attempt to seize control of Crow's thread. By showing him what idea's could be used I was hoping to improve what was created. However he has said that this is only the start of a larger project on onfield graphics in the AFL not just on the Grand Final. These threads are made so people can comment.

Nope. That "Grand Final Day on Fox" is just what they are calling the program featuring their panelists talking about the game. During the match itself, it will just be something along the lines of a blank screen with a message saying "come back after the game for the best post match analysis" or something. I can 100% guarantee you that Fox DO NOT have the rights to show the Grand Final live, and never have. They did have ads saying "every final in September live and ad free", but note that the GF is in October...

For a laugh, FOX FOOTY should show the 1997 Qualifying Final - Western Bulldogs v Sydney from the MCG.

Would probably fool a few drunk dudes by then.

They played 2005 during 2006 and pissed off a lot of people

all AFL will be on FOXTEL in a few years

All AFL will be on THE OFFICIAL AFL APP FOR LIVE AFL GAMES BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE AFL in a few years.

(AFL.)

Then they can get rid of those pesky broadcast partners and have wall-to-wall AFL branding!

You forgot to mention that we're talking about AFL..

That 1999 logo is a real shocker. Looks like Word 97 WordArt gone mad. 2000 not much better.

agree, 99 just looks plain lazy... could have done something a bit more creative for 2000, bit of a lame effort there

i still like all the early 90s logos (1990-95), integrating the AFL logo of the time into the world "grAnd".

i came up with something similar, if we were to bring that style of logo back

Alright, its that time of year again! Last year I started a project to chronicle the on-field artwork for every Grand Final. It was a bigger project than I expected, so I only got as far back as the beginning of the AFL era.

This year, I went further back - as far as 1976, when the VFL logo first appeared on the ground. The artwork of the VFL era was much more simple, but still serves as an interesting account of how these things developed. Special thanks to Mero once again for helping out with some of the more obscure logos.

Always surprised me Fox didn't make a big play for the GF

But that's for another thread
Just saw this post. Won't happen as that would be currently illegal under anti-siphoning law and that Seven or whoever holds rights can maintain exclusivity. AFL as a whole competition is listed and there's pretty much no chance they'd want to lose the biggest football event of the year.

I can't find the original post, but I'm sure I meant in the negotiations for the last contract

Yeah, but Seven, as FTA owner of rights, pretty much onsells what they want to Fox, and I doubt they'd split the audience for one of the biggest TV events each year. Would take a lot of cash to offset what Seven would lose for an ad-free GF.
