Hobart stadium business case

It is a simple case of the AFL putting in their demands, saying if Tasmania want an AFL team they need a stadium with a roof, not unreasonable given there are a lot of games in Tasmania that are rain affected and rain makes some pretty crappy AFL games, so it is up to Tasmania as to whether they agree or not. No one is forcing them, the AFL have laid out the conditions, and they have to decide if it is worth it or not. They can't have a team in a stadium with no roof as that just makes the AFL product worse.

Hobart gets less rain than any capital city other than Adelaide and half that of Sydney.

Along with the rain though is freezing temperatures and often high winds. The most miserable games from a weather perspective I have ever seen are usually in Tasmania.

Huh ?.

The Roos and Hawks games I watched last year in Tassie were completely fine.

Think you are talking out your ass on this one.

Where did I say that all Tasmanian games have shit weather?

So the rationale is that Tassie needs a stadium with a roof because sometimes you get bad weather, but if Tassie doesn’t build a stadium with a roof then they don’t get a team and the Hawks and Roos can keep playing in Tassie stadiums without roofs (sometimes in bad weather) ?.

Was never really a fan of North and Hawthorn playing in Tasmania either.

Yes, while pissing away millions on GWS/GCS? Population doesn't necessarily translate into popularity you know. I guess it never rains in almighty Sydney, am I right?

Oh dear, apparently AFL games can't be played in the cold. But EPL and Gridiron can??? Honestly WTF, how soft is this country becoming?

Different games. Soccer looks pretty similar in the wet or dry. When it is wet in the AFL it goes from an amazing looking game to what looks like an under 6 soccer match where everyone chases the ball and the only tactic is kicking it forward.

Mainly because the ball is synthetic and dimpled and doesn't get waterlogged, how sad that teams need to adjust their tactics for the weather/wind/umpiring/opposition/state of the playing surface etc ; sounds like a lot of hard work. You seem to only see this issue from the point of esthetics so if this stadium needs a roof, then they all should be retrofitted by your standards.

Footy in the wet sucks at the ground but also on TV.

If you're going to the expense of building a stadium, why not put a roof on it?

better to just do it now than get 10 years down the track and say they should have done it. Because that's 100% what will happen.

Why not? It's unnecessary, costly for a state that's heavily in debt and has the lowest GDP in the nation by far. All of this blow out will have to be paid for by the state or private enterprise, and they will want a nice return on any investment. Not sure why it will 100% happen later anyway. I think, from memory, it needs to be incorporated from the outset or it just becomes impractical. 1 billion for a sports stadium in Hobart while in the north the largest hospital up here has no air conditioning for mostly elderly patients. There's much more important things need investment in here beyond a roof for a sports stadium.

Tasmania has had money before this yeah? It’s naive to think that money not spent on the stadium will be spent on hospitals. The same funding model that let key areas like health get chronically underfunded will continue stadium or not.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's necessary, but it would be dumb not to do it when you are building a brand-new stadium. New covered stadium in Hobart all of a sudden looks a lot more appealing to test cricket also.

If they dont i guarantee you in 10 years they will say we should have. And what costs extra now will be threefold more expensive later.

If it was going to be open air i wouldn't even bother building a new stadium - just spend money on upgrading Bellerive.
And if the hospitals are that bad, spent the rest on those.

As opposed to every other AFL level football stadium in WA, SA, NT, Vic (with the exception of Marvel), NSW, ACT and QLD ?!.

If AFL HQ don’t allow a Tassie team in because of the lack of a roofed stadium then they are a bigger mob of carnts than they are currently (which is almost impossible).

Not sure what your guarantee is based on, the vibe I guess and as for 'looks appealing for test cricket' is not a guaranty of extra games, just more vibes. And no from what I have been told (as I have never been there, and I guess neither have you) upgrading Bellerive is like resurrecting an old VFL suburban ground, ie putting lipstick on a pig.

I think the side needs a new build, and while I understand Jackie Lambies call to play out of York Park, and though the benefits to the North will be minimal (though still having to fork out for the costs) being majoritively a Hobart based squad makes a lot of sense.

The roof idea is a whole lot of nonsense, extra unnecessary costs and probably counterproductive, as most finals will be played out in the wild, scary weather of Victoria; as usual. As for the multipurpose stadium rubbish for major concerts and other events, well remember the old saying. A camel is a horse designed by a committee.
